IRL: Another look at the LG G2

It’s been just about 10 months since an LG device has showed up in “IRL.” That was back in January, when our Canadian editor Jon Fingas took the Optimus G for a spin on Rogers. Now he’s back to test the G2, though he’s still waxing a bit sentimental about the ol’ G. So how does it stack up? Let’s see.

LG G Flex For AT&T And T-Mobile Pass Through The FCC

LG G Flex For AT&T And T Mobile Pass Through The FCCIt wasn’t too long ago that the LG G Flex was announced and while we were a bit worried that the device might be limited to a South Korean release, as is with the case of the Samsung Galaxy Round, it turns out that the handset could be making its way onto major US carriers, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Well the good news is that the rumor turned out to be true, at least according to a recent FCC filing which shows the device being compatible with both AT&T and T-Mobile’s LTE network. The rumor claims that a Sprint version should be arriving as well, but so far we have not seen Sprint’s version hit the FCC yet, so perhaps it will at a later date.

However for those who don’t want to wait for any of the major carriers to make the official announcement, or would rather not be tied to a contract, you’re in luck because the handset has also gone on sale in the US, at least on Negri Electronics’ website where you can pre-order the handset unlocked for $1,100, although these appear to be imported units, so compatibility with US networks are not necessarily a guarantee. In any case we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information, but who’s planning on picking up an LG G Flex upon its release?

Google’s 2013 Nexus 10 to source LG, leaked pics suggest

Google’s 2013 reboot of its Nexus 10 tablet will be manufactured by LG and sell for £299 ($482), if these leaked pics are to be believed. They were apparently leaked by Spanish broadband and telecom provider Telefonica, as the “Property of Telefonica” watermark on the second pic would indicate. Together the allegedly individually sourced pics […]

Purported Nexus 10 2013 Images Leaked

Google has already released a new Nexus tablet and smartphone this year, the Nexus 7 2013 and Nexus 5 to be precise, it is yet to release an updated Nexus 10 tablet. The company hasn’t confirmed anything as yet about this tablet, so it is not known for sure at this point in time if and when the Nexus 10 2013 is finally going to be unveiled. However, two purported images of the tablet have leaked online. There’s no way to determine their authenticity at this point in time, so its best to view these images with a pinch of salt.

LG G Flex appears on the FCC with AT&T-friendly LTE

LG G Flex appears on the FCC with AT&Tfriendly LTE

Those on our side of the pond who’ve been lusting after LG’s intriguingly flexible handset might’ve seethed with jealousy after finding out it’s heading to Asia and Europe later this year. Thankfully, the US will get its very own version of the LG G Flex as well, if this FCC filing is any indication. The document reveals an LG D959 — the G Flex’s model number — with LTE band 17, a sure sign that the phone is headed to the Ma Bell network. Other tidbits gleaned from the listing suggest that the G Flex also has quad-band GSM support, 802.11a/ac/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and GPS, most of which we already knew. At last, it seems that we’ll be that much closer to seeing how LG’s bendy smartphone compares to its curvy competitor.

Update: It appears the FCC document also listed LTE Band 4 (AWS), which means it might head to T-Mobile as well.

LG Reportedly Wanted Nexus 5 To Be Called Nexus G

LG Reportedly Wanted Nexus 5 To Be Called Nexus G

For the past few years, Google hasn’t highlighted manufacturers of its Nexus devices in their monikers. Take the Nexus S for example which came out in 2010, it was manufactured by Samsung and the “S” was an obvious reference to the manufacturer’s Galaxy S line. Now, even in the Play Store, device monikers don’t hint at their makers, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and the Nexus 5 are fine examples. Google may have its own reasons of doing this, but apparently LG wanted it shift from this tradition. Chosun libo, a major newspaper based in South Korea, claims that LG wanted that the Nexus 5 be called the Nexus G, an obvious reference to its “G” line of devices.

LG changed its own naming policy for its premium devices this year, dropping the “Optimus” moniker in favour of the alphabet G. Since then, it has unveiled devices like the LG G2, G Pad and the G Flex. Perhaps the company might have thought that since Google has previously allowed Samsung to brand Nexus devices, the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S to be precise, perhaps it might extend the same courtesy to it. The newspaper claims that while LG did discuss the idea with Google, the company denied and went ahead with the Nexus 5. The rest, as they say, is history.

Nexus G not going to happen – but not for lack of trying

It’s become apparent today that the teams working with Google for the last couple of Nexus devices – the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 – may very well have wanted the device(s) to be called something else entirely. While back before the Nexus 4 was revealed – all the way back in 2012 – when […]

LG Infographic Shows How Americans Use Their Smartphones

LG Infographic Shows How Americans Use Their SmartphonesWe all use our phones differently and we all have times and places where we might feel it would be inappropriate to use our phones, but given how dependent we are these days on our devices, thanks to social media and the ability to be constantly connected to all sorts of things, can we really be blamed? Well LG has recently released an infographic in which it reveals how Americans use their smartphones. The survey was conducted and saw 1,152 Americans aged 18 or older participating in it.

According to James Fishler, LG USA’s senior VP of marketing, “Smartphones have quickly become the modern day tool that most of us just can’t live without. With major advances in mobile technology in recent years, smartphones have gone beyond their original intent as a primary communication tool to become true life companions for everything from social situations to our most personal moments.” The infographic is rather interesting as it shows stats such as how 48% of those surveyed have no qualms about using it in a place of worship, and that a staggering 77% would use it in while in bed with another person.

It was also found that 36% used their phones to take “selfies” to see how they look like, while 33% have used it to pretend to look busy while alone at a bar or restaurant, and thankfully there are those who are more socially aware as only 28% have used their phones whilst on a date. You can check out the rest of the stats above, but what do you guys think?

LG G Flex Self-Healing Powers Demonstrated On Video

One of the unique features of the LG G Flex is not only its curved display, but the fact that LG has advertised that the phone comes with self-healing powers in which scratches made to the back of the phone will be able to heal itself and magically disappear, making it look as though your phone is brand new. While the technology behind this “magic” remains unknown for now, LG did clarify that this will only work with light scratches that might occur on a day-to-day basis, such as scratching against coins or keys in your pocket, as opposed to deep scratches that might be the result of a drop on the pavement.

In any case we initially had no idea of what to expect, especially since LG reps did not actually allow anyone to try scratching the device during their hands-on preview, but they have since released a video that shows us how the self-healing powers of the phone might work. The video shows the phone being scratched repeatedly and after about 2 minutes of the scratching stopped, you can see that the back of the phone has returned to normal. How long it takes for it to heal will really depend on the severity of the scratch, but it’s still pretty cool anyway. If you have a minute or so to spare, you might want to check it out in the video above.

White LG G2 Spotted, Targets Verizon

White LG G2 Spotted, Targets VerizonThe LG G2 has been out for some time already, and Verizon customers are able to pick up one of these handsets any time that they like, although they will only be able to choose from one color – that would be black. However, it does seem that a recent leak could point to something else that might appeal to those who want their smartphones to arrive in a color other than boring black. On the Twitter page over at @evleaks, there was a photo posted up which does seem to resemble that of a white LG G2 handset complete with a Verizon Wireless logo that has been stamped on the back.

So far, the folks over at Verizon has not given away any indication in particular that they will start to sell the white version of the LG G2 anytime soon, but I suppose that might change in the near future if the leaked image from serial leaksters @evleaks happen to turn out to be true. Would you pick up a white version of the LG G2 just for the sake of it looking different from the current model in terms of its color? One thing’s for sure, the LG G2, regardless of which color it comes in, is a pretty fly and highly functional smartphone.
