A Smartphone Kill Switch Could Potentially Save Americans Over $2bn A YearThere are certain security features that has the potential to turn away your average smartphone thief. Biometric security and features like Activation Lock are some of them, but the potential to remotely kill a smartphone would probably help deter smartphone theft even further, which is why it is not surprising that law enforcement officials are pushing for such a feature to be included in smartphones shipped and sold in the US.

Carriers have naturally resisted implementing such features because when a phone is stolen, customers will have no choice but to fork out a new one, or at least pay for a higher insurance coverage plan that will cover scenarios like phones being stolen. This is all revenue for carriers and by reducing smartphone theft, it would reduce the need for replacement phones and insurance as well. (more…)

    Website Shames Drivers Who Text While DrivingTexting while driving is a big no-no and we’re sure that despite most of us agreeing with that statement, there are still plenty of us who are guilty of doing so. There have been many initiatives in the past attempting to stop texting while driving, but a new initiative hopes to put an end to that nasty habit by shaming drivers into stopping.

    This is according to a website called TWITspotting which basically posts photos taken by others of people who are texting behind the wheel. Based on the angles that most of the photos are taken, it would appear that the people taking the photos appear on the bus, so we guess for the most part the photographer isn’t being a hypocrite.     Australian Carrier Warned For Overcharging Customers A$8.9 MillionWe’re sure most of us have at one point or the other experienced bill shock. This could come from your carrier where you might have exceeded your monthly data cap, or made one too many international phone calls. Not to mention the way carriers charge for services, it makes it quite hard to get a handle on some of the rates sometimes.

    Well over in Australia it seems that local carrier, Optus, has been formally warned by the Australian Communications and Media Authority for overcharging 237,500 customers a total of A$8.9 million (roughly $8.2 million after conversion) from July 2011 to September 2012. If we were to average it out, that’s about $32.50 per customer that Optus has overcharged. (more…)
