LG G2 Android 4.4 Update Coming Late Q1, 2014 In Canada

LG G2 Android 4.4 Update Coming Late Q1, 2014 In Canada

LG’s latest Android flagship smartphone, the G2, has brought in rave reviews. The device has been appreciated by Android enthusiasts around the world, and those who have already picked up a unit for themselves are anxiously waiting for Android 4.4 KitKat to drop. So far there hasn’t been any indication when the update is going to be released in the U.S., though word has arrived from LG Canada. Court Elliot, a representative for the company in Canada, says that LG G2 Android 4.4 update is going to be released in late Q1, 2014, which means possibly by the end of March next year.

Elliot also says that all carriers in the country are going to receive the update at the same time, though that doesn’t mean all carriers are going to release the update at the same time as well. Some carriers tend to test out the updates a little longer before rolling them out. The representative across the border did not comment on when the update is going to be released for LG Optimus G, the company’s former flagship which is currently running on Android 4.1.2. Those who are using the Verizon variant of the device in the U.S. can try out KitKat right now through an unofficial custom ROM.

    Engadget’s smartphone buyer’s guide: fall 2013

    Engadget's smartphone buyer's guide: fall 2013

As the leaves turn to gold and flutter from the trees, the Engadget team digs out their scarves and mittens to get ready for the mad rush of phone launches that take place ahead of the holiday season. We’ve seen big devices (both large and high-profile ones) enter the world over the last few months, including new heavyweights from Apple and Google. Then there’s Samsung, Nokia and HTC, which are all following the philosophy that bigger is better.

But it’s not just on the hardware side that things are getting exciting. T-Mobile’s eliminated roaming charges and Verizon is doubling its LTE speeds to a whopping 80 Mbps. AT&T is offering customers a $5 daily pass for internet and is making mobile share plans the standard rather than the exception. Of course, if you’d prefer unlimited data, Sprint is promising that its Spark LTE will beat the field — but it’s currently only available in NYC, LA, Chicago, Tampa and Miami. Whether you’re looking for a smartphone right now, or if you’re contract is about to expire, this is your guide to the best ones on the market.

Verizon G2 Android 4.4 Custom ROM Released

LG hasn’t said when it is going to release Android 4.4 KitKat update for its flagship smartphone, the G2. Moreover, it is not known when carriers will be done with their approval of said update. At any rate, its bound to take a while before the latest and greatest Android update becomes officially available for G2 owners. Fret not if you’ve been craving for a piece of KitKat, a Verizon G2 Android 4.4 custom ROM has been released which brings near vanilla KitKat experience to your LG smartphone.

The ROM is based off of AOSP with a few additional features added by the developer, such as carrier label options, performance control, application permissions control, background style and more. Status bar, hardware key and lockscreen mods have been added as well. The Gummy Android 4.4 ROM is only for Verizon LG G2, don’t attempt installing on any other variant. Prior to installation, make sure that your device is rooted. Also create a backup as flashing the custom ROM will delete all of your data. If you’re new to flashing custom ROMs, keep in mind that things can go awry which might end up harming your device, so its always best to be sure before poking around. Those who’re good to go can grab the custom Gummy ROM for Verizon LG G2 from here.

LG Reportedly Shifting Focus From Smartphones To TVs

LG Reportedly Shifting Focus From Smartphones To TVs

LG makes a wide variety of products, from home appliances to TVs and smartphones. However, local media reports coming in from Korea suggest that the company feels it may be more successful in the TV business as opposed to smartphones. The report cites sources who claim that LG is moving its focus from smartphones to its TV business as it believes that the latter will be more beneficial in the short term.

While it is said that LG will not reduce research and development investment in the smartphone division, it may reduce the division’s workforce, this according to industry sources cited in the report. They say that the company doesn’t believe smartphones don’t hold any value, its just that it sees its short term success in the TV business. Its not that LG isn’t capable of producing a good smartphone, one that can perform well in the market. LG G2 is a prime example, the device was very well received and it has performed relatively well in the market. LG has not officially commented on this report, so a grain of salt is advised nonetheless. Even if the company wants to focus more on TVs from now on and less on smartphones, hopefully its upcoming television sets won’t be caught spying on viewers.

