LG purchased webOS when smartphones and tablets powered by it didn’t achieve much commercial success. HP even launched a fire sale of its webOS tablet just to get rid of the inventory that would have otherwise gathered dust in warehouses. The Korean manufacturer has confirmed that it is going to unveil a webOS powered gadget very soon. LG is going to unveil its webOS smart TV at the Consumer Electronics Show 2014 next month and rumor has it that the operating system is going to retain its unique “cards” interface.
The cards interface allowed for effective multitasking, and we’ve seen it inspire multitasking interfaces in Android and iOS. The Wall Street Journal has heard from an anonymous source that LG webOS TV is going to retain the cards interface. Not much has been revealed about this TV, it is believed to be powered by a 2.2GHz dualcore processor coupled with 1.5GB of RAM. While the company hasn’t confirmed anything about the interface, it has mentioned in the past that it was revamping the interface, and that it would be a “game changer.” The company has already confirmed that it will finally unveil this TV at CES 2014, so its only a matter of days before we finally know what the revamped webOS looks like.

This year we saw the trend of fingerprint scanners in smartphones pick up. It was rumored for months that the iPhone 5s would come with a fingerprint scanner, and it did. Then the HTC One Max was unveiled, which also had a similar scanner, albeit on the back. Even Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 was rumored to have it, but that didn’t pan out. Rumor has it that a number of flagship smartphones in 2014 will come with fingerprint scanner and the folks at Digitimes are hearing from “industry sources” that both HTC and LG are planning to use sapphire for home buttons of 2014 flagship devices.
Apparently the HTC One 2 and the LG G3 will come with sapphire home buttons, thus allowing both manufacturers to bundle fingerprint scanners. It has already been rumored that LG’s 2014 flagship is going to have the scanner. HTC already released one device touting said scanner this year, it seems likely that the company will introduce it into next year’s flagship as well. Both smartphones, the HTC One 2 and the LG G3, are expected to be launched earlier than originally planned in 2014. So far the companies haven’t confirmed anything about their smartphone plans for next year, perhaps things might be a bit more clear around the time when the Mobile World Congress is about to kick off.

LG announced today in Korea that its popular “Knock” feature, which was initially known as KnockON, is going to be standard in all key mobile devices in the future. The company also revealed that its L Series II smartphones are going to receive this feature sometime next month. The Knock feature debuted with LG G2, it allows users to turn the smartphone on and off by simply knocking twice on the display. Its a handy feature on the G2, considering the fact that its power button is located on the back. Knock for L Series II users will be rolled out through a global maintenance update in January, 2014.
The Korean manufacturer also introduced this feature in its G Pad 8.3 tablet. Its curved smartphone, the G Flex, also came with this feature because it too has the power button on the back. The company says that customer response to this feature was so positive that they made a version of Knock for the L Series II. Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics’ Mobile Communications Company, said that “Knock is distinctively an LG UX,” and that the company’s engineers found a way to improve the home button by turning the entire screen into one.

LG today launched its new Pocket Photo 2.0 “smart mobile printer,” touted as an excellent travel companion, this nifty little printer can connect through NFC and Bluetooth with Android and iOS mobile devices and let users print custom 5.1 x 7.6cm photos. The new LG Pocket Photo is 4mm thinner than its predecessor but it doesn’t compromise on performance. In fact, the new model offers more prints per charge, 30 to be precise, with each printed picture being rendered at 313 dpi or dots-per-inch. To begin printing, all users have to do is download the free Pocket Photo editing app and connect their smartphone or tablet with it.
The app has been updated as well, it features an expanded range of customization options. There is a new set of filter effects and a clever frame augmentation feature. Users will also be able to embed QR codes into photos printed through the LG Pocket Photo. To print photos, the printer employs ZINK technology, which eliminates the need for ink cartridges, ribbons or toner. The technology uses heat to fire up the necessary color-forming chemistry, which is already imbedded in each sheet of paper. The new LG Pocket Photo Printer will be available in pink, jewel white and lime yellow, it is already available for purchase in China whereas global roll out is scheduled in 2014. The Korean company will be showcasing this gadget at the Consumer Electronics Show 2014 next month.

The LG G2 is LG’s flagship smartphone of 2013 and while the handset is pretty decently specced, with a great display and awesome camera, it seems that it isn’t quite getting the love it should, at least according to reports. If the reports are to be believed, it seems that LG has only managed to sell 2 million LG G2 units to date, which is only a fraction of what they had originally intended to sell for 2013. LG had initially planned to sell 10 million units of the LG G2 but according to a report from DigiTimes, the company has only managed a fifth of those sales to date, and the reason isn’t because it’s a bad phone, but rather because it is due to the Nexus 5.
The Nexus 5 is Google’s latest Nexus device which is based on specs somewhat similar to the LG G2. It isn’t as powerful as the LG G2 or sport the same camera, but it is very decent, not to mention its asking price makes it a very attractive alternative to the LG G2 or any other smartphone available in the market today. So far apart from camera issues, the Nexus 5 has been met with generally positive reviews, giving customers little reason to go with the LG G2 unless the camera was their priority. In any case if the rumors are to be believed, LG could be working on a successor to the G2 in the form of the G3 which could debut as early as MWC 2014.

LG G3 Fingerprint Scanner Rumored
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt has only been a couple of months since LG launched its 2013 flagship smartphone, the LG G2. The device has received rave reviews, its design, specifications and superb camera performance have all been praised. While it may seem too soon for rumors about a successor to start circulating, the first LG G3 rumors have already started making the rounds. The latest rumor coming in from Korea claims that LG G3 will have a fingerprint scanner much like the iPhone 5S and the HTC One Max.
An Anonymous LG official is cited in the local media report as saying that the company recently made the decision to include a fingerprint scanner in the upcoming G3 smartphone, and that it is “conducting a series of tests for the product.” It is also claimed that this smartphone will be designed to sync with the Korean manufacturer’s G-Arch smartwatch and its upcoming fitness wristband. Other rumored specifications of the G3 include a 2,560×1,440 pixel resolution display, a 16 megapixel rear camera and an octacore processor made by LG. It hasn’t been said when LG intends to release this device, but it is believed that the launch might take place earlier than anticipated due to “disappointing” sales of the LG G2. Perhaps the launch might take place at the Mobile World Congress 2014 in February, but for now, take all of this with a grain of salt.
