Editor’s Letter: Will LG get lucky with the G2?

In each issue of Distro, Executive Editor Marc Perton publishes a wrap-up of the week in news.

DNP Editor's Letter Will LG get lucky with the G2

It wasn’t long ago that the electronics divisions of Samsung and Lucky-Goldstar, two massive Korean conglomerates, played second fiddle to Japanese competitors like Sony and Panasonic.

Today, of course, Samsung is a leading manufacturer of everything from tablets to TVs, while Sony makes most of its money by selling life insurance. The renamed LG, meanwhile, continues to battle Samsung on the international stage. In the cellphone industry, for example, LG ranks fourth, behind Apple, Nokia and market-leader Samsung. In TVs, LG ranks second, behind, yes, first-place Samsung.

LG’s latest salvo, fired this week, comes in the form of the G2, a flagship smartphone that left our Sarah Silbert impressed during her brief time with it. Boasting a 13-megapixel camera that can potentially hold its own against the shooters in the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4, and a range of new features like Answer Me, which lets the phone automatically connect to incoming calls when held to your ear, the G2 could be, in Sarah’s words, “a compelling flagship.”

Korean LG G2 Comes With Removable Battery

When the LG G2 was announced officially earlier this week, some confusion about the situation arose – where selected sources pointed to a 2,610mAh battery, while there was another camp that claimed the new flagship device to come with a larger 3,000mAh battery. Of course, there were also additional disputes and debates going on, when some LG documents as well as white papers of the device began to tout a microSD memory card slot – something that was missing on the LG G2 which was seen and handled at the New York City launch.

It seems that there are two sides to a story most of the time, and in the unboxing video that you can see by South Korean UnderKG, it seems that all the confusion stemmed from another unannounced variant of the handset – which happens to be the South Korea-bound LG G2, which carries different hardware specifications compared to the one that was unveiled. The LG G2 which was unboxed comes with the smaller 2,160mAh battery that happens to be a Li-Ion battery. The reason behind this? The battery ends up as removable, and you can swap it with a full battery whenever it starts to run low. Not only that, there is also a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes, and the inclusion of these two “features” would mean a slight change in dimensions compared to the international LG G2, making it 0.24mm thicker.

LG Optimus L9 II Could Have Hit The FCC

LG Optimus L9 II Could Have Hit The FCCAll right, while the world is still abuzz with word of LG’s latest flagship, the LG G2, this does not mean that the South Korean consumer electronics giant does not have some of its attention pointed elsewhere. No sir, there is a very real possibility that the successor to the LG Optimus L9 (tipped for an August 7th release which has, sad to say, come and gone without nary a peep at it) has already hit the FCC. Of course, the naming convention of this particular handset is not exactly the most creative one in the world, but it will work, giving an overall sense of continuity.

Apparently, this particular handset that goes by the codename LG-D605 in the FCC has already passed its certification today, and while there is no concrete confirmation that it is the Optimus L9 II, the model itself could have given the game away, especially since it has been previously linked to the Optimus L9 II, albeit in a rather mystery shrouded GFXBench result. There was no testing of LTE bands, but it was mentioned that FeliCa NFC technology is part of the deal, which is more or less confirmation that this puppy is about to debut in the Japanese market when released.

    LG Optimus L1 II Announced

LG Optimus L1 II AnnouncedSo, the whole world is enamored with the high end LG G2 which was recently announced, but how about something that is more easy on the pocket – in terms of pricing as well as size. We are looking at the LG Optimus L1 II in the image above, which was recently announced to be the latest member of the refreshed Optimus L family. The whole idea of the LG Optimus L1 II is to deliver a stylish handset (within the boundaries of LG’s definition of the word, of course) without compromising on entry level performance, all without having to break the bank, of course.

The name itself will most probably raise a fair number of eyebrows – after all, the L1 II does not happen to be a successor to a previous handset, as there was no such thing as an Optimus L1 in the first place. I guess the “II” there would depict the next generation of Optimus L series smartphones, no? After all, there is the Optimus L3 II and Optimus L5 II, so this naming convention would make plenty of sense. Hardware specifications of this device include a 3” 240×320 touchscreen display, a 2-megapixel shooter at the back with VGA capability, a 1GHz single-core processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB of internal memory, a microSD memory card slot, 7.2 Mbps HSPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a 1,540 mAh battery and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in tow.

Did the unannounced LG Optimus L9 II just sneak past the FCC?

Did LG's Optimus L9 II just sneak past the FCC

We’ve heard not a peep about a potential successor to LG’s Optimus L9 since a couple of pics popped up on @evleaks at the beginning of June. The Optimus L9 II — or just L9 II if recent naming conventions apply — remains unannounced, but we’ve reason to believe it’s just broken cover at the FCC. A device going by the codename LG-D605 passed certification today, and although we can’t be sure it’s the L9 II, that model number has previously been linked to the handset, if only in a mysterious GFXBench result. No LTE bands were tested, and a mention of FeliCa NFC technology means this particular variant is almost certainly intended for the Japanese market. Beyond confirmation of a removable battery, there’s nothing else to glean from the filing, but it could indicate that the G2 won’t be LG’s newest new phone much longer.

Verizon LG G2 wireless charging exclusive in the US

The Verizon LG G2 will be the only variant of the new Android flagship to support native wireless charging in the US, the carrier has confirmed, building the cable-free technology into the phone itself. LG G2 confirmed to arrive on Three and O2 in the UK

LG G2 confirmed to arrive on Three and O2 in the UK

Following the formal reveal of the LG G2 yesterday, UK network Three was quick to report its plan to offer the handset “soon,” so we thought we’d follow up with all the other major providers to see where else you’ll eventually be able to find one. O2 is also on board, although it would only commit to a vague release window of “later this year.” Vodafone said it currently has no plans to offer the G2, and while EE has “nothing to announce,” we couldn’t get any assurance that it wouldn’t show up on its 4G network, or on the Orange or T-Mobile brands. Retailer Carphone Warehouse has put a tentative October arrival date on its website, and although we’re still waiting on a response from Phones 4U, you’ll more than likely be able to find it there, too. So, if you’ve developed a particular taste for the slim bezel design and quirky button placement, you’ll have at least a few options come launch time.
