iTwin Connect updated with Mac support, offers inter-OS personal VPNs

Back in 2009, we might have been a little, well, acerbic in our reaction to the initial iTwin. Yet here we are in good ole 2013, and the plucky USB networking key is alive and well. In fact, it was CES when we saw its latest incarnation — iTwin Connect — arrive offering (somewhat more useful) private and public VPN services. At the time this was for Windows only, but that’s now changed. Mac users can get the same remote desktop, file access and aforementioned VPN functionality, that will also work between machines of both creeds. If you’re on the fence about that $199 price tag, remember that comes with access to iTwin’s own public VPN servers, and no subscription fee.

EE adding shared 4G, PAYG data-only plans this summer, now boasts 500k subscribers

EE adding shared 4G, PAYG dataonly plans this summer 500k subscribers now on board

After adding monthly SIM-only plans to its product line-up last week, EE’s announced a few new subscriptions that people will have access to at some point this summer. One is a shared option, which’ll allow patrons to use their plan “across phones and tablets, or with other people.” The other is a PAYG data-only option, so you’ll be able to buy gigabytes without signing up for anything long-term, and gobble them up on your tablet, laptop, MiFi device or anything else with a SIM slot. We don’t have any firm launch dates or pricing for either of these plans, but more is expected “in the coming weeks.” In other news, the number of customers on EE’s LTE network has exceeded the half a million mark, meaning around 200,000 new subscribers have come on board since April.

Acer shows off Aspire R7 Star Trek edition, we go eyes-on at Computex

Acer shows off Aspire R7 Star Trek edition, we go eyeson at Computex

No, we’re not making this up. We’ve always thought the Aspire R7 bore an uncanny resemblance to the USS Enterprise, and now it appears that Acer’s officially in on the fun, too. Our friends at Engadget Chinese stumbled upon a new version of the starship-esque convertible at Acer’s Computex booth today — the company manufactured just 25 of these special-edition notebooks, one of which it plans to offer up on eBay from June 14th through the 24th, with all proceeds going to charity. This variant is unique enough for us to look past the device’s shortcomings, and perhaps place a bid of our own. Star Trek (and industrial design) fans can get their fix in the eyes-on gallery just below.

Microsoft previews Windows 8.1 on camera, forgets the Start button (video)

Microsoft previews Windows 8.1 on camera, forgets the Start button (video)

While it’s not exactly our “first look” at Windows 8.1, Microsoft’s put together an official preview video showing off several features of the OS update. If you caught our overview of what’s coming in the next version, there isn’t anything in the clip you won’t know already — in fact, the (sort of) return of the Start button isn’t discussed at all, although it does briefly pop up on the screen of the Surface Pro used in the demo. You’ve been reading about it and inspecting screengrabs, but if an official video talkthrough is what you’ve been hankering for, there’s four and a half minutes of just that waiting for you after the break.

Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y510p high-perf laptop: Haswell Core i7, NVIDIA 750M, $989

 EDIT Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p

What’s Lenovo been hiding up its sleeve? Apparently, it’s the IdeaPad Y510p. The company has recently started selling the 15.6-inch multimedia laptop via New Egg and its website without prior announcement. A follow-up to the Y500, the Y510p is powered by Intel’s new Haswell Core i7 2.4GHz quad-core processor and is equipped with NVIDIA’s 750M GPU. Lenovo claims a 5-hour battery life, which doesn’t sound too implausible given what we recently squeezed out of MSI’s Core i7 gamer. There’s no official word on thickness, but readers at the Notebook Review forum reported that it has a slightly thinner profile. The company has also replaced its predecessor’s glossy screen with a full HD matte, anti-glare display. Prices for the IdeaPad Y510p start at $989 after applying an e-coupon, but if you’re willing to shell out more cash, you can double its 8GB RAM, add another graphics card, supplement its 1TB HDD with a 24GB SSD, and install a Blu-ray-slash-DVD-RW optical drive. If you’re looking for something smaller (yet more expensive), then check out Sony’s VAIO Pro 13.

Gigabyte reveals prices, availability for NVIDIA-equipped U-Series Haswell notebooks

Gigabyte reveals prices, availability for NVIDIA graphicsequipped USeries

Since not everybody wants to lug an eight pound gaming machine or settle for a lightweight but graphics-challenged notebook, Gigabyte unveiled its U-series at Computex: two notebooks and an ultrabook with discreet NVIDIA graphics and 4th-generation Intel CPUs. The models build on the company’s last-gen 14-inch U2442 Ultrabook, which unlike most models in that category, carried GeForce GT640M graphics and a generous supply of ports while still maintaining a respectable 3.3 pound heft. Gigabyte’s looking to continue in that vein with the new models, which will all arrive by early August. To see a breakdown on all the pricing and specs, head after the break.
