Toshiba adds Haswell to refreshed Satellite U and M laptops

While Toshiba already outed its Haswell plans, the company has chosen today to unveil a few more PCs. The outfit’s refreshing its Satellite U and M range in the UK, with the U50t being equipped with a 10-point touchscreen and Windows 8 onboard. The Satellite M50D and M50Dt, meanwhile, boast AMD’s latest APU processors and Radeon graphics. The whole line (which is slated for dispatch in Q3) ships with Intel’s fourth-generation processors and HD 4400 graphics, while those needing a bit more oomph on the pixel pushing side can opt for NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 740M. As you’d expect, Intel’s WiDi and Miracast technologies are infused, and each machine arrives with a full-size HDMI port, Bluetooth 4.0, an SD card slot and a pair of USB 3.0 sockets. Tosh isn’t talking pricing just yet, but you can dig into the specification list just after break.

Corning introduces Gorilla Glass NBT for touch-enabled laptops, coming this fall

DNP Corning introduces Gorilla Glass NBT for touchbased laptops, available this fall

While we love our gadgets for their glass-capacitive touchscreens, they can be sensitive to scratches and fingerprints. Corning, best known for protecting our phone and tablet displays, is introducing Gorilla Glass NBT for touch-enabled laptops. This new ultra-strong covering promises enhanced scratch resistance, reduced flaw visibility and better retained strength once a blemish occurs — basically, the same benefits as GG3. Dell is the first manufacturer to jump on-board with NBT and plans to use it on some notebooks this fall. Does this mean you wont have to be nearly as careful when schlepping your computer in a messenger bag? Probably not, but at least your precious displays will be safer from errant kitty paws. PR after the break.

Toshiba outs Satellite E45t / E55 mid-range laptops, Intel models have Dragon Assistant pre-loaded

Toshiba outs Satellite E45t / E55 mid-range ultraportables, Intel models have Dragon Assistant pre-loaded

A few months after introducing its Kirabook flagship, Toshiba is back with some mid-range laptops that bring some of the same understated design elements. The 14-inch Satellite E45t Ultrabook and the 15-inch E55, announced today, have the same pared-down look as the Kirabook, except they’re made of aluminum instead of pressed magnesium, and the bottom isn’t made of metal but rather, textured plastic. The screen resolution is also lower, at 1,366 x 768; these are middle-of-the-road machines, after all. On the bright side, they all support 802.11ac WiFi — of a surprise on otherwise humdrum systems like these. The E45t, which will be sold only at Best Buy and on Toshiba’s site, comes in just one configuration, with a Core i5 Haswell processor and a 500GB hard drive paired with an SSD. Perhaps most interesting, though, is that the E45t will come with Dragon Assistant on board for simple voice commands (think: shutting down the computer, doing a web search, controlling multimedia playback, et cetera). You can expect to find that next week, on August 4th, with a suggested retail price of $818, though a Toshiba rep told us it’ll likely sell for $799.99 once it actually hits shelves. Just a heads-up.

The 15-inch version, meanwhile, will be offered with either a Core i5 processor and touchscreen (that’s the E55t) or a quad-core A6 APU. There are actually two AMD models: one configuration comes with a touchscreen (that would be the E55Dt) and one has a non-touch panel (that’s the E55D). Strangely, the non-touch model also offers lesser storage; that has a 750GB HDD, while the touch version goes up to a full terabyte. Either way, you get a number pad, which you won’t find on the 14-incher, though you’ll be missing out on that Dragon Assistant app with the AMD models. These will be available in September, a little later than the 14-inch model, with the non-touch E55D going for $580 and the touchscreen E55Dt priced at $700. We haven’t yet confirmed pricing for the E55t, that lone Intel-based model, but we’ll update this post once we do.

Lie-Down Laptop Stand Lets You Work Like an Astronaut in Bed

If you find yourself lying in bed trying to read emails or get some work done, you know it can be tricky to hold your laptop in the right position if you want to lie down. Now, thanks to this gadget, you can use your laptop while lying flat on your back.

lying down laptop stand

It’s unclear how the stand holds onto your laptop when lying upside-down, but the image above suggests that you might need a bungee or rubber band of some sort to hold it in place. There’s definitely a lip that holds the front edge in place.

In addition to the configuration shown above, Uncaged Ergonomics‘ highly-adjustable WorkEZ Executive stand can be used in a wide variety of positions, as a standing desk or even as a tray table in bed. The aluminum stand can hold items up to 22 inches-wide, and can stand up to 2 feet-tall. it’s also got ventilation holes built into the bottom to help keep your computer cool.

Dell Precision M3800 workstation surfaces in official “Coming Soon” page

Last week, a Dell spokesperson confirmed to SlashGear that the company was working on the Dell Precision M3800, with plans to unveil it later in the year. Images and specs for the powerhouse laptop appeared online, but now Dell has an official page up giving us a somewhat detailed look at the machine, including specs and a couple videos.

The Dell spokesperson told us last week, ““Dell is introducing the thinnest and lightest workstation ever later this year. The Dell Precision M3800 is the first mobile workstation that is less than 3/4 of an inch, at 18mm, weighs only 4.5lbs and offers certified performance and dependability for creative professionals. We are not releasing or confirming any additional details today but stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.”

Fortunately, we didn’t have to wait long to get some official details. According to the “Coming Soon” page on Dell’s website, the Precision M3800 weighs in at 4.5 pounds, and measures in at a svelte 18mm in thickness, as the spokesperson state. As the leak had said, the display will be a QHD+ resolution of 3,200 x 1,800, a jump over the MacBook Pro 15′s 2,880 x 1,800 resolution. There will also be multi-touch support.

