Unannounced HP tablet glimpsed in official picture (again), could be Slate 8

Image

HP’s Make it Matter site features a shot of a medical-type person using a mysterious device that’s the spitting image of one we saw in July. While the company’s made no secret of its plans for a Windows 8 tablet, it’s yet to confirm if this is the Slate 8 or some other unannounced flagship. Given the context, perhaps this is an enterprise offering designed for corporate customers, or it could just as easily be the fever-dream of a Madison Avenue art director. If it’s real, we’d expect a release around October 26th along with the rest of the Windows 8 cohort.

Nokia Windows Phone 8 reveal in early September tips insider

Nokia’s first Windows Phone 8 smartphones could be revealed as early as September, sources claim, as the Finnish company attempts to beat Apple to the next-gen handset unveil. One or more new phones running Microsoft’s latest smartphone OS are set to be announced next month, Bloomberg‘s insider says, though availability is only pegged as in time for the holiday shopping season. In contrast, while Apple isn’t expected to confirm the iPhone 5 until midway through September, the company is likely to have the much-anticipated handset up for grabs within a month of that.

Nokia itself has declined to comment on the rumors, though the company has already confirmed it will be holding at least one event in early September. Rather than the sizable Nokia World of previous years, for 2012 the company plans a series of smaller, “more intimate” events more akin to SXSW in tone.

The first of those to be publicly announced is for carrier and channel partners, and will be held in the first week of September in Finland. The expectation, though, is that a similarly-timed launch for press is also on the cards.

Exactly what the new Nokia devices will look like is unclear, but the company will probably stick to its polycarbonate unibody style – as on the Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 – for at least some of the models. A new flagship is also more than likely, pre-emptively challenging the new iPhone and other high-spec Android devices, while it’s possible that Nokia could use some of the advanced camera technology from the 808 PureView for a photo-centric model.

That’s something Nokia has been whispering about for some time now, though the eventual production model is unlikely to pack the same 41-megapixel sensor as in the Symbian-based 808. Instead, Nokia is expected to balance bulk with camera abilities, with a more conservative sensor that still punches above its weight for cameraphone photography.

iPad Mini rear shell spotted in the wild

Well this is interesting: as we’re being inundated with rumors that Apple is set to reveal an iPad Mini, pictures of what appear to be the rear shell of such a device have surfaced on the Internet. The photos you see below were originally posted by Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo and later picked up by Apple.pro, and even though they do seem rather questionable (to say the least), the shell also does seem to posses the quality Apple is known for. Have a look for yourself.

What’s interesting about this shell is that it’s completely solid – there isn’t any hole for a rear-facing camera. That isn’t all that uncommon in smaller-sized tablets these days, as the Google Nexus 7 gets along just fine without a rear-facing camera. All in all though, this metal case looks similar to the rear shell of its full-sized brother, only in a smaller form.

MacRumors points out that the person who leaked these photos doesn’t have a history of Apple leaks, so it’s hard to establish credibility in this case. That fact alone makes us hesitant to say these photos are the real deal, and indeed, it’s always a good idea to approach rumors and leaks with a healthy amount of skepticism. The truth is that we don’t even know if Apple is planning to release an iPad Mini – though the evidence seems to lean in that direction – so nothing is confirmed until Apple makes an announcement.

Still, this is pretty intiguing stuff, especially with all of the hubbub about an incoming iPad Mini reveal. Current rumors claim that Apple will be announcing the iPad Mini alongside the iPhone 5 at an event in September, so we may not have that much longer to wait before we find out if these are legitimate or fake. Despite all the mystery, one thing is for sure: this whole thing about Apple planning an iPad Mini just got a lot more interesting. Stay tuned.

Alleged images of 7-inch iPad shell appear from the east

Image

Hey, did you hear… Apple is making a 7-inch iPad. Well, the top brass at least thought about it, this much we know. What might it look like if it ever comes to be? Well, if you’re willing to be a bit skeptical, it might look like the above. These images — claiming to be legit iPad parts — popped up on Chinese social media site Sina Weibo. There’s little other activity on the account to back up the source, and the omission of a camera hole might irk some, but if these were early parts, then that could be something that is added later. For now, we’re left to fill in the gaps with out imagination, which also includes hoping other recent teases might also make the leap into reality.

Rumored HTC One X+ with 1.7GHz Tegra 3 revealed in NenaMark report?

DNP Rumored HTC One X with 17GHz Tegra 3 revealed in NenaMark report

We’ve heard murmurings of it before, but they’ve been just that. Now we’ve got the first shred of hard evidence that the fabled HTC One X+ is actually real. Rumored to be heading to T-Mobile (or AT&T, depending on who you ask), this 1.7GHz super phone popped up over at NenaMark’s site, bearing the model number PM63100. Sadly, that internal moniker doesn’t really reveal much, but between that and the fact that it’s running Jelly Bean 4.1.1 we’re confident this isn’t something already on the market. And the reported resolution of 1280 x 720 combined with its high-speed Tegra 3 innards puts this squarely in flagship territory. What else do we know? Not a whole heck of a lot. But, as always, the truth will be revealed in time.

T-Mobile HTC One X+ rumored with quad-core and Jelly Bean

It appears that T-Mobile will soon be getting the HTC One X, although this time around it will be coming with slightly different branding. HTC’s powerhouse will apparently be called the HTC One X+ when it arrives at T-Mobile, and though there are many things that are similar to the currently-available One X, there are a few key differences. For instance, the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor will be returning in the One X+, giving the One X+ a pretty significant boost in processing power over AT&T’s dual-core model.

