LG Enact Android slider keeps Verizon in the QWERTY business

It’s not as if the LG Enact was the last device on the planet to offer a full physical keyboard with Android software – though the most recent entry with Verizon was the BlackBerry Q10. This LG device brings a sliding front panel that reveals a full QWERTY keyboard much in the same way that […]

LG Enact launches on Verizon, keeps the flame alive for QWERTY slider phones

LG Enact launches on Verizon, keeps the QWERTY slider flame alive

Verizon isn’t just releasing its variant of the HTC One today — it also has a treat for fans of the oft-neglected QWERTY slider smartphone. The carrier has just launched the once-rumored LG Enact, which hides a landscape keyboard underneath its 4-inch WVGA screen. As you might gather from the display, though, this device is no flagship. The combination of a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a VGA front camera and 8GB of expandable storage puts the Enact at the low end. What’s more, it’s also stuck on Android 4.1. When LG’s new device costs $20 on contract, however, it’s inexpensive enough that many fans of hardware keys can afford to take a look.

LG Has Big Plans For New Devices In The Future

LG Has Big Plans For New Devices In The FutureEarlier this morning, we did bring you word that LG has drawn up some pretty interesting plans for the future – and this particular future will involve the likes of a smartwatch, a new smartphone which will be powered by Mozilla’s Firefox OS, as well as additional tablets that are all set to join the family gadget line up. Of course, we too, are pleasantly surprised at LG’s move to support Firefox OS, since it would be somewhat akin to Samsung and their Tizen as well as Bada OS devices which happen to be a “third pillar” strategy. On a side note, do you think that Firefox OS will be able to make it big in the long run, or will it forever remain as a niche market?

Having said that, what was revealed by a LG spokesperson in Bulgaria did refer to new Android powered tablets, and considering how LG did not roll out new tablet models since 2011 (which happens to be an eternity in the world of consumer electronics), chances are we could be looking at a brand new 8.3 inch model and 9.8 inch model to be thrown into the mix. It remains to be seen just what kind of performance these tablets will be able to deliver, as well as whether they will occupy the high end market or not.

LG G Pad confirmed for 2013; flexible display and smartwatch in 2014

An exec at LG gave a bunch of details today about the company’s plans for the rest of the year and much of 2014, revealing a tablet is in the works and due to be released this year. A smartwatch, that may include previously teased flexible display tech that may act as a direct competitor […]

LG Smartwatch To Release In 2014

LG Smartwatch To Release In 2014

There are two kinds of companies that are working on smartwatches. Companies with deep pockets, billions in R&D funds such as Samsung, Apple and Microsoft. Then there are companies that require crowdfunding to bring their ideas and concepts such as the Pebble smartwatch, HOT Watch, Agent and TrueSmart to life. LG is one that doesn’t need crowdfunding. Dimitar Vulex, manage of mobile products at LG Bulgaria, said in an interview that the company will release a smartwatch next year.

Vulex said that LG’s main focus will remain on smartphones. He adds that the company wants to make smartphones even bigger than they are right now, and that LG will launch a phablet which will be larger than the LG G2, the company’s latest Android flagship device. He also revealed LG’s tablet plans, saying that the company will enter the market once again next year. A Firefox OS smartphone has also been added to the list of devices LG will release in 2014. Vulex didn’t reveal any specific details about the LG smartwatch. He didn’t say when the gadget will be released next year. LG’s Korea based rival Samsung is expected to launch its smartwatch next month, presumably at its Galaxy Note 3 event which takes place at the IFA conference in Berlin.

    LG V500 Receives FCC Approval

LG V500 Receives FCC ApprovalIt was not too long ago when a couple of new and upcoming LG tablets were on the receiving end of Bluetooth certification, and they are the LG V500 and LG V507L. Well, at long last, has the LG V500 decided to make a pit stop over at the FCC, which would translate to only one thing – it has just made another step closer to being released in the US. The FCC document concerning the LG V500 pointed to a tablet that boasts of dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, while everything else more or less remained mum in the FCC document.

One can draw a conclusion from it, however, that the LG V500 will, in all probability, be a Wi-Fi only tablet, while the LG V507L might very well be the tablet that will feature 3G or LTE connectivity. Hopefully, more will be revealed as the LG V507 decides to stop by the FCC for an inspection in due time. As for the naming convention, it remains to be seen, since both the LG G Pad as well as LG G Tab could be suitable monikers for the new tablet. We just hope that future LG devices that drop by the FCC would see additional information revealed rather than just its wireless connectivity options.