White LG G2 Spotted, Targets Verizon

White LG G2 Spotted, Targets VerizonThe LG G2 has been out for some time already, and Verizon customers are able to pick up one of these handsets any time that they like, although they will only be able to choose from one color – that would be black. However, it does seem that a recent leak could point to something else that might appeal to those who want their smartphones to arrive in a color other than boring black. On the Twitter page over at @evleaks, there was a photo posted up which does seem to resemble that of a white LG G2 handset complete with a Verizon Wireless logo that has been stamped on the back.

So far, the folks over at Verizon has not given away any indication in particular that they will start to sell the white version of the LG G2 anytime soon, but I suppose that might change in the near future if the leaked image from serial leaksters @evleaks happen to turn out to be true. Would you pick up a white version of the LG G2 just for the sake of it looking different from the current model in terms of its color? One thing’s for sure, the LG G2, regardless of which color it comes in, is a pretty fly and highly functional smartphone.

Sprint Launches LG G2, Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 And Galaxy S4 Mini

Sprint customers are in for a treat this month. The carrier has launched a number of popular Android devices. This time around, it also got the new Nexus smartphone. That’s right, the new Nexus 5 is available from Sprint now. Apart from that particular device, Sprint has also launched the LG G2, Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 as well as the Galaxy S4 Mini. Current and prospective Sprint subscribers have a lot to choose from now.

The Nexus 5 and G2 are made by the same manufacturer, LG. The G2 is priced $199.99 with a two year contract, it has a 5.2 inch full HD display, a 2.3GHz quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB RAM, 13 megapixel rear camera, 32GB onboard storage and a 3,000mAh battery. Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 is also priced $199.99, it has a gigantic 6.3 inch display, a 1.7GHz dualcore processor with 1.5GB of RAM, 8 megapixel camera, 16GB onboard storage and a 3,200mAh battery. Which means that the LG G2 and Galaxy Mega 6.3 will cost those customers $99.99 whereas the Galaxy S4 Mini will be free on contract.

LG G2 For Verizon To Go Free On Contract Until 11th November

LG G2 For Verizon To Go Free On Contract Until 11th NovemberThe LG G2 is an impressive device and is admittedly one of the better LG phones we have reviewed to date. Some of the features we loved was its display and camera, which surprisingly performed very well under low-light conditions, giving Apple’s iPhone 5 a run for its money. Well the good news is that if you were looking for a new phone but were on a tight budget, you might be interested to learn that Verizon is now offering the LG G2 for free, although you will need to sign with a new two-year contract with the carrier, and use the VZWDEAL promo code in order to claim the device for free for yourself. The deal is only available until the 11th of November, so if you’re still on the fence, now’s as good a time as any!

For those unfamiliar with the LG G2, this is LG’s flagship device for 2013. The handset will feature a 5.2” Full HD IPS display, and with 1920×1080 pixels crammed into that 5.2” display, you can look forward to a pixel density of 432ppi. The LG G2 will also be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.26GHz, a 13MP rear-facing camera with optical image stabilization, a 2.1MP front-facing camera, and a 3,000mAh battery to top things off. If this sounds like the phone for you, hit up Verizon’s website for the details, and don’t forget to use the promo code to claim the free device!

LG Launches Device Loaner Program With The LG G2

LG Launches Device Loaner Program With The LG G2One of the drawbacks to developing for Android devices is that you have a ton of devices that you need to make your app compatible with, assuming you’re trying to reach as broad an audience as possible. Due to the different hardware, such as different chipsets, this might not necessarily be possible for smaller developers who do not have access to the different devices to test their apps with. The good news is that LG is looking to do their part with their Device Loaner Program which was announced last week during LG’s Android Developer’s VIP event.

Basically what this program does is that LG will loan developers their latest smartphone, the LG G2, for a good 30 days in which the developers will be able to use the device for testing and development purposes. The device will be free to loan and all developers will have to pay is the shipping back to LG once the 30-day period is up, or when they are done with the phone. Presumably LG will charge the developers a fee if there are any damages done to the phone, but other than that it does sound like a pretty decent program. Additional LG devices that developers will be able to choose from includes the LG Optimus G and the LG Optimus G Pro.

LG has announced that it is expanding its Android Developers Program with a device-loaning program, giving developers a handset for free to use during the development process.
