HTC Myst specs purportedly leak, hint at a second-gen social phone

HTC Myst specs purportedly leak, hint a second crack at a social phone

We wouldn’t exactly call the social networking-focused HTC ChaCha (aka Status) and Salsa resounding successes in the smartphone world when they were quickly overshadowed by… just about everything with a Facebook app, really. Still, there have been murmurs of a comeback, and Unwired View‘s historically reliable evleaks has obtained specs for what’s supposedly the follow-up. The HTC Myst (Myst #UL, to be exact) wouldn’t have any special tricks on the surface beyond preloaded Facebook apps, but it could be surprisingly well-equipped for a mid-range Jelly Bean device: a 4.3-inch 720p screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4, LTE and 16GB of non-expandable storage would be nothing to sneeze at. About the only sacrifices would be the 1GB of RAM and a potentially UltraPixel-free 5-megapixel rear camera. While there’s no guarantee that these details will reflect a shipping device, there’s talk of the Myst reaching the US as early as the spring — we won’t have long to learn the truth. Just don’t expect that other Myst in the box.

Samsung’s mirrorless NX1100 digital camera revealed in user manual

Last month, rumors surfaced that Samsung would be releasing a mirrorless NX1100 digital camera in the near future. Those rumors were just substantiated by Samsung itself, which posted a manual for the camera on its website ahead of the camera’s official unveiling, giving us a detailed look into its specs and particulars. Check out a picture of the device after the jump.

According to the manual, the Samsung NX1100 features a 21.6-megapixel CMOS sensor and a 3-inch TFT LCD display with VGA resolution. Focus is comprised of contrast auto focus, as well as single point/free selection focus, 15 to 35 point multi-point focus, and face detection that can spot up to ten faces. There’s also a green auto focus lamp to help ensure images are crisp.

ISO has a nice range from 100 to 12,800, and there are the standard modes: Single, Continuous, Burst (limited to 5-megapixel shots), Timer, and Bracket. Images can be taken in JPEG and RAW format. Burst mode ranges from 10 to 30 shots per second, depending on setting. There are 10 white balance modes, including Tungsten, Cloudy, Fluorescent, and Custom, as well as micro adjustments Amber, Blue, Green, and Magenta.

As for video, movies can be recorded in up to 1080p, with both 24fps and 30fps options available. There are several scene modes, such as Panorama, Sports, Children, and Fireworks. In addition, there are smart filters for adding effects, including Miniature, Fish Eye, Sketch, Vignetting, Halftone Dots, and Old Film. Audio is recorded in stereo.

Samsung posts NX1100 camera manual prematurely, shows a subtle upgrade

Samsung posts NX1100 camera manual, hints at a subtle upgrade

Samsung must not be very attached to the NX1000: the mirrorless camera isn’t even a year old, and its creator is already rushing to post details of the follow-up. Manuals for the NX1100 have surfaced on the company’s site that confirm the camera’s look while revealing details. And… it’s no great shakes, at least from what Samsung has disclosed. There’s still a 20.3-megapixel sensor, an ISO 12,800 sensitivity limit, a 3-inch LCD and 802.11n WiFi. Software also looks similar on the surface. As long as the manuals aren’t just placeholders, then, the improvements are likely tougher to quantify. We just hope that official documentation means a short wait.

Samsung to add “Smart Scroll” and “Smart Pause” in upcoming Jelly Bean update

We’ve talked about some of the rumored features coming to the Galaxy S IV in the past, including “Eye Scroll” and “Eye Pause,” two features that track your eyes in order to automatically scroll web pages or pause video, respectively. However, in a couple of leaked photos from an Android 4.2.1 update for the Galaxy S III, it looks like the feature will be coming to Samsung’s current flagship device under different names.

SamMobile ended up getting a few leaked screenshots from the update, and the “Eye Scroll” and “Eye Pause” features seem to be renamed to “Smart Scroll” and Smart Pause,” respectively. The screenshots were initially believed to have been from the Galaxy S IV, but SamMobile now says that they were taken from a Galaxy S III running the Android 4.2.1 update, which means that Smart Scroll and Pause features could come to GSIII at some point.

