Lenovo ThinkPad S3 and S5 teased, show off aluminum ‘floating design’

Lenovo ThinkPad S3 and S5 tease new aluminum design, to feature

Starting to get bored of the ThinkPad’s classic look but not keen on the Edge series? Then we have good news for you! Earlier today we received a couple of photos that show off two upcoming Lenovo Ultrabooks: the 13-inch ThinkPad S3 (codename “Labatt”) and the 15-inch ThinkPad S5 (“Guinness”). As you can see above and after the break, both aluminum laptops feature a new “floating design” that might have taken a page out of Samsung and Vizio’s book: shaving off the front outer edges of the bottom side to create that slim and floating illusion. Also, these will apparently come with either a black or silver lid.

Some folks on Sina Weibo have received other teaser photos of the ThinkPad S5, with one confirming the presence of JBL stereo speakers. The funny thing is Chinese website Yesky reported on a charity auction that actually sold limited editions of the S3 and S5 earlier this month, but those unannounced Ultrabooks went under everyone else’s radar. If you’re curious, Yesky speculates that a launch is due in China at the end of this month, but you’ll have to stay tuned for the prices and specs.

ASUS Zenbook Infinity teased: 15.5mm thick with lashings of Gorilla Glass 3

ASUS will bring its new ultrabook, the Zenbook Infinity, to Computex 2013 the company has confirmed, a slimmer, lighter, and – so the company promises – more attractive update to its previous Zenbook models. The new Infinity version will trim its bulk by 14-percent, with thickness down to just 15.5mm, fusing Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the lid to the aluminum frame.

That Gorilla Glass 3 also features around the keyboard, lending its extra toughness to the lower half of the notebook. Corning and ASUS claim it makes for an ultrabook which is near impossible to scuff or scratch, with the third-gen glass three times as scratch-resistant as its predecessor.

Unsurprisingly, ASUS isn’t giving out much in the way of hardware specifications beyond the design hints. The notebook is more than likely to use Intel’s next-gen Core processors, based on Haswell architecture, just as we’re expecting to see crop up in new MacBook models from Apple tipped for a WWDC 2013 reveal.

One other possibility, however, is that ASUS could offer a high-resolution display, at least as an option. The company has already begun to quietly list a Retina-besting notebook in Europe, running at a hefty 2880 x 1620, though it’s unclear if it has access to a similar-resolution screen suited to the more-ultrabook-likely 13.3-inch form-factor.

Such a high-resolution screen would demand a high-performance graphics chip, however, and it’s unclear if ASUS could fit a standalone GPU into the 15.5mm-thick form-factor. So, more questions than answers right now, but we’ll know more in a few weeks time.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S available online, reaches Best Buy on June 23rd

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S available online, reaches Best Buy on June 23rd

Lenovo teased a potential sweet spot in its convertible laptop line when it revealed the IdeaPad Yoga 11S, blending the portability of the Yoga 11 with the raw performance of the Yoga 13. As of now, we can do more than just imagine how well that balance works: the Yoga 11S is at last available to order. Those who plunk down at least $800 can buy the bendy Windows 8 PC online from either Best Buy or Lenovo, although shoppers will want to think carefully before jumping in with both feet. While both outlets equip their Yogas with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive at that price, Best Buy lists a 1.5GHz Core i5 where Lenovo starts with a more modest 1.4GHz Core i3. No matter which outlet beckons, would-be owners will have to bide their time. Lenovo is quoting a four-week wait for new shipments, and Best Buy will only see the Yoga 11S grace its retail stores on June 23rd.

AMD unveils Radeon HD 8900M laptop graphics, ships them in MSI’s GX70 (eyes-on)

AMD unveils Radeon HD 8900M laptop graphics, ships them in MSI's GX70 eyeson

Did you think AMD showed all its mobile GPU cards when it launched the Radeon HD 8000M series in January? Think twice. The company has just unveiled the 8900M series, an adaptation of its Graphics Core Next architecture for desktop replacement-class gaming laptops. To call it a big jump would be an understatement: compared to the 8800M, the flagship 8970M chip doubles the stream processors to 1,280, hikes the clock speed from 725MHz to 850MHz and bumps the memory speed slightly to 1.2GHz. The net effect is about 12 to 54 percent faster game performance than NVIDIA’s current mobile speed champion, the GTX 680M, and up to four times the general computing prowess in OpenCL. The 8970M is more than up to the task of powering up to 4K in one screen, and it can handle up to six screens if there are enough ports.

We’ll see how long AMD’s performance reign lasts, although we won’t have to wait to try the 8970M — MSI is launching the GPU inside the new GX70 laptop you see above. We got a brief, hands-off tease of the 17.3-inch GX60 successor at the 8900M’s unveiling, and it’s clear the graphics are the centerpiece. We saw it driving Crysis 3 very smoothly on one external display while powering 2D on two other screens, albeit through a bulky set of Mini DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA cables. Otherwise, the GX70 is superficially similar to its ancestor with that chunky profile, an unnamed Richland-based AMD A10 processor, Killer networking and a SteelSeries keyboard. More than anything, price should be the clincher: MSI is pricing the GX70 with the new Radeon at $1,100, which amounts to quite the bargain for anyone whose laptop has to double as a primary gaming PC.

