Dell’s S2240T touch monitor boasts 21.5-inch full HD panel, 60-degree tilt

EDIT Dell launches S2240T A 215inch full HD touch monitor

Dell may already have a 23-inch multi-touch display, but if you’re looking for something a little smaller and cheaper, then we have good news for you. The company informed us of its new model named “S2240T,” a 21.5-inch touch monitor with the same 1,920 x 1,080 resolution as its larger sibling. It also stands on a sliding base that can tilt as much as 60 degrees, but unlike the other model this one can’t lay flat. Other features include HDMI, DVI and VGA ports, as well as a relatively efficient power consumption of just 20W. Dell’s already offering the S2240T on its website for $399.99 — quite a drop from the S2340T’s $699.99 price tag. Hit the source link for more information.

Casio Commando LTE hits Verizon soon: ruggedness leaks

It’s time again to speak of devices that haven’t yet been confirmed by their makers or their carriers, in this case coming on a very hardcore tip. It’s the rebirth of the Casio G’zOne Commando, this time with 4G LTE connectivity and a new hardware setup made to take on the elements, just as its predecessor did. Is this the watchmaker’s new best attempt at a smartphone you’ve just got to toss down a flight of stairs?

Screen-Shot-2013-04-02-at-11-1.00.07-AM

This device has been rumored to be coming with a dual-core 1.5Ghz processor (this likely coming from Qualcomm), 1GB of RAM, and an 1800 mAh battery under the back hood. Inside you’ll find 16GB of internal memory, a microSD card slot for memory expansion of up to 64GB, and the display up front measures in at a cool 4-inches.

With 480 x 800 pixel resolution on this relatively small TFT LCD display, it’s going to be a hard sell to those looking for the best of the best. But that’s not Casio’s market, is it? Instead this device will be sold to those working at construction sites and bashing their way through the forest on a regular basis.

SlashGear has received a tip leading us to believe that this device – having already seen the FCC (the images above and below come from the FCC, mind you) earlier this year – is indeed coming to Verizon Wireless soon. This tip comes from a list of devices that also contained the Verizon version of the HTC One, sourced from @evleaks, a leakster who is seldom wrong.

If the projected possible release window for the HTC One is any indicator, this Casio smartphone will be out before the end of Summer 2013. Casio’s original G’zOne Commando was released in May of 2011.

Samsung opens US-based patent beachhead focused on display tech

Samsung quietly opened a USbased patent arm focused on display tech

Smartphone patent disputes may get all the glory, but display battles can be no less pitched. To that end, Samsung launched a US IP company in March sans fanfare called Intellectual Keystone Technology (IKP) to “trade and develop” OLED and LCD patents, according to The Korea Times. A spokesman said the company opened the office as a way to smooth innovation, but also warned that it intends to use it “to protect our intellectual property by strengthening our patent-related business.” So far, it’s already shored up Samsung’s portfolio by purchasing display tech from Seiko Epson — after all, it never hurts to have as many cards up your sleeve as you can when things get ugly.

3M, Nanosys ready to bring quantum dot film to LCD makers

3M's upcoming quantum dot film brings 50 percent more color to LCDs

3M and Nanosys have just announced that they’ll start shipping qualification samples of their Quantum Dot Enhancement Film (QDEF) to manufacturers to bring a 50 percent wider color gamut and lower power consumption to LCD displays. Consisting of trillions of quantum dots tuned to create precise color hues, such films can be swapped in to replace existing backlighting tech, meaning manufacturers will need no special equipment to adopt it. The companies say they’ll have samples for manufacturer design cycles starting “late second quarter this year” — but if you can’t wait that long, you’ll be able to actually buy similar tech from Sony, likely very soon.

LG to demo 5-inch unbreakable and flexible plastic OLED panel at SID

LG to demo 5inch flexible and unbreakable plastic OLED panel at SID 2013

LG’s got quite a bit in store for us this week at SID’s annual display exhibition in Vancouver. In addition to that 55-inch curved OLED TV we first heard about last month, the company will be demonstrating a very nifty 5-inch OLED panel. Created for mobile devices, the display is constructed of plastic, making it both flexible and unbreakable — certainly a welcome quality when it comes to smartphone design.

Also on display will be 5- and 7-inch HD Oxide TFT panels. That first size features a bezel that’s just 1mm wide, enabling a borderless frame when installed in smartphones. Both displays are lightweight and consume less power than their traditional equivalents. Finally, LG will have a 14-inch 2560×1440-pixel laptop panel on hand, along with LCDs designed for use in refrigerators and automotive dashboards. We’ll be live from the SID show floor later this week — check back for our hands-ons with all of these new LG panels, and quite a bit more.