If you’re not familiar with these two new features, Smart Scroll essentially tracks your eye movement, and will automatically scroll up or down on a web page depending on if the camera notices your eyes reaching the top or bottom of the screen. Smart Pause also tracks your eyes, but when watching a video, the phone will automatically pause it when it notices your eyes gazing off of the screen.

Obviously, we hope to learn more about these features on March 14, when Samsung will be holding an event to hopefully announce the Galaxy S IV, or so that’s what we’re believing to be the main focal point at the show. Hopefully we hear more about Galaxy S III compatibility with some of these new features, which should definitely give long-time GSIII a boost.

Samsung Galaxy S IV shows up on Expansys

Just last night, EVLeaks dropped some renders of the Galaxy S IV on Twitter, giving us a glimpse at what the new smartphone may look like when its eventually unveiled on March 14. However, it looks like those renders actually came from the device’s landing page on Expansys, an online electronics retailer. Furthermore, the tweet from EVLeaks has since been deleted. UPDATE: Expansys has since made clear that these renders come from their web designer and were not meant to be seen as actual images of the device – so cool your jets!

Screen Shot 2013-03-05 at 9.07.13 AM

The landing page goes over some of the more important features of the Galaxy S IV, including that eye-tracking technology that we also heard about yesterday, called “Eye Scroll” and “Eye Pause.” While we know what Eye Scroll will do, Eye Pause was more of a mystery. However, according to the listing, Eye Pause “ensures you never have to pause your videos again if you have to glance away from your phone.” The Galaxy S IV will automatically pause videos if you look away from the screen.

Other than that, specifications look to be right on the money from what we’ve been hearing in the past. The new smartphone will come with a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED display protected with Gorilla Glass 3, as well as a quad-core Exynos 5 processor clocked at 1.7GHz, although the landing page mentions an 8-core chip with two quad-core CPUs. However, it’s rumored that the US version of the device will get a Snapdragon 600 clocked at 1.5GHz, but we’ll ultimately have to wait and see what Samsung decides to do.

The smartphone is also listed to have 2GB of RAM, and will come in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB flavors, with the option of inserting a microSD card that stores up to 64GB, making the total amount of storage a possible 128GB. There will also be a 13MP rear camera capable of shooting 1080p video at 60fps, along with a 2MP front-facer capable of recording 720p video at 30fps. The device will also come packing with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with a 2,500mAh battery to power the show. However, it’s important to take these specs with a grain of salt, as Expansys notes that these details could change.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag screenshots leak

It’s been quite the week for Ubisoft, who finally confirmed Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag last week and announced some more details earlier this morning, but the announcements ultimately got away from the developer, as information was being leaked left and right. However, even after most of the details have finally become official, more info about the game is still being leaked, including these screenshots.

AC45

These leaked screenshots give you more of a glimpse inside the new game, so if you’re were slightly disappointed by the teaser trailer, which consisted of all cutscenes and no actual gameplay, these screenshots may quench your Assassin’s Creed thirst. While the screenshots don’t feature actual gameplay footage, they offer some details that we haven’t heard before.

AC44

Specifically, we see that whales may be a focal point in the game, according to several previews which mention the ability to harpoon the creatures. We also get a look at some of the scenery in the game, including the forest and the villages. Plus, it looks like waters won’t be calm at all in the game, according to the screenshot of the two ships.

Overall, though, the style and the feel of the game doesn’t appear to get away from the traditional Assassin’s Creed style that we’ve known and loved throughout the past three installments of the series, but since there’s a new protagonist with a new time period and setting, it’ll be interesting to see how the game plays out.

