LG Reportedly Wants to Sell You a Flexible OLED Phone This Year

LG’s first flexible OLED phone due before the year is out

LG plans to launch a flexible OLED smartphone before the end of the year, the company’s VP of mobile has confirmed, though it’s unclear to what extent the work-in-progress handset will actually flex. The OLED panel in question is the handiwork of LG Display according to VP of LG mobile Yoon Bu-hyun, the WSJ reports, with the proposed device set to launch sometime in Q4.

LG Display’s work on flexible OLEDs has been underway for some time, though the company’s efforts have perhaps been overshadowed somewhat by rival Samsung’s YOUM development. Last year, according to a Korea Times report, LG Display was preparing for mass-production of flexible screens by the second half of 2013.

Samsung, meanwhile, demonstrated a flexible OLED concept back at CES, though the screen wasn’t implemented in quite the way many had expected. Rather than being a clamshell device, with the flexibility used to allow the prototype to open up and reveal a bigger panel, Samsung instead wrapped the display around the edge.

That allowed the handset to display status updates along the side, making for at-a-glance notifications without needing to power up the whole display. However, Samsung insisted at the time that the device was merely a concept of what flexible OLED could be used for, not an indication of an actual product in development.

While OLED panels have become more common in their use on mobile devices, LG Display still faces potential bottlenecks in ensuring supplies for its smartphone affiliate. Analysts have already warned that the next-gen displays still suffer from low yields, which likely means high prices and low numbers of products.

That would probably put the eventual device in line with LG’s curved OLED TVs, demonstrated at CES, officially intended for the market but at a cost that will make the potential audience tiny. Nonetheless, as a proof of capabilities, it suggests we could see flexible OLED phones more widespread in 2014 and beyond.

LG’s head-mounted display patent ensures you’re always watching

DNP LG patents headmounted display, acts as visiontriggered secondary viewer

While head-mounted displays are nothing new, LG has patented a novel method for utilizing them that might grab your attention. The patent states that when you’re staring at content on a device like a tablet, the HMD is inactive. But turn your head or the device away and that same content will automatically fade into view right in front of your bespectacled eyes. According to the filing, the noggin-strapped contraption is set to buzz as it switches displays and there’ll be a slight transitional pause when viewing video. While we’re betting virtual reality goggles and Google-branded headgear might prove to be a touch more popular, this is at least a lot cooler than passive 3D clip-ons.

LG Q1 earnings come in lower than last year, but phone sales are up

LG Q1 earnings come in lower last year, but mobile business is improved

LG has released its earnings report for the first quarter of 2013, and while they were down overall from last year, there is good news to report for its phones. A net profit of $20.3 million is lower than Q1 2012’s $214 million — but better than Q4’s lawsuit-related $428 million loss — blamed on weaker earnings in its home theater business. The good news is reserved for phones, where sales were up 30 percent from last year thanks to devices like the Optimus G (original, Pro and Nexus 4) and L series. Home Entertainment sales dropped to their lowest level in the past year, blamed mostly on a decline in plasmas and professional displays. Q2 is expected to be another good one as the Optimus L Series II, 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro and Optimus F ship worldwide. According to LG its LCD sales were actually up thanks to growing demand in Europe and China, but profits took a hit because of increased competition. While it doesn’t expect the overall market to change, it is looking for better results in Q2 as its new Smart and 3D TVs hit shelves along with upcoming 4K and OLED sets. We’ll keep digging through the numbers for more details, check the source link below to take a look for yourself.

LG Optimus G Pro appears in press event invite

This week the folks at LG have revealed the contents of their soon-approaching press event for New York City: the smartphone known as the LG Optimus G Pro. This device has been released internationally and will be appearing in the United States with 4G LTE capabilities and a set of specifications not unlike that of the international edition. This device will be revealed with full details at the event which will take place on the first of May in the evening at a concert event.

This concert will feature the band known as Atlas Genius. This is the latest in a line of similar events hosted by LG, Samsung, and most recently HTC. Just this past week an HTC mini-concert was held with musician Pharrell Williams in promotion of the HTC One smartphone release. Several months ago, Samsung brought the Samsung Galaxy Note II to the United States with a mini-concert put on by Kanye West.

Even Apple has joined in the fun with an appearance by the Foo Fighters at the iPhone 5 release event this past year. Now with the LG Optimus G Pro, LG will be the bringing an engagement to New York City. It’s not known at the moment if the smartphone will be available at the event for demonstrations or if the company will be revealing any release information before or after the music event.

With the release of the LG Optimus G Pro, LG will have effectively updated their large smartphone nearly-tablet-sized segment while the Verizon Intuition by LG remains out there for consumers looking for a pen-toting experience. Here with the LG Optimus G Pro, Qualcomm has also jumped onboard with the Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor, this being the same processor coming with the HTC One and the Samsung GALAXY S 4.

LG Optimus G Pro Confirmed For U.S. Debut On May 1 In NYC

LG Optimus G Pro Confirmed For U.S. Debut On May 1 In NYC

Last week, LG sent out an invite for an upcoming event it was planning to hold in New York City on May 1. We speculated the event could be used as a way to introduce the LG Optimus G Pro to the U.S. market, and LG today confirmed what we originally thought in a new media event invite.

The invite says “LG invites you to Share the Genius of LG Optimus G Pro” and promises an exclusive concert at the event from Atlas Genius. Not only does LG confirm the debut of the Optimus G Pro during the event, but the company also included an image of the smartphone as well as its logo on the invite. (more…)

LG’s NYC press event aims to ‘share the genius’ of the Optimus G Pro

LG

LG’s just shed some much-needed light on its May 1st New York event. Turns out the “genius” the company will be celebrating stands for Atlas Genius — as in the band — and the star of this fete: the Optimus G Pro. We’ve already seen and very favorably reviewed the global model of LG’s performance flagship (for the G’s successor, you’ll have to wait until Q3) and now it looks like the US is in store for a potential carrier-branded version of its own. If it arrives internally unmolested, we’re looking at a 5.5-inch 1080p True HD IPS+ display, Snapdragon 600 and a 2.1-megapixel / 13-megapixel camera setup capable of dual video recording. We’ll be on-site for this stateside debut, so stay tuned for the full monty.

LG Tests Out New IPS UltraWide Monitor In Men’s Room

The world of display technology continues to march forward relentlessly, where in years past we have seen the jumps made from black and white to color, to flat screen TVs before Full High Definition took over the scene, and now there is 3D to contend with. Well, images on the TV are getting more and more lifelike than ever before, thanks to an infusion of advancements made in display technology alongside better recording capabilities of devices, but just how lifelike would images on the new LG IPS 21:9 UltraWide monitor are? LG decided to put it to a special psycho-physical test in the men’s room, as you can see in the video above.

LG is definitely no stranger to IPS displays, as they have introduced their fair share of models in the past, but certainly what they have done this time around is hilarious, and we would not mind going into a men’s room that is so well equipped. In fact, there should be a control group, where an actual model stands behind a glass display that masquerades as LG’s IPS UltraWide monitor just to see what one’s reaction is.

Watch LG Use IPS Displays to Make Men Stop Peeing at a Urinal

After pranking elevator passengers to think they were falling with its IPS displays, LG has moved on to trick even more vulnerable suckers: males trying to pee at a urinal. This time, LG put its IPS displays right in front of a urinal and let two attractive women tease the restroom goers. It’s pretty hilarious. More »
