Vivo’s Upcoming Flagship Smartphone Could Carry Nikon SLR Chip

Vivo’s Upcoming Flagship Smartphone Could Carry Nikon SLR ChipIt does seem as though smartphone manufacturers from China are starting to come into their own, as we have witnessed with this morning’s Oppo N1 launch in Beijing, China. Gotta love that camera module on the Oppo N1 for sure, but then again, another Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Vivo, looks set to make a splash in the high end market with one rather interesting hardware specification – a rumored 1/1.7-inch, 20.2MP CMOS sensor that will feature an aperture of f/2.0, alongside a Nikon EXPEED chip.

Any shutterbug worth his or her salt would be able to figure out that this is one impressive sounding hardware specification, at least when it comes to “paper qualifications” for a smartphone with a camera built right inside of it. Other than that, there were no other whispers of what Vivo could throw into their flagship device, although we do look forward to leaks that should arrive in the future. What do you think that Vivo should include into what is most probably their future flagship device? A Nikon SLR chip within would certainly go some way in making the Vivo smartphone worth more than just a second look, but to fall under one’s serious consideration for a fantastic mobile photo taking experience.

Alleged Android 4.4 KitKat Images Suggest a Flattened, 2D Design

Some images of what’s alleged to be Android 4.4 appeared over the weekend, with screen captures of a phone supposedly running the new KitKat release giving us a look at what may be Google’s ever-so-slightly redesigned new mobile OS.

Pantech Vega Iron To Get Android 4.4 KitKat

Pantech Vega Iron To Get Android 4.4 KitKat The Pantech Vega Iron was first unveiled earlier in April, but it seemed to remain within the realm of South Korea, its home market. Still, things do seem to shape up that the Pantech Vega Iron might end up as one of the first smartphones which will be on the receiving end of the new Android 4.4 KitKat operating system update. Pantech also confirmed this information over Twitter in native Korean of course, that the Vega Iron would be able to receive this update in due time. Unfortunately, we do not have an exact date as to when one is able to expect it.

Needless to say, Pantech would not be the only manufacturer to ensure that their handset gets to enjoy this particular update, as there are other manufacturers around such as Samsung, Sony, LG and HTC who will eventually update some of their devices to Android 4.4 KitKat in due time, too. When the Pantech Vega Iron was revealed to the world earlier this year, it came with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean right out of the box, where it was accompanied by a 5” (1280 x 720 pixels) display with a 2.4mm-thin bezel on the left and right hand sides. Other hardware specifications include LTE connectivity, a 13MP shooter at the back, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, and a 2,150 mAh battery.

Larry Page Gets A Literal Android KitKat

Larry Page Gets A Literal Android KitKatAndroid 4.4 KitKat marks a milestone for Google as they have named their mobile operating system after a branded chocolate – although something healthier like Android 4.4 Kiwi might sit better with all the fitness buffs out there. Kiwi sound good though, it is full of nutrition, not to mention boasting a green colored flesh to correspond with Android’s official shade. Having said that, Google CEO Larry Page has already posted up via his Google Plus account of his KitKat adventure.

KitKat will not only feature Android-branded packaging as well as run a contest where they would hand out new Nexus 7 tablets to the respective winners, but have also come up with specially made KitKat chocolate bars which were specially designed to resemble that of the Android bugdroid. Being CEO, Larry Page has received his own KitKat bugdroid already, and chances are he would have eaten it already. While it breaks all too easily, hopefully Android 4.4 KitKat will not live up to the parody ad that Nokia came up with. Normally, whenever a company or organization is threatened or backed into a corner, they would be at their fiercest in order to fight back for survival’s sake. Could newly acquired Nokia be headed in that particular direction?

Nexus 5 could be the LG D820, to sport Snapdragon 800, 5-inch display

As the dust of IFA slowly settles down, we turn our attention to something that passed us by rather quickly: the appearance of what is allegedly the Nexus 5. Keen observers noted in Google‘s Android 4.4 KitKat video what seems to be a Nexus smartphone featuring a rear design that has not yet been seen. […]

TC Droidcast Episode 5: Samsung Galaxy Gear And Note 3, Sony’s Crazy Cameras And The KitKat Crunch Heard Round The World

    droidcast5

We’re sure glad the weekly TechCrunch Droidcast falls on a Wednesday, because this was a big one for Android. Samsung and Sony both had events at IFA in Berlin and revealed new hardware, and we’re joined by none other than 9to5Google‘s Seth Weintraub as a special guest this week to break it all down.

The Galaxy Gear smartwatch is probably the most buzzed about news of the week, and the announcement held a few surprises despite early leaks. Samsung also revealed the Galaxy Note 3, with a bigger screen yet smaller footprint, and Sony showed off camera lens accessories for smartphones that make your pocket camera a pro shooter, along with a brand new flagship smartphone.

We also get into Google’s captivating decision to partner with Kit Kat (yes, the candy brand) to secure licensing rights for the name of the next version of Android (4.4), and everyone comes away hungrier than they were before.

We invite you to enjoy weekly Android podcasts every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Eastern and 2:30 p.m. Pacific, in addition to our weekly Gadgets podcast at 3 p.m. Eastern and noon Pacific on Fridays. Subscribe to the TechCrunch Droidcast in iTunes, too, if that’s your fancy.

Google Android 4.4 KitKat Ad Jests At Apple’s Jony Ive

It was just yesterday that Google announced their future Android 4.4 version would be known as KitKat, and in a day and age where companies do not mind poking some fun at one another in their ads without being too straightforward, watch the YouTube video above and you would know that the ad parodies not only the look, but also the feel of Apple’s product design videos which feature Senior Vice President of design Jonathan Ive.

Not only that, KitKat’s “chief breaks officer” Chris Catlin, has gone out of the way to speak using a similar lilting English accent that Ive uses as he describes “confectionery perfectionery.” Catlin mentioned, “Every corner, every edge, every finger of every bar has been carefully considered and crafted to create a beautifully immersive and multisensory experience. And it really does taste as good as it looks.”

In the video, Catlin also went on to further describe the chocolate bar as featuring an “adjustable orientation,” and also global coverage so that users with devices running on Android 4.4 KitKat are able to take it literally anywhere. KitKat marks the first time that Google has gone ahead with a branded name for their mobile operating system, but will it be the last? Only time will tell.
