Amazon Kindle Fire HDX Begins To Ship

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX Begins To ShipSometime near the end of last month, we saw the introduction of a spanking new Kindle Fire HDX tablet, but back then, it was just announced, without the device being made immediately available to those who want one. Amazon.com knows that folks have been patient with them, and has today announced that the spanking new 7” Kindle Fire HDX has started to ship. Well, is there anything that you need to know about the Kindle Fire HDX before you arrive at a purchase decision? Let us help you by going through the hardware specifications.

For starters, the Kindle Fire HDX will merge groundbreaking hardware, the latest version of Fire OS 3.0 “Mojito,” as well as a bunch of exclusive new features and services such as X-Ray for Music, Prime Instant Video downloads, and the revolutionary new Mayday button. Apart from that, we do know that the Kindle Fire HDX will be powered by a quad-core 2.2GHz processor and additional memory to boot. The Mayday button is something new that you can take advantage of – pressing it will see an Amazon expert appear on your Fire HDX display, where you will be guided through any feature via drawing on your screen, or even walking you through how to perform something by yourself – for free, and it is also available round the clock throughout the year, now how about that?

Fly Or Die: Amazon Kindle Fire HDX

Screen Shot 2013-10-08 at 10.16.14 AM

Amazon has been churning out LCD-based Kindle tablets for the past two years, and there’s no question that the company has improved from the original, BlackBerry PlayBook-style Kindle Fire. But with the Fire HDX, is there enough of an improvement to upgrade from the Kindle Fire HD?

That’s the question John Biggs and I investigate on this latest episode of Fly Or Die.

John, as a real-life Kindle fanboy, feels that this is the very best Fire that Amazon has to offer. The specs have been bumped considerably, with a 1920×1200 display at 323ppi, a 2.2-GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and up to 64GB of internal storage under the hood.

Biggs also reported in his review that battery life is improved, while camera functionality has some strange issues.

But for me, I’m not sure that a slightly better display is worth the upgrade, considering that the Fire HD already has a hi-res screen. The form factor is nice, as the new model is thinner and lighter, but again the improvements aren’t convincing enough for me to advocate throwing down $300 on a tablet limited to Amazon content if you already have one.

Of course, Amazon is a strong competitor in the tablet market against Apple, and the HDX will most certainly sell well. Plus, at the end of the day, the decision is yours.

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7″ Review

You could call Amazon’s Kindle Fire the anti-Nexus. While the new Kindle Fire HDX may be based on Android, it’s resolutely designed to cater for avid customers of Amazon’s store, tailoring just about every part of the experience to streamline your shopping (whether digital or physical). Amazon may be selling the Kindle Fire HDX 7″ […]

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX review (7-inch)

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX review (7-inch)

There was surprisingly little fanfare surrounding the announcement of Amazon’s latest Fire tablets. Where last year’s unveiling involved renting out an airplane hangar at the Santa Monica airport, the new tablet trio was quietly shown off to a small gathering of journalists at the company’s Seattle headquarters. Asked why Amazon opted for something so low-key, a rep answered, that CEO Jeff Bezos “just likes to mix things up.” (Those wacky billionaires.) Indeed, there was little rhyme or reason to the scaling back. After all, the new HDX tablets, available in 7- and 9-inch sizes, bring a number of key upgrades to the Kindle Fire line on both the hardware and software fronts.

And that’s a good thing: between the Nexus 7, iPad mini and a seemingly endless parade of pocket-sized tablets, Amazon has more competition to contend with than ever. But while the company’s acknowledged that its tablets are basically just content delivery vessels, it’s chosen to compete on specs as well, with a 1,920 x 1,200, 323-ppi display, a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and new software features that include baked-in video customer support and a “Second Screen” TV feature. So is that enough to keep the Kindle Fire competitive?%Gallery-slideshow99754%

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX ushers in third generation era of tablets

kindle-fire-hdxWhen it comes to the world of tablets, most folks are torn between the iOS-powered models from Apple, namely the iPad and iPad mini, as well as the Android-powered tablets which seem to come in all sorts of screen sizes from a slew of manufacturers. However, the folks over at Amazon are not blind to the situation, and to see them make an announcement concerning the third generation of tablets from their Kindle shows that they have been doing something right all this while – and the new Kindle Fire HDX looks set to continue in the footsteps of its predecessor.

For starters, the new Kindle Fire HDX from Amazon will arrive in two display sizes – 7” or 8.9”, and not only that, you will find the relevant amount of processing muscle available under the hood, namely a quad-core 2.2GHz processor that has triple the processing power of its predecessor, double the amount of memory, up to 11 hours of battery life for mixed use, as well as dual stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus audio that will certainly keep your ears more than happy.

As mentioned earlier, there will be two models available – the 7” Kindle Fire HDX will start from $229 and you can already place a pre-order for it, with shipping set to commence this coming October 18th. There is also a 4G version in the pipeline, and that particular model will obviously cost you more at $329 a pop.

As for the larger sized model, the 8.9” Kindle Fire HDX will surely be a sight for sore eyes thanks to its more generous display size, where it will retail for $379 for the vanilla version, with shipping set to happen this November 7th, which is more than a month away. Not only that, Amazon will also roll out a 4G version albeit at $479 a pop, and shipping for that model will cost happen later this December 10th. All in all, still in time for Christmas!
