LG Not Worried About Lenovo’s Acquisition Of Motorola

LG Not Worried About Lenovos Acquisition Of MotorolaAs we’re sure many of you guys have heard by now that Lenovo will be acquiring Motorola Mobility from Google. While Lenovo might not necessarily be a company known for smartphones (more for their computers), they have managed to take acquisitions and successfully turn them into a moneymaker, like what they did with IBM’s ThinkPad lineup of laptops. That being said, will they be able to do the same with Motorola? And more importantly, how do other Android OEMs feel about it? Well it seems that at least one Android OEM doesn’t seem too bothered and it is none other than South Korean tech company, LG.

When asked if LG might be worried with Lenovo acquiring Motorola, Kim Jong Hoon, head of product at LG, was quoted as saying, “There are many talks over Lenovo and Motorola in the media right now and how it affects LG, but internally, we aren’t discussing much about it.” Given that Motorola hasn’t really put many handsets out there lately, save for the Moto X and Moto G, we guess LG is feeling pretty confident. After all the company’s LG G2 from 2013 was considered something of a hit, and the company recently announced its latest handset, the LG G Pro 2, but what do you guys think? Will this Lenovo-Motorola deal be something Android OEMs should be worried about?

LG G3 Could Feature Eye And Fingerprint Recognition

LG G3 Could Feature Eye And Fingerprint RecognitionWith the LG G Pro 2 having been officially launched, we’re sure many are looking forward to LG’s next rumored handset, the LG G3. Unfortunately not much is known about the LG G3 at the moment apart from rumors and speculation, and now thanks to a report from the Korean media, it has been suggested that features such as eye and fingerprint recognition could be part of the LG G3. In terms of eye recognition, that particular rumor is a new one, but in the past we have heard rumors that the LG G3 could sport a fingerprint scanner, and this claim seems to reaffirm it.

It should be noted that this isn’t a rumor per se, but rather it came about when LG officials were asked as to whether eye and fingerprint recognition could be part of the LG G3, in which LG officials said that they are considering all sorts of possibilities which is neither a confirmation nor a denial, so this is something we will have to keep an eye on. The LG G3 trademark was recently filed so at the very least we know that the device is real. Oddly enough a rumor suggests that the handset could be launched on the 17th of May which seems a little too soon given that the LG G Pro 2 is only expected to make its way to US and European markets after April. Either way we’ll be on the lookout for more LG G3 news, so check back with us at a later date to see if there are additional details to be had!

The handset has been announced for the South Korean market and we’re sure that many in the US and other parts of the world are wondering when will the handset see an international release. While we can’t speak for other parts of the world, it seems that over in the US, smartphone customers can look forward to getting their hands on the handset after March. This is according to LG mobile’s head of Korea sales, Cho Sung Ha, who was quoted as saying (via ZDNet Korea), “Starting in March, we will launch it in Asian countries where demand for large-screen phablets is the highest.”

Cho later added, “We will release the G Pro 2 in regions such as the US and Europe after that.” No specific dates were mentioned so for all we know, it could be launched in April, May, June, and so on, but hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for it. As a quick recap for those who might have missed the announcement, the LG G Pro 2 is the South Korean tech company’s latest handset. LG G Pro 2 Launches In Korea

LG G Pro 2 Launches In KoreaWe knew this was coming, and just like that, the LG G Pro 2 has now become official, without much fanfare. You may remember our review of the initial G Pro smartphone, a direct competitor of the Galaxy Note 2. With it, LG made a notable jump in market share in Korea with that phone and since the LG G2 doesn’t really cover the “large display phone” segment that the G Pro compete in, it was time for an update and LG is happy to oblige with a G Pro 2, which will compete against the Galaxy Note 3 and other big phones.

LG Ramping Up Flexible Display Production

LG Ramping Up Flexible Display Production

the G Flex with the Note 2 in the background

In terms of smartphones with flexible displays, Samsung and LG are both competing against one another. Both companies have released phones with curved displays in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Round and the LG G Flex and if the rumors are anything to go by, LG could also be the company responsible of providing curved displays to Apple for use in the Cupertino’s rumored iWatch device (along with battery technology too, apparently). That being said, whatever LG has planned, it seems that the South Korean tech company will be ramping up production of flexible displays in anticipation of the smartwatch market.

This is according to Han Sang Beom, CEO of LG Group’s display making arm, who told the Korean media that the company will be increasing investments on small-sized panels to increase production capacity. According to Han, “There are many requests for plastic OLED from our smartphone (making) clients and the interest in wearable devices are pretty high.” He also states, “We will finalize our plan within the first half after observing the market situation (to decide on) substrate size and total production capacity.” We’re not sure if LG’s plans to ramp up production have anything to do with Apple’s iWatch or their own products, but either way it looks like the company is anticipating that flexible displays will be in demand for 2014.

LG Earbuds Which Tracks The Heart Rate Hits The FCC

LG Earbuds Which Tracks The Heart Rate Hits The FCCAt CES last month, the folks over at LG did mention about the Lifeband fitness wearable in addition to a pair of heart-rate sensing earphones, but somehow there was no specific mention as to when these would actually appear over in stores. Hence, it is with a sigh of relief that the FCC has dropped a clue that the heart-rate sensing earphones should hit the market in due time, where these Bluetooth-enabled earphones have gotten the nod of approval from the FCC, making them suitable for a commercial release. As with most devices that have been approved by the FCC in the past, it would also mean one thing – a final release is not too far away, too.