We’ve been hearing about the LG Enact ever since alleged press shots were leaked last month and is expected to be made available on Verizon Wireless. Today, everyone’s favorite Android device leaker, @evleaks, has discovered a new press image that outs the LG Enact as a QWERTY slider smartphone.  (more…)

LG Exec Talks Tablet, Smartwatch, Phablet, Firefox OS And Windows Phone Plans For This Year And Next

    lg-watch-phone

LG looks like it might be about to spread its bets around the table, according to a new interview with Bulgarian LG communications executive Dimitar Vulev. The interview from Dnevnik.bg (via Engadget) offers up an unusually transparent look at LG’s upcoming product plans, as Vulev details what the company is working on both for the end of the year and beyond.

The comms director says that LG is keenly aware of the phablet phenomenon, as evidenced by the Optimus View and Optimus G Pro, and adds that next year there will be “an even bigger phone.” This is also seen as a transition to the company focusing on larger-screen tablet devices, including a device to be launched “probably” by the end of the year. LG had previously shuttered its tablet efforts, but Vulev says it’s time to re-enter since it’s a “growing market” that has become much larger in recent years.

Android remains the primary focus of LG’s efforts in mobile, he said, but Windows Phone devices are also in the pipeline, though likely not on tap for this year. When and if we see a Windows Phone LG smartphone make it to market depends on how Microsoft develops the OS, Vulev explained. This mirrors what LG India Managing Director Kown Soon said back in July about Windows Phone 8. LG previously made Windows Phone 7 devices, but like its tablet efforts, production was put on hold after shipment shortfalls.

LG is also working on a Firefox OS phone, diversifying its software picture even further, Vulev said. So far, the open, web standards-based Firefox OS mobile platform hasn’t really had a champion among the core, big-name smartphone OEMs, so LG releasing one in early 2014 (if Vulev’s information is correct) could really help boost its presence and visibility.

Vulev also said that LG will be releasing a smartwatch, perhaps sometime next year, to debut first in the U.S. market. It could come with a flexible display, and while he admitted that LG’s previous GD910 watch phone was not successful, he suggested that the market is much more primed now for such a product than in the past.

While most companies aren’t so candid about future unreleased products, LG’s regional execs have a history of being rather more forthright than most, so it’s likely this is a genuine peek behind the curtain. Whether it’s a smart, systematic bet on a number of different horses, or a scattershot attempt at relevance, will only be proven out by the quality of these products when they do actually arrive.

Verizon LG Enact leaks in press image, proves QWERTY sliders still exist

Verizon LG Enact leaks in press image, proves that the reported death of the QWERTY slider was exaggerated

According to serial leak merchant @evleaks, the LG Enact is days away from making an official appearance on Verizon, a carrier that reckons there’s still life in the ‘ole keyboard-packed form factor, with a phone that looks a whole lot like the Android sliders of the past. Yep, LG’s new Android smartphone houses an increasingly rare full QWERTY keyboard, a pretty old-school four-key capacitive button layout, and a mix of Verizon and LG-skinned app icons. However, we’re already wary of how the Enact’s keyboard will handle — with space at a premium on these keyboards, that substantial border either side of the keys could result in some cramped thumbs. However, at this stage we’re not certain of the screen-size and dimensions of the slider, so we’ll hold our judgement until we get to tap away on it in real life.

LG exec: tablet, phablet, smartwatch and Firefox OS device coming soon

    lg-backing-off-tablets-focus-on-cellphones

LG’s mobile communications head in Bulgaria, Dimitar Valev, has laid out some of the company’s key plans in an interview with Dnevnik.bg. For starters, he confirmed that the company will fire up its temporarily mothballed tablet lines with a new model, likely the 9.8-inch V500 we saw at the FCC earlier today. On the smartphone side, LG will trump its 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro model with a 6-inch handset and release a Firefox OS device early next year. Most intriguingly, he said the company would give the smartwatch category another kick at the can, despite indifference to LG’s GD910 Watch Phone model several years ago — adding that the device might use flexible LCD tech. We’re not sure if Mr. Valev was speaking out of turn, but if accurate, it’ll be interesting to see how the new hardware pans out — especially LG’s take on Firefox OS.