Corning intros Lotus XT Glass for next-gen mobile displays, touts more efficient production (video)

Corning Lotus XT Glass allows for widespread nextgen mobile displays video

Corning’s Lotus Glass promised a world full of thinner, more advanced mobile displays when it was unveiled in 2011, but it hasn’t always been easy to build with the volumes or features that customers want. Enter the company’s new Lotus XT Glass as the solution: clients can produce it more reliably at high temperatures, leading to more usable panels for our LCDs and OLEDs. The improved yields should not only result in larger device volumes than the original Lotus Glass could muster, but push the technological limits — Corning notes that hotter manufacturing allows for brighter, sharper and more efficient screens. The glass is commercially available today, although we’ll still need to wait for gadget makers to choose, implement and ship it before we notice the XT difference.

Olympus PEN E-P5 relaunches original PEN F with digital build

Clad with the aesthetics of a 50-year-old film camera, the Olympus PEN E-P5 is being launched by the manufacturer for the anniversary of the original, here in 2013 filled instead with digital features throughout. This camera is what Olympus notes is the first Compact System Camera to work with a mechanical shutter capable of a speed of 1/8000th of a second. Clad with a 16-Megapixel TruePic VI Live MOS sensor as well as a 5-Axis Image Stabilization mechanism inside, the introduction of this camera by Olympus appears to be aimed both lovers of retro style and those looking for the company’s furthest pushes forward in imaging technology alike.

olympusfirs

Olympus has made an effort to point out the similarities between this new PEN E-P5 and what’s considered their premier Micro Four Thirds camera – the Olympus OM-D E-M5. We had our own review of said camera back when it was unveiled this past summer, experiencing the features carried over to this new model: the sensor (mentioned above), FAST AF, and the 5-Axis Image Stabilization (also mentioned above).

ahw

The autofocus system in the E-P5 was developed in part in the OM-D E-M5, powering a new Super Spot AF feature which Olympus says is more precise than phase-difference autofocus systems across the board. This system also works with Focus Peaking, “dramatically” improving the usability of any manual focus action you’ll be working with by taking the point of focus and emphasizing its contours in black or white. We’ll see how that works in our first hands-on tests.

h3ww

The 5-Axis Image Stabilization system has been updated since its first appearance on the OM-D E-M5, here appearing in a more compact form, small enough to fit inside the E-P5. This system can be used to reduce camera shaking while you’re taking photos or, in combination with this unit’s Multi-motion IS feature, helps to create a stable image while recording video.

The PEN E-P5′s wifi system allows the user to wirelessly connect to their smartphone at will. Bringing up the camera’s built-in automatically generated QR-code on its LCD display, the user will be automatically connected to the camera’s wifi network with a quick scan of said QR-code with their smartphone. From there, users will be able to work with the app Olympus Image Share 2.0 for smartphone control, remote viewfinder, and GPS information embeds.

a33

The E-P5 works with several features the photographer may have otherwise needed off-camera software or hardware to recreate, starting with Photo Story+. This feature allows the user to automatically plant a stamp or hand-written signature into each photo they take, this allowing them to upload images automatically with Olympus Image Share 2.0 worry-free. With a signature on top of the photo right out of the gate, sharing with the world can be done in one less step than without this process.

asdfahawe

The back of the E-P5 has a tilt-type LCD panel able to be aimed downward at 50-degrees and upward at 80-degrees, allowing for holds low and high. Users also have the option of working with this device’s high-definition VF-4 viewfinder with 1.48x magnification on an LCD with real-time eye detection.

hrwehwq

Lenses for the E-P5 include every unit inside the Micro Four Thirds family and, as per usual, there are several versions of this device coming out – some with a lens, some without. There’s a body-only version appearing this month for an estimated street price of $999.99 in black, silver, or white (each of these shown above). Meanwhile there will be just black or silver bodies available for the $1449.99 version of the device, this package bringing with it the black M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm f1.8 lens and VF-4 Electronic Viewfinder lens.

Sharp rumored to start producing next-generation iPhone LCDs this June

Sharp rumored to be producing nextgeneration iPhone LCD screens

Flush from that springtime financing boost from Samsung, Sharp‘s reportedly readying production of new screens for Apple’s next smartphone. According to Nikkan Kogyo, one of Japan’s business dailies, the display manufacturer will start making LCD panels for the next iPhone in its Kameyama plant this June, although there’s no specifics about size and resolution differences compared to the iPhone 5. Company team-up Japan Display (which includes LG Display, Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba) has also allegedly received orders from Apple, with production already underway. With the combined might of all those screen-makers, Apple should be able to sidestep any possible screen component delays.