Nokia Lumia 928 possibly seen in Verizon’s system, spoils few surprises

Nokia Lumia 928 possibly seen in Verizon's system, doesn't reveal much more

We know that Verizon is adding at least one more Nokia Lumia to its stable in the near future. However, there’s been little in tangible evidence to suggest just what’s coming to the carrier’s Windows Phone line. A purported leak to Phone Arena from Verizon’s internal product listings could help fill in that picture. It mentions a Lumia 928, and not much else — but Nokia’s naming customs immediately suggest that this will be Big Red’s rumored variant of the Lumia 920, which is currently limited to AT&T in the US. The device isn’t necessarily connected to the RM-860 we saw at the FCC, although it does support murmurs that Verizon wants at least some kind of improvement over the strictly middling Lumia 822. If the 928 is real, we’re mostly left wondering whether or not it will come quickly enough to remain relevant.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag reportedly launching October 29

Just yesterday Ubisoft officially announced the next installment in the Assassin’s Creed series, but details were quite scarce; we merely got a look at the box art and that was it. However, a screen capture of a landing page on Ubisoft’s website (which has since been taken down), says that Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be launching on October 29 on “next-gen consoles.”

assassins_creed_iv_black_flag_page

The game has already been confirmed for the PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U, so we should now see it arrive for the PlayStation 4 and the rumored Xbox 720. Of course, this isn’t too surprising, as the release date for the game will hit around the same time that the next-gen consoles should launch. However, the screen capture suggest that the game will be releasing on October 29 for next-gen consoles, suggesting that the PS4 and Xbox 720 will be out by then.

The landing page where the release date was leaked is now replaced by a countdown for the Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flagworld premiere trailer,” which is set to launch in four days and 12 hours from the time of this writing. At that point, we should know more details about the upcoming installment.

The leaked screenshot also means that pre-orders will be available for the game, and those who pre-order the title will receive a collectible Todd McFarlane poster, a cartoonist who used to draw Spider-Man comics for Marvel. Since the release date was pulled and replaced with the trailer, it seems like Ubisoft will announce the release date for the game early next week when the trailer launches. Stay tuned!

Microsoft facing EU browser fine by end of March claim insiders

Microsoft faces a potentially huge fine from the European Union over its PC browser choice goof last year, with insiders claiming the penalty will be imposed before the end of March. “The Commission is planning to fine Microsoft before the Easter break” a source familiar with the investigation told Reuters; though the exact amount Microsoft faces in penalties is unknown, there are whispers that it will be considerable since this will be the second time the company has not complied with the EU.

Microsoft_Choice_Screen_28m

Microsoft fell foul of “a technical error” which meant that some Windows PCs failed to show the browser selection screen the company had agreed to install on new computers, after complaints that preloading Internet Explorer as the default app amounted to anti-competitive behavior. All went well, until a glitch in the system meant 28m PCs failed to show the screen, a problem which went unnoticed for more than a year.

The EU warned Microsoft it would be taking action back in October 2012, and at the time the maximum fine that could be levied was totaled up as in the region of $7.4bn. That’s not necessarily going to be the final amount, but the number could easily dwarf the not-inconsiderable $2.1bn Microsoft has already paid in various antitrustpenalties.

An EU spokesperson declined to comment on the rumors. Microsoft is also yet to comment on the possibility of a March punishment, though the company did give a statement late last year regarding the gaffe.

“We take this matter very seriously and moved quickly to address this problem as soon as we became aware of it. Although this was the result of a technical error, we take responsibility for what happened, and we are strengthening our internal procedures to help ensure something like this cannot happen again. We sincerely apologize for this mistake and will continue to cooperate fully with the Commission” Microsoft

Microsoft’s board has already spanked Steve Ballmer, metaphorically speaking, with a bonus cut last year, justified in part by the antitrust issue. Whether the company’s executives will face further censure will likely depend on the amount of the new fine.

Huawei Ascend G710 reportedly spied touting a 5-inch, 720p screen

Huawei Ascend G710 reportedly spied, may tout a 5inch, 720p screen

Just because Huawei has already launched a small torrent of smartphones two months into 2013 doesn’t mean the company is taking a vacation anytime soon. Evleaks has spotted what’s purported to be the Ascend G710, a not-quite-high-end smartphone that would sit just below the Ascend D2. While it would preserve the 5-inch screen and 1.5GHz quad-core processor, it would dip to a 720p resolution. There’s hints that it may be more a step sideways, however, through some less performance-minded changes: the G710 would have a premium-looking metal (or metal-effect) back, free up screen real estate with capacitive navigation buttons and talk to both CDMA and GSM networks. When the camera, storage and the all-important launch plans are still missing, though, there’s a long way to go before we know where this latest Ascend might sit in Huawei’s catalog.
