Samsung Signs Cross-Licensing Deal With Ericsson

samsung-logoBack in 2012, Ericsson filed a lawsuit against Samsung claiming patent infringement. This lawsuit was then followed up by a request for an import ban against Samsung’s products, adding more legal trouble for Samsung who was at that time battling against Apple as well. While Apple and Samsung have yet to work out their differences, it looks like Samsung and Ericsson have as the South Korean tech giant has announced that they have signed a cross-licensing deal with Ericsson  although there is no word on how long this cross-licensing deal will last for. Google And Samsung Sign Cross-Licensing Deal With Each Other For Next 10 Years

google-logo-2011-10-25It used to be back in the day that companies out compete against one another simply based on the merits of their products/services, but it seems that thanks to patents being used a weapon, companies are suing each other left and right to prevent their rivals from getting an edge over them, or at least making things really difficult for them. Well the good news is that it looks like a legal battle between Samsung and Google will not be happening anytime soon as both companies have revealed that they have signed a long-term cross-licensing deal with one another that is expected to cover patents that have already been filed, and future patents, for the next 10 years.

The specifics of the deal were not shared with the public, apart from its announcement, although both companies did state that the deal was mutually beneficial. In fact Samsung seemed to take a pot shot at Apple, according to a statement made by Seungho Ahn, the head of Samsung’s Intellectual Property Center, where he was quoted as saying, ”Samsung and Google are showing the rest of the industry that there is more to gain from cooperating than engaging in unnecessary patent disputes.” Both Apple and Samsung are expected to meet up for talks come February, which if not successful, will see both companies back in the courtrooms shortly after.

US Cable Companies Sue The Rockstar Patent Consortium

US Cable Companies Sue The Rockstar Patent ConsortiumFor those unfamiliar with the Rockstar patent consortium, they are basically a group of tech companies that have joined forces to buy Nortel’s patents from a while ago. The companies that are part of the consortium include big names such as Apple, Microsoft, and Sony, just to name a few. Back in December, Google filed a complaint against the consortium, basically alleging that the consortium are a bunch of bullies who have come together to harass other tech companies, such as Google themselves, and it looks like Google is not alone in feeling that.

In yet another lawsuit filed against the consortium, it seems that this time several US cable companies have come together and decided that the consortium’s plans to break up into smaller shell companies is just not fair. Apparently the plan was for the consortium to divide themselves up into smaller shell companies, with each shell company holding a patent needed by the cable companies. From there it is presumed that the shell companies will approach the cable companies and ask them to license the patents in question or risk getting sued for obscene amounts of money.

It is unclear how the lawsuit will proceed and what the Rockstar consortium will do in response to the lawsuit, but for those interested in taking a look at the lawsuit in its entirety, click here for the details.

Judge Rules That Samsung Infringed On Apple’s Patent In Her Summary Judgement

Judge Rules That Samsung Infringed On Apples Patent In Her Summary JudgementIt looks like Samsung can’t seem to catch a break in the courts. While they might have had some success in courts in different parts of the world, over in the US the South Korean company just can’t seem to catch a break. In a summary judgement issued ahead of the patent infringement trial between Apple and Samsung, Judge Lucy Koh (the same judge who presided over the landmark Apple vs Samsung jury trial) ruled that the Samsung devices in question did infringe upon Apple’s US patent which covers autocorrect functionality.

At the same time, Judge Lucy Koh also invalidated one of Samsung’s patents-in-suit, bringing Samsung’s complaint of patent infringements down to four. The patent in question covered the synchronization of multimedia across multiple devices. The trial between Apple and Samsung is expected to take place on the 31st of March, although prior to that both Apple and Samsung are expected to meet up and conduct settlement talks in which if successful, a trial could be avoided completely. However as previously reported, Apple’s insistence on an anti-cloning provision in the settlement talks would most likely be a deal-breaker for Samsung who might basically see it as an admission of guilt, but who knows, perhaps both companies can come to some of agreement, but check back with us at a later date to see how the talks work themselves out.