The One X+ will also be running Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean when it arrives, if the NenaMark2 benchmark results from TmoNews are to believed. The standard One X runs Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, so if this is true, the One X+ will be getting a pretty major upgrade as far as operating systems go.

Other than the increase in processing power and the shiny new install of Jelly Bean, the One X+ will be more or less the same as the One X. That 4.7-inch screen is still capable of running a resolution of 1280 x 720, which means 720p playback. The HTC One X+ apparently has been codenamed the HTC Evitaire for the moment, and currently, we don’t have any idea of when HTC is planning to pull the veil off this bad boy.

The HTC One X+ is said to making its debut at T-Mobile sometime in September, so anxious HTC fans may not have much longer to wait. Our pals over at Android Community have passed along a rumor that this may be headed to AT&T as well, but with the standard HTC X currently soaking up the spotlight at AT&T, that doesn’t seem all that likely. Anything goes in the realm of smartphones, however, so the HTC One X+ could very well be headed to AT&T’s shelves. Stay tuned.

Samsung confirms Galaxy Note 2 debut imminent

Samsung’s August 29 event at IFA 2012, confirmed yesterday, will indeed see the launch of the Galaxy Note 2 the company has reportedly revealed. Although the invitations Samsung issued yesterday to the Berlin press conference did not indicate which device or devices would be on the agenda, the Korean firm supposedly told Reuters that “we plan to unveil the next Galaxy Note at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event.”

That would mark a year since Samsung revealed the first Galaxy Note, the wraps for which were taken off back at IFA 2011. Opinions at the time were divided, with the handset’s oversized 5.3-inch touchscreen and digital stylus – with various customizations to the Android OS to accommodate the pen – leading some to dismiss the Note as neither as useful as a tablet nor as pocket-friendly as a smartphone.

However, consumer response to the Note was surprisingly warm, thus prompting Samsung’s attentions for a second version. The new Note 2 is believed to feature a 5.5-inch display, with a narrower bezel that means the phone itself can be no larger than the existing model.

According to leaked benchmarks, meanwhile, the Note 2 is also tipped to have an Exynos quadcore processor – like the Galaxy S III – clocked at 1.6GHz. There’s also evidence of a 1280 x 720 screen resolution and Ice Cream Sandwich as the OS; other tattle has indicated the camera will be polished as well.

SlashGear will be at IFA 2012 to bring back all the details.

Sony NEX-5R and NEX-7 WiFi cameras leak

Sony‘s next-gen interchangeable lens cameras, the NEX-5R and NEX-6, will include WiFi connectivity a listing at an Indonesian test agency has revealed. The detail spill came courtesy of POSTEL and was swiftly yanked, but not before Sony Alpha Rumors could snatch a screenshot. Although there was no further detail in either filing, the WiFi tech is expected to be used for wirelessly transferring shots from the camera to nearby computers and cloud galleries, among other things.

That could mean no longer having to plug in a USB cable or pull out the memory card to offload photos and video from your camera, as well as automatically uploading one or more shots to Flick, Facebook or other gallery services. However, it’s possible that Sony could also enable remote control of the new NEX cameras.

For instance, Samsung offers a free Android app for its NX1000 camera, itself WiFi-enabled, that allows the phone to be used as a wireless preview display. Sony could opt to do the same; meanwhile, the WiFi link could also be used to geotag photos using the handset’s own location services.

Other specifications are similarly the source of rumor. The NEX-5R is tipped to have a 180-degree flip screen along with a 16-megapixel sensor, while the NEX-6 has been said to have an integrated electronic viewfinder (though lower resolution than on the more expensive NEX-7).

Both cameras are believed to be headed to Photokina in September, along with a trio of new lenses including a prime, an 11-18mm pancake, and a 16-50mm pancake.

Unannounced Sony NEX-5R and NEX-6 cameras could pack wireless connectivity

Sony NEX 5R and NEX 6 appear on Indonesian POSTEL database with WiFiconnectivity

Sony’s NEX camera series hasn’t made much noise so far this year, aside from its new entry-level F3 model. But that’s likely to change soon, with a pair of new mirrorless model numbers appearing in Indonesian POSTEL listings. They’ve since been nixed, but not before the eagle eyes at Sony Alpha Rumors plucked this screen grab of the NEX-5R and NEX-6. It’s the Wireless LAN part (which resulted in this listing) that’s piqued our interested, suggesting that Sony’s next generation of ILCs will also board the wireless connectivity train. There’s no more detail to glean from the listing, although rumors (and hopeful prayers) point to an announcement ahead of premier camera show, Photokina, which kicks off next month.

[Thanks Andrea]

Final version of Windows 8 leaked online

Good news for those looking to get their hands on Windows 8 before everyone else does, the final build of Windows 8 has just been leaked online. This news comes a day after it was announced that the final version of Windows 8 had been finished. MSDN and TechMet customers won’t be able to download their version of Widnows 8 until August 15th, an enterprise version of Windows 8 is currently making rounds at different file sharing websites across the web.

Unfortunately, if you were hoping for the Windows Media Player to be included in this version, you’re out of luck as it is the “N” version of Windows 8 which doesn’t come with the Player. Microsoft was forced to create a “N” build of its operating system as the European Commission ruled in 2004 that they need to create a version of Windows OS without the Windows Media Player included. Microsoft has yet to release a comment on the situation yet. Consumers will be able to get their hands on Windows 8 officially starting October 26th. We’ll keep you updated on the situation as more info becomes available and let us know in the comments section below if you plan on downloading the leaked build of Windows 8.
