Kyocera piezoelectric film speaker delivers 180-degree sound to thin TVs and tablets (update: live photos)

Kyocera piezoelectric film speaker delivers 180degree sound to thin TVs and tablets update live photos

The thinner our devices become, the less room there is for speakers and other thicker components. Kyocera has a solution, however: it just modified its Smart Sonic Receiver conduction technology for use with conventional, over-the-air audio. The company’s new Smart Sonic Sound device still relies on a piezoelectric actuator, but vibrates against a film to generate as much volume as a regular speaker in a far thinner (under 1.5mm thick) design. The new speaker might even sound better than its traditional counterparts. It delivers full volume and quality in a 180-degree listening arc, and it’s responsive enough to recreate very subtle noises. Smart Sonic Sound is already shipping in LG’s 55-inch curved OLED TV, and Kyocera expects it to reach laptops, tablets and other devices where interior space is valuable.

Update: Our colleagues at Engadget Japanese have posted their first-hand look at Kyocera’s speaker technology, complete with a gallery of live photos; we’ve posted two of them here.

LG 4K TV Prices Slashed

LG 4K TV Prices Slashed

Many companies unveiled their 4K TVs earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show. However, 4K TVs haven’t gained much traction. Its not because the products are bad or the technology is not up to the market, its actually the complete opposite of that. The problem is that these TVs come with price tags that run into thousands of dollars, not everyone can afford to spend that much on a television. We reported a couple of days ago that both Sony and Samsung have cut prices on their 4K TVs, today LG has followed suit.

LG confirmed that it is slashing the prices of it’s 55 and 65 inch 4K TVs. The new prices go in effect on September 1st. These models are receiving a $1000 and $1500 price cut, respectively. The new price of LG 55LA9700 55 inch 4K TV is now $4,999 while the LG 65LA9700 65 inch 4K TV costs $6,499. Vice President of corporate communications at LG, John Taylor, said that the company has made the price cut to “keep LG Ultra HDTVs competitive in the marketplace.” Even with the price cuts in place, 4K TVs are still out of many customers’ price range, but hey, you get what you pay for. If you’ve been holding out on buying a new 4K TV, this might be a good time to go ahead with the purchase.

LG partners with Cognitive Networks to make Smart TVs smarter and more interactive

LG parnters with Cognitive Networks to make Smart TVs smarter and more interactive

There’s a problem with Smart TVs — they really aren’t all that smart. While having WiFi-equipped sets that can run apps and stream content from the web might make them seem smart, TV’s don’t actually know what content is onscreen when they’re showing, you know, regular broadcast television. (Which is still what those TVs are most used for.) Cognitive Networks, however, has figured out how to make those televisions aware of what’s happening onscreen, and LG is the first manufacturer to leverage the technology with its LivePlus service. LivePlus was first revealed at the launch of Showtime’s Sho Sync app last week, but the Cognitive Networks’ technology powering LG’s platform can do so much more than just display character backgrounds, trivia and other info. To fully appreciate the breadth of possibilities the tech provides, however, it’s important to know how it actually works.

LG Sound Plate To Make IFA 2013 Debut

LG Sound Plate To Make IFA 2013 Debut[IFA 2013] IFA 2013 is just around the corner, and you can be sure that there will be plenty of new devices that will be revealed to the masses then. South Korean giant LG will also be part of the action, and one particular device that has caught our eye would be the LG Sound Plate. It is not something that you can eat right off it, but rather, the LG Sound Plate would be an interesting addition to the fast growing TV sound system category.

The LG Sound Plate would measure a mere 35mm in height, coming in an extremely slim and stylish form factor, where you can opt to slide it under any 32- to 55-inch TV in order to save more space, not to mention it sports a very “safe” design which should make it go down well with a range of interior decoration tastes. Boasting a robust 4.1 channel sound system that will be accompanied by dual built-in subwoofers, the LG Sound Plate is capable of projecting full-bodied audio in multiple directions, resulting in an incredibly immersive auditory experience. Not only that, using a neodymium magnet, it is full well capable of producing powerful audio. There is also Bluetooth support thrown into the mix to deliver easy wireless connectivity with smartphones, tablets and other wireless devices.

Samsung and LG considering an anti-theft “kill-switch” on future devices

New reports suggest Samsung and LG are both considering a ‘kill-switch’ on future devices. This is said to be addressing lost and stolen devices and will apply to both tablets and smartphones. LG G2 soars into the stratosphere highlighting 13-megapixel OIS camera

We’ve seen plenty of smartphones strapped to high-altitude balloons and launched thousands and thousands of feet into the air. LG has recently published a video shot using its new LG G2 full HD resolution smartphone as it soared into the stratosphere attached to a balloon. The video was notable for the high-resolution the G2 offers […]

    Nexus 4 price drops by $100 to $199 for 8GB, $249 for 16GB (update)

The cheapest unlocked stock Android phone you could buy just got even cheaper: Google has dropped the price of the Nexus 4 8GB to $199 (£159) from $299 (£239), and the 16GB model to $249 (£199) from $349 (£279). It’s fast approaching the anniversary date of the latest Google phone, so the timing is about right for the discount. However, we do wonder if this means a replacement is nigh. After all, Google has yet to introduce the next Nexus successor, and we certainly don’t think the Moto X is all the Mountain View company has to offer. Until then, the Nexus 4 is pretty much the best smartphone deal for stock Android lovers who hate carrier contracts. So if you feel like snatching one up, you had best hit the store link below before it sells out yet again.

Update: The Google Play Twitter account just sent out a tweet stating that the 25 percent discount (or more) applies not only in the US, but also Australia, Canada, Germany, Spain, Korea and the UK. We’ve embedded the tweet after the break.

LG G2 Flies To The Edge Of Space In New Promotional Video

LG G2 Flies To The Edge Of Space In New Promotional Video

LG is spending a lot of time and money on promoting its brand new smartphone, the LG G2. Just yesterday the company released a four minute video which details the device’s exhaustive list of features. LG has now uploaded a new promotional video in which it sends the G2 to the edge of space. The video’s purpose is to show off how the G2′s 13 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization performs. The device has brought back some stunning images from its trip to the edge of space.

The LG team on the ground attaches a G2 to a balloon and let it fly. It first reaches the troposphere and then makes its way to the stratosphere. One can see the edge of space, and the blue halo that surrounds Earth as well as the vast space beyond. It then makes its descent to the ground where LG’s team is waiting for it. The device remains fully functional even after braving sub-zero temperatures. LG has included the raw footage captured by the G2 during its trip in the promotional video. It makes for an interesting watch. The U.S. release date of LG G2 hasn’t been announced as yet, both Verizon and AT&T are rumored to release it on the 12th and 13th of next month respectively.