Ask Engadget: best sub-$1000 Ultrabook?

Ask Engadget best sub$1000 Ultrabook

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget inquiry is from Meredith, who needs a new Ultrabook so she can go to law school. If you’re looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“I’m going to law school and I’ll need a new laptop. Since I’ll be commuting with a long train ride each way, I’m looking for a sub-$1000 device with Windows, a long battery life, SSD and it has to be lightweight. I don’t need anything too powerful as I’m not doing any gaming, but something that’ll work reliably for the next three years would be ideal for lecturers, web browsing and word processing. Is there a bargain to be had now, or should I wait for back-to-school Ultrabooks to come out? Thanks!”

In your humble narrator’s position, waiting a few months for a Haswell device, which promises significantly increased battery life might be a wise choice. However, if you’re not too fussed about a touchscreen device, then our laptop expert feels that Samsung’s Series 9 might be the way forward. Of course, this isn’t just a private enquiry, so let’s share this out with the wider community and see what they can come up with. It’s Ask Engadget, folks, you know the drill.

NEC launches VersaPro VX business laptop, VG Ultrabook in Japan

NEC launches VersaPro VX business laptop, VG Ultrabook in Japan

You probably won’t ever see these latest NEC computers hit retailers on this side of the Pacific, but if you do your laptop shopping in Japan, it’s time to listen up. NEC’s just flooded the market with a bounty of fresh models, all likely destined for corporate IT departments, and maybe a few homes.

There are a few additions to the Mate series, including an MG all-in-one, along with ML, ME and MB slim towers. Then, on the portables front, there’s some VB, VH, VD and VA notebooks, followed by two standouts: a VX laptop for 138,500 JPY ($1,400) and a VG Ultrabook priced at a whopping 261,000 JPY (about $2,650). That first model is available with Intel Core i3 or i5 processors, a WXGA 15.6-inch LCD and integrated graphics. The pricey Ultrabook, for its part, can be had with a Core i5 or i7 processor, four gigs of RAM, a 1,600 x 900-pixel 13.3-inch LCD, integrated graphics and either Windows 8 Pro or Windows 7 (huzzah!). There’s plenty more to discover, of course, but we’ll leave that up to you. NEC loyalists can get their fix (in Japanese) at the source link below.

Sony Vaio Fit laptop announced

Sony has just announced a spanking new laptop for the masses that will come with something that most modern day devices have – a touchscreen display. Yes sir, the new Sony Vaio Fit laptop will boast of Sony’s innovative digital imaging, sound and display technologies, where it is tipped to deliver a fair number of features that are similar to those found in their thin and powerful ultra-premium models, albeit without breaking the bank since you would most probably come face to face with an entry-level price point.

The new Fit range has been optimized for the Windows 8 platform, where it will incorporate the best technology which Sony can muster, bringing along with it the strengths from their innovative digital imaging, sound and TV divisions. The all new Vaio Fit and Fit E product ranges are an excellent portable companion, with Sony focusing heavily on design without compromising on performance. As for the Vaio Fit 14 and 15 models alongside the Vaio Fit 14E and Fit 15E models which are extremely thin and light, all of them will come crafted in tough, aluminum materials, with the Vaio Fit 14 and 15 models sporting Sony’s signature sparkling diamond cut Vaio logo.

The very same folks behind the amazing TVs from Sony also worked on this particular Vaio Fit range, where you will find high resolution displays at Full HD (1920 x 1080) on the Fit 15 model and HD+ (1600 x 900) on the Fit 14 model, in addition to color enhancement technology for an unbelievably crisp picture – elevating your movies and games to the next level. There is also the option to throw in a capacitive touchscreen display, which paves the way for a snappy and responsive touch experience while the LED backlight would ensure a bright display while conserving battery life.

Sony Windows 8 13″ hybrid-slider leaks: Is this the VAIO Duo 13?

A larger version of Sony’s VAIO Duo 11 convertible hybrid notebook has been spotted, apparently boasting a 13-inch Full HD touchscreen and the same sliding hinge design turning the slate into a laptop. The unannounced notebook, spotted in a YouTube video (which you can see after the cut), reportedly has a Triluminos touchscreen that works with both finger and stylus contact.

sony_slider_13-inch_leak

Inside, there’s supposedly an Intel Core i5 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive. On the back, Sony has slapped on an 8-megapixel camera using one of its Exmor RS sensors, and there’s a backlit keyboard along with NFC.

Other specifications include “ClearAudio+” sound and what Sony is supposedly describing as “ActiveSleep”, a power management technology the company attempted to trademark back in February. The unnamed slider – though we’d hazard a guess at Sony VAIO Duo 13, given its smaller stablemate – will apparently run for up to 10hrs on a single charge.

The video was supposedly filmed during internal training at UK tech retail chain Dixons, according to one NotebookReview forum member. While no release information was given, the uploader claims there should be more details in a couple of weeks time.
