The Lego Movie Replaced a Bunch of Popular TV Ads With Lego Versions

Why does the UK get all the good ads? As our friends at Gizmodo UK report, The Lego Movie bought out an entire commercial block tonight, showing popular ads from companies that would have gone there—except in Lego. Absolutely brilliant.

The LEGO Movie Poster in LEGO Needs its Own Poster

ToroLUG member DarthNick made this awesome diorama to promote The LEGO Movie. It’s a diorama that includes a replica of the stylized typography of the movie’s title, as seen in one of its posters. DarthNick says that the diorama is currently on display at a movie theater, after which it will be shown off at a LEGO store.

He says the build stressed him out because he was pressed for time and the weight of the title blocks caused him a lot of trouble. In fact, DarthNick admits that he put out the diorama with the crane still tilted. It’s still an awesome piece though!

LEGO should make a limited edition playset of this build. Check out DarthNick’s Flickr page for a high resolution image of the diorama, and vote for him on The LEGO Movie Facebook page to be a fan of the week.

7 Foot-long Halo Ship Made out of LEGO

Some of the LEGO creations that we see just blow my mind. I can’t wrap my head around the many hours of planning and building that it takes to make some of these structures, like this massive build. This is a LEGO model of the Halo UNSC Spirit of Fire colony ship, and it is a whopping 7 feet-long.

How long do you think this beast of bricks took to build? Two weeks? Four months? Try over four years. It was built by Mark Kelso, who got the ship’s specifications from designer Heikki Anttila, who worked on the original 3D modeling for the ship. That is why it looks so impressive and imposing.

And that is why the details are off the charts. He even removed all the LEGO studs to make the ship look more realistic. Four years is a nice chunk of time and I’m sure he is very proud of his creation.

LEGO X-Men X-Mansion Concept: A Home for Gifted Minifigs

Minifigs are often hated and feared by humans because they are different. Also because it hurts when you step on them. True believer Glen Bricker wants to build a haven for these extraordinary toys with his proposal for an official LEGO X-Men X-Mansion, aka Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

Glen’s proposal is for a four level mansion that folds out to reveal its rooms, which includes the famous Danger Room, Cerebro, Professor Xavier’s office, Beast’s laboratory and Storm’s attic garden.

Glen included 45 minifigs in his mockups to make the proposal more appealing, but he knows that the number of minifigs – if any – that will be included in the playset will be far fewer. He knows that LEGO and Marvel will have the final say, but if he had his way he’d include Prof. X, Beast, Shadowcat, Gambit and Mystique and maybe Storm and Cyclops as well. What did Wolverine ever do to you bub?

Team up with the Uncanny Browser and head to LEGO Cuusoo to vote for the proposal. Glen also suggests reaching out to Marvel – either through Facebook, Twitter or sending them an email at officex@marvel.com – to let them know about the proposal.

UNSC Spirit Of Fire Gets The LEGO Treatment

UNSC Spirit Of Fire Gets The LEGO TreatmentThere is just something about LEGO bricks that makes them so enticing to the kid – or adult. After all, we humans have been wired to create and build, why explains why LEGO has not lost its popularity at all. In fact, you could more or less say that the interest in LEGO has increased as folks come up with more and more zany creations, including this LEGO car that features plastic pistons. Halo fans will be pleased to note that what they see above is actually a LEGO recreation of the starship from the game franchise which is known as the UNSC Spirit of Fire.

LEGO Sherlock, BTTF DeLorean and VF-1 Mecha under fan kit consideration

Every so often a Lego build comes along that’s so epic and so amazing that it literally has me drooling over greebles. Mark Kelso’s 7-foot long HALO Lego ship is one such build. The UNSC Spirit of Fire was a colony ship from the game HALO.

Making Prototypes with a 3D Printer & LEGO: faBrickation

3D printing can help you create prototypes or mockups quickly. Or should I say relatively quickly – it can take a 3D printer hours to print even moderately-sized objects. To speed things up, students from the Human-Computer Interaction Group at the Hasso Plattner Institute tested adding LEGO to their workflow.

Researchers Stefanie Mueller, Tobias Mohr, Kerstin Guenther, Johannes Frohnhofen and Patrick Baudisch call their project faBrickation. The idea is to print just the crucial parts of a prototype, then build the rest out of LEGO. To do that, they wrote a program called faBrickator, where they can open 3D models…

…and “Legofy” it at the press of a button.

Then they just mark the parts of the model that will be printed…

…and build the rest with LEGO using instructions generated by faBrickator.

They can also use faBrickator to go back to a 3D model, modify it and then print only the parts that were changed, once again saving time.

The group claims that on average, faBrickation lets them make prototypes nearly two and a half times faster than using 3D printing alone. I wonder if they can make a reverse faBrickation scanner, so laypeople can start making a “3d model” out of LEGO instead of a modeling software, scan that LEGO model then run the resulting model through faBrickation.

LEGO Is Making a Ghostbusters Set!

Can you believe that it has been 30 years this June since the release of Ghostbusters? Nowadays, we can’t imagine a world without them. LEGO likes them too and has agreed to produce video game artist Brent Waller’s LEGO set after it got over 10,000 supporters on LEGO Cuusoo.

    lego ghostbusters 620x697magnify

That is amazing news for LEGO and Ghostbusters fans alike. However, it’s a good news, bad news kind of thing. Only the Ecto-1 and the minifigs are being made for now, not the awesome firehouse HQ.  Also, I’d doubt that the final version will light up like the awesome mockup shown here. Well, you can’t have everything.

At least we will have some kick ass Ghostbusters minifigs. Although Spengler does look a bit like Harry Potter, as others are saying. Still, it’s a win for geeks everywhere.

LEGO Calvin and Hobbes Has Evil Snowmen

Growing up, about the only comics I had anything to do with were Peanuts, The Far Side, and Calvin and Hobbes. I was never really interested in other comic strips or comic books. This slick Calvin and Hobbes LEGO diorama brings back fond memories.

    hobbes 620x337magnify

The LEGO set has Calvin and his tiger on a snowmobile zipping through the ice and snow with evil snowmen trying to get them. One of the snowmen has two heads, another looks like an AT-ST walker from The Empire Strikes Back, and there is one with a pitchfork through its head.

The LEGO creation was made for a store display by brick artist Tyler Sky, also known as Bricksky on Flickr. Hobbes looks a bit worried, but Calvin seems happy enough.
