Wacom Cintiq 22HD Touch adds finger-friendliness to graphics display

Wacom has revealed its latest pen-enabled graphics display, the Cintiq 22HD Touch, adding finger control to the stylus-equipped Full HD LCD monitor. The new version pairs a 16.7m color, 1920 x 1080 panel on an adjustable easel stand with the ability to use both Wacom’s special active-digitizer stylus or your fingertips for art apps, multitouch in Windows 7/8 and OS X, and more.

As with the non-touch variant of the Cintiq 22HD, this new screen recognizes up to 2048 different levels of pressure from the digital pen, as well as +/-60 levels of tilt on the pen’s nib. The included stylus also has an eraser head on the other end.

Spread around the bezel there are multiple shortcut buttons, with a total of sixteen customizable ExpressKeys – that can change function depending on which application has focus – on either side of the display. Touch-strips, meanwhile, are on the back of the panel, and can be programmed to control zooming, scrolling, bruss size, or rotation of the canvas.

The panel itself supports between 10- and 65-degree incline, and can be rotated by 180-degrees in either direction. It’s priced at $2,499 in the US and £1,899.99 in the UK.

Apple screen sales slump skewers LG Display

An over-reliance on Apple’s custom has left LG Display in the lurch with its LCD screen sales, having seen profits pale alongside a shrink in panel demand. The screen company saw tablet and smartphone panel sales drop 4-percent in Q1 this year, versus Q4 2012, which analysts have blamed on smaller than expected orders from Apple. The Cupertino firm’s iPad and iPhone display requirements are believed to account for around 30-percent of LG Display’s revenue.

LG Display finds itself in a precarious position, then, as it faces an uncertain 2013. Its Q1 performance was a marked improvement year-on-year, but down 74-percent quarter-on-quarter. Meanwhile, Apple’s requirements for the coming months aren’t clear, though some market watchers have suggested that the company’s demands might spike sharply amid chatter of a cheaper iPhone model for developing markets.

The Korean firm isn’t giving specifics, but did say on Monday that it expected panel shipments to rise between 5- and 10-percent in Q2, versus Q1. If talk of a July budget iPhone launch pans out, that would suggest parts shipments from LG Display to begin roughly in June, potentially ending the quarter on an uptick in sales.

Overall, LG Display made 151bn won ($135m) in Q1 2013, down from 211bn won a year previous. Further down the line, a new iPad is tipped to be likely to drop in September, with LG Display providing some of the screens for that model too.

Meanwhile, the company is attempting to diversify and bring prices of alternative technologies to LCD, such as OLED, down to more affordable levels. Back in February, LG Display announced it would be investing the equivalent of $655m into OLED manufacturing refinements, so as to offset stagnating demand in TV-scale LCD screens.

AOC Cinematic 29-inch Display Rocks 21:9 Aspect Ratio on the Cheap

I’m a huge fan of movies and I like watching my favorite flicks on the big screen in my media room and on my computer screen. One thing that always bothers me about watching widescreen movies are the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. There are a few projector screens and other products on the market today that have a special aspect ratio eliminating those black bars.

AOC has just announced a new 29-inch computer monitor that uses the 21:9 super widescreen aspect ratio that will eliminate black bars on your favorite movie content.

The display is called the Q2963PM and it has a native resolution of 2560 x 1080. The LED-backlit screen claims a dynamic contrast ratio of 50,000,000:1 (which doesn’t really mean much) and a brightness rating of 250 cd/m2.  It also features dual three-watt speakers.

The display supports picture-in-picture, and has multiple inputs including DisplayPort, D-sub, HDMI, and DVI. The screen is good for more than watching movies though with the wide aspect ratio bringing the benefits of multiple monitors into a single space-saving device.

While it’s not inexpensive compared to standard 16:9 aspect ratio monitors, it’s the best priced 21:9 display on the market so far, with a retail price of $499(USD). The AOC Q2963PM display is available over on Amazon now.

AOC unveils new 21:9 Cinematic 29-inch UltraWide display

AOC has announced the launch of a new and very interesting computer display. The display is the AOC Q2963PM and promises to bring dual monitor productivity to a single screen. The display is 29-inches wide and has an aspect ratio 21:9.

The screen has integrated dual three-watt enclosed speakers. The native resolution for the incredibly wide display is 2560 x 1080. AOC equips the device with multiple inputs including DVI, HDMI, D-Sub, and DisplayPort.

MHL technology is also integrated making it easy to mirror content from your smartphone on to the 29-inch-wide monitor. An aspect ratio of 21:9 may seem very strange, but it’s designed to allow the playback of widescreen movies without black bars in the top or bottom of the screen. The LCD panel used offers a dynamic contrast ratio of 50,000,000:1 and 178-degree viewing angles.

The panel is rated for brightness of 250 CD/M2 and promises a response time of five ms. AOC says that users of the business world will appreciate the ultra wide aspect ratio because allows easy viewing of multiple documents on the screen at the same time. The screen also supports 100 mm VESA mounts. The Q2963PM displays available online right now for $499.

JNM Display – Transparent LCD Monitor – LCD using ambient light that allows physical objects to be highlighted behind LCD display glass

JNM Display - Transparent LCD - LCD using ambient light that allows physical objects to be highlighted behind LCD display glass

Transparent LCD is a very interesting and effective way to mix LCD graphics and physical objects.

We saw a very interesting display of this technology by JNM Display Co., Ltd. at the Display 2013 (9th International FPD Expo) section of the 23rd FINETECH JAPAN at Tokyo Big Sight yesterday.

Transparent LCD operates by using ambient light without internal backlight. It enables you to look through the display glass on an exhibit to view content on the LCD and the product behind it.

As the LCD uses ambient light, the power consumption of the device itself is less than 90% compared with conventional LCDs of the same size.

This technology is very effective for signage and advertising for products in places with high physical traffic like shopping malls, airports, casinos, gaming areas, etc.

JNM Display Co., Ltd. is a company from Seoul, South Korea.

Top-of-the-line “W900A” also features Sony’s newly-developed “Triluminous Display” technology and “Long duct speakers” to output lush mid-low sound.

“W900A” and “W802A” have “One-touch mirroring function” to mirror NFC-compliant Xperia smartphone or tablet screens to the TV screen and “TV SideView” so that you can use your smart device as the TV’s remote control.

Panasonic reveals pricing for (most) 2013 HDTVs, puts plasma R&D on ice

Panasonic’s NYC press event had more than pricing for its media streamers and Blu-ray players, as the company also put tags on its 2013 HDTVs. While it wasn’t ready to announces MSRPs for its top of the line ZT60 plasmas that impressed us greatly at CES, it did put prices and shipping windows on its other models (check after the break for a complete list). The former flagship VT60 series will be available in 55-, 60- and 65-inch versions later this month for $2,600, $3,000 and $3,600, respectively. Cheaper plasma models include the ST60 and S60 series, available in sizes up to 60-inches. Its top of the line WT60 LCD LED-lit models will also ship later this month, topped by the 55-inch version with a sticker price of $2,999.

The bad news? While Panasonic’s plasma manufacturing will continue, The Verge reports VP Kiyoshi Okamoto confirmed at the event that development has ceased on its plasma models, although some engineers have been shifted to work on OLED displays. We’ll see if its recovery efforts and technological developments lead to new large-size OLEDs anytime soon, but for now it appears we’re seeing the last of its efforts to push plasma technology forward.