Inside, there’s a fourth-generation Intel Core i7 processor, and graphics come by way of NVIDIA Quadro. The Dell website doesn’t get too far into the details, but according to the leak that surfaced last week, this will be a K1100M GPU offering from the maker, and there will be up to 2GB of dedicated memory available.

That’s the extent of the information that Dell is providing on the laptop at this time, but word has it the machine features four USB 3.0 slots, an HDMI port, and an SD card reader. There’s no Ethernet, which is unfortunate for some users, instead being replaced with a dongle for those who need it. The battery options are also pegged at 61Wh or 91Wh.

Price is said to be between $1699 and $1999 USD.

Dell officially unveils Precision M3800 workstation at SIGGRAPH, gives rumored specs a nod

Dell officially unveils Precision M3800 workstation at SIGGRAPH, gives rumored specs a nod

Remember that Haswell-powered Dell workstation that popped up last week? The company is officially ready to acknowledged its silicon, announcing on its corporate blog that the machine is being unveiled at SIGGRAPH this week. Dell is still reluctant to get into specifics, but confirmed on a teaser page that the Precision M3800 would contain a 4th Generation Intel Core-i7 CPU, NVIDIA Quadro graphics and a 3,200 x 1,800 QHD+ multi-touch IGZO display. Even better, all that is set to fit into a tight 0.7-inch chassis that weighs in at 4.5 pounds. Mum’s still the word on specifics, but previous leaks assigned the machine 15GB of RAM and either a 1TB HDD or a 512GB SSD. Dell hasn’t let the workstation’s price slip either, but we don’t expect it to be cheap — nothing thin and powerful ever is.

Gateway unveils slimmer NE laptops, updates DX, SX and One ZX desktops

Gateway unveils slimmer NE laptops, refreshed DX, SX and ZX desktops

Gateway may live in the shadow of its parent company Acer, but it’s getting the spotlight today with refreshed versions of its entry-level PCs. New versions of its 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch NE Series laptops are slimmer than their ancestors, carry Kabini-based AMD A4 and A6 processors and offer up to 1TB of storage. Desktops remain largely the same on the outside, but there’s a few welcome tweaks on the inside. Although the small SX Series isn’t radically different, regular DX Series towers now have the option of a Haswell-era Intel Core i5 alongside recent AMD A-series chips; there’s also a new entry-level version of the One ZX all-in-one that puts a 3GHz Pentium behind the 21.5-inch LCD. Gateway is now shipping the two NE portables at baseline prices of $380 (15.6-inch) and $450 (17.3-inch), while the DX, SX and One Z lines respectively start at $298, $398 and $530. A KX Series of desktop displays is shipping at the same time, starting at $99 for a 19.5-inch screen.

Bombata Bags for Tablets/Laptops: Lug Around Your Machines in Style

Laptop briefcases and sleeves tend to blend together after a while, because most of them look the same and are pretty boring. That’s one of the reasons why an Italian designer decided to come up with something with a bit more flair.

Bombata bags are supposed to marry technical expertise with fashion sensibilities. Unlike most laptop bags, they’re not bulky, and some function like sleeves, so they can be used inside larger bags to keep your electronics safe.

Bombata bags are made from durable vinyl, and offered in a number of different colors and sizes. They start with the tablet-friendly Micro Bombata and go up all the way to the Chubby Bombata, which can hold much more than just a laptop. Prices start at about $45(USD) and go up to about $110.

Dell Precision M3800 MacBook Pro rival confirmed: 3200 x 1800 display rumored

Dell has confirmed to SlashGear that it is readying an unannounced mobile workstation, the Precision M3800, tipped to take on Apple’s MacBook Pro with a Retina-besting 3200 x 1800 15.6-inch display. Due to hit desks before the year is out, the new notebook packs a quadcore Intel Core i7-4702MQ processor and up to 16GB of memory, according to Tweakers, and a choice of either 1TB of standard hard-drive space or 512GB of SSD storage.

dell_precision_m3800_leak

It’s the display that’s most interesting, though, with the Precision M3800 said to offer a choice of resolutions from 1920 x 1080 Full HD, up to a whopping 3200 x 1800. Considering Apple’s MacBook Pro 15 has 2880 x 1800, that would put the M3800 just ahead.

Driving that display is expected to be NVIDIA’s Quadro K1100M GPU, complete with up to 2GB of dedicated memory. If the graphics chip sounds unfamiliar then you’re not alone; it’s not yet been announced by NVIDIA.

Ports on the 15.6-inch notebook are said to include four USB 3.0, HDMI, and an SD card reader, though no ethernet connection; instead, Dell is said to have followed Apple’s example and relied on a separate adapter dongle for that. There’s still room for either 61Wh or 91Wh batteries, though, though no word on how long the Precision M3800 will last on a full charge.

The Windows 8 notebook will be offered with or without a touchscreen, and Dell will supposedly be charging between $1,699 and $1,999 for the matte black, aluminum-trimmed machine.

Dell would not confirm the full specifications, though did tell SlashGear that the notebook is indeed an upcoming model.

“Dell is introducing the thinnest and lightest workstation ever later this year” a spokesperson told us. “The Dell Precision M3800 is the first mobile workstation that is less than 3/4 of an inch, at 18mm, weighs only 4.5lbs and offers certified performance and dependability for creative professionals. We are not releasing or confirming any additional details today but stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.”
