Nexus 5 Gets Bluetooth Certification Ahead Of Rumored Oct. 15 Launch Date

    nexus5-leak

Google’s next Nexus Android reference smartphone is likely just around the corner, and today the Bluetooth SIG published a certification of a device that matches its model identification code. The “LG-D821″ is already essentially confirmed as the new Nexus 5, and its approval today by the Bluetooth SIG means that it’s probably on track for a rumored launch early next week.

Reports from CNET UK suggest we’ll see the Nexus 5 make its official debut on October 15, and that the next version of Android, version 4.4 or ‘KitKat,’ will arrive on the same day. KitKat is so-named thanks to a cross-promotional effort between Google and Nestlé, but it’s been rumored to be a relatively minor update, and TechCrunch has heard separately from a well-placed source that indeed, KitKat will be mostly business as usual compared to version 4.3, with the next update down the line offering up much more substantial changes.

Google’s Nexus 5 is said to have a 4.95-inch 1080p display, along with a Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.2 megapixel front shooter, LTE support and Bluetooth 4.0. It’s all powered by a 2300mAH battery, which is just slightly more capacious than the 2100mAH battery on the current Nexus 4. It’s also powering a much more powerful device, so it’ll be interesting to see how that affects what kind of mileage you get on a single charge.

If it’s priced right, a new LTE-capable Nexus in time for the holidays could be a very good option for buyers looking to get a strong smartphone for relatively little money upfront. Last year, supply was very constrained early on, however, so if you’re interested in one, it’s probably a good idea to be ready to order when they do get made official.

    LG G Pro Lite Announced

LG G Pro Lite AnnouncedIt does seem as though LG has taken a page out of Samsung’s playbook – that is, by introducing a smartphone with a large display without having it break the bank in terms of budget. Hence, LG is proud to announce the LG G Pro Lite, where it will arrive with a 5.5” IPS display as well as special user interface features. To make sure that the large display is adequately powered, LG has also thrown in a generous 3,140mAh battery into the LG G Pro Lite, where it will be accompanied by other hardware features such as an embedded Stylus Pen, stereo speakers and Dual SIM support with a dedicated Hot Key.

The LG G Pro Lite was also designed in such a way where it will come with an ultra-narrow bezel so that you get to enjoy an incredible edge-to-edge viewing experience, while the slim design itself can be best described to deliver an optimal one-handed grip. Convenient user interface features are also found here, just like what you can find on LG’s other premium G Series smartphones. There is no word on pricing, but the LG G Pro Lite will be available in Latin America, where that will be followed by markets in Asia, Russia, China, India and the Middle East.

Some of the key specifications include a dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal memory that can be expanded via a microSD memory card slot, an 8-megapixel shooter at the back with a 1.3-megapixel camera in front, and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean in tow. [Press Release]

LG has gone official with the new LG G Pro Lite smartphone. The smartphone features a 5.5-inch screenwith a resolution of 960 x 540, and it has some of the same hardware found in the LG Optimus G Pro. We reviewed the LG Optimus G Pro in May. One of the key features is the […]

Samsung’s Galaxy Round is gimmicky not geekery

I love odd gadgets and weird technology. I like manufacturers that think at right-angles when it comes to designs and functionality. Yet Samsung’s newly announced Galaxy Round, the Android smartphone with a curved AMOLED display like a techie taco, for all its new screen technology, leaves me cold. “Samsung’s Galaxy Round is the epitome of […]

LG Display to mass produce flexible OLED panel for smartphones soon

lg-flexible-oledThe folks over at LG Display seem to be on to a new groove, where they have just announced that they will begin to mass produce the first flexible OLED panel in the world, targeting the smartphone segment, of course. This is a state-of-the-art display panel which will represent yet another milestone that will continue in the company’s commercial footsteps where they too, were the first to introduce the first 55-inch OLED TV display in the world sometime earlier this year. LG Display has placed a positive spin on the future of the flexible display market, where they do hope that this particular market segment will be able to grow quickly since this technology is tipped to expand even further into a range of other applications including displays, tablets and wearable devices.

With this move, it does seem as though LG Display intends to gain an early lead in the flexible display market, and we cannot wait to see what other new products will they reveal next year that will arrive with enhanced performance as well as differentiated designs. Just how does LG Display’s flexible OLED panel become possible? Well, it has been built on plastic substrates instead of relying on the traditional material, which is glass. Through the application of film-type encapsulation technology as well as attaching the protection film to the back of the panel, LG Display has ensured that the panel ends up as bendable and unbreakable. Now that is definitely some food for thought, don’t you think so?

The new display will vertically concave from top to bottom where it carries a radius of 700mm, which would open up a world of design innovations in the smartphone market. Not only that, it will also measure a mere 0.44mm thin, which would make this particular offering from LG Display as the world’s slimmest flexible OLED panel in its class, too. Apart from that, there is another feather in its cap, which would mean it is the world’s lightest as it tips the sclaes at just 7.2 grams even when it features a 6″ display. I guess this advancement from the folks over at LG Display can only mean one thing – the advent of flexible display smartphones are just on the horizon, and we cannot wait to see what the future holds.

LG working on flexible, non-rectangular batteries for bendable electronics

The smartphone and electronics world is steadily marching towards new form factors for devices that are bendable and flexible rather than the rigid smartphones and tablets we know today. LG Display announced a big breakthrough that will help usher in flexible electronics with a bendable smartphone display that entered mass production recently. LG is also […]

Google Nexus 5 leak tips two different battery sizes

A lot of information has turned up in the form of leaks over the last few days about the Google LG Nexus 5 smartphone. The service manual for the smartphone leaked earlier this week spilling most of the hardware details. Yesterday another leak showed us what the inside of the smartphone would look like. A […]

LG Chem Announces Production Of Curved Batteries

LG Chem Announces Production Of Curved BatteriesRecently LG Display announced that they would be mass producing flexible OLED displays for smartphones, and now it looks like another LG division has something to boast as LG Chem has announced that they will begin the production of curved batteries, which presumably will allow smartphone manufacturers, such as themselves, to design and manufacturer uniquely designed smartphones. These batteries will use LG’s patented “Stack and Folding” technology that will be able to be used to power smartphones, watches, or even glasses (is LG hinting at a Google Glass competitor?).

One of the misconceptions of flexible displays is that we can look forward to devices that can be folded in half or rolled up and put into our pockets. However while the display itself can be bent or folded, the components within the phone all need to be of similar flexibility, which means that flexible displays will only add a degree of curvature to phones, or perhaps allow for a wrapped-around design. However with LG announcing curved batteries, it’s one step closer to fully flexible and bendable smartphones. It will be interesting to see which device LG will choose to debut their new technology with and we can’t wait to see how other smartphone manufacturers, namely Apple, HTC, Sony, and Motorola, will respond.
