LG G Pro 2 confirmed to arrive next month

Without saying much, or anything at all for that matter, LG has just confirmed the existence of the LG G Pro 2. The company has also revealed the the smartphone … Continue reading

LG Nexus 5 appears as Verizon LG G2 variant at FCC

There should be little doubt that Google is planning on continuing their Nexus smartphone program well into the future – that much is clear. What’s not as clear is their release schedule and manufacturer choices – the pattern we’ve expected to find appearing several years ago with a new OEM for each device being doused […]

Qualcomm earnings show record quarter as Snapdragon keys in on smartphone heroes

If you picked up an HTC One, a Samsung Galaxy S 4, an LG Optimus G, or a Motorola DROID RAZR HD device over the past few months, you’re now working with Qualcomm hardware. That’s exactly as this company intended for this year’s smart device push – and exactly what Qualcomm’s earnings report this week shows. Qualcomm’s fiscal Q3 2013 starts with a cool $6.24 billion in revenues, up 35% compared to the same quarter last year.

    sg_nokia_mwc2013_1

Up there at the top end of the smartphone spectrum, Qualcomm made a killing in sales this quarter. They also sat in the entire range of Windows Phone 8 devices released this year (and throughout the OS’s history, for that matter), and have been part of quite a few of each of the top manufacturer’s midrange phones as well.

    20130528_164605-580x371

It was more common over the past several months to hear of a smartphone being released with a Qualcomm processor than it was to hear of a smartphone being released with a processor made by any other company. Qualcomm let it be known that for the three months in this third quarter of their fiscal 2013, they had MSM chip shipments at 172 million units. That represents a 22% growth over this same quarter one year ago.

Qualcomm currently has $30.4 billion of cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities (as of June 30, 2013), and has announced a return of capital to stockholders in the form of $1.64 billion – that’s including $604 million, or $0.35 per share, of cash dividends paid as well as $1.04 billion through repurchases of 16.7 million shares of common stock.

    snapdragon

That’s not half bad for what’s easily on of the most visible mobile chipmakers on the planet – Qualcomm also notes that they’ve now got an operating cash flow at $2.08 billion, up 125% year-over-year. The Snapdragon-toting group of processor makers reports operating income at $1.68 billion as well – that’s up 21% compared to this same quarter one year ago.

LG G Watch leads the wearables way as Glass tips Google integration

It’s not hard to imagine LG bringing a new wave of devices with “G” at their brand head now that the company has made clear they’re keeping the one-letter titles. What’s unclear is the full expanse that the company hopes to cover with the array of trademark filings appearing this week, all of them coming from KIPO. The Korean Intellectual Property Office doesn’t always indicate which products will be appearing in the wild worldwide, but in this case, LG may have a big push incoming.

    wrist33-580x387

What you’ll find at KIPO is more than just the LG GPAD, explored a bit earlier today by SlashGear as well. You’ll also find the following, each of them appearing one on top of the other as LG lets the whole collection hit filings at once. Note that SlashGear has added the possibilities – the titles alone come from LG.

    GPad – Android tablet
G Watch – Android smartwatch not unlike Motorola’s MOTOACTV
G Glass – software-based connection with Google Glass
G Link – wireless mirroring and/or cloud sharing service for LG devices
G Band – Wearable aetheletic device not unlike the Nike Fuelband
G Hub – LG-centric app store and/or hub connecting to Google Play for media

It’s not hard to see how these bits and pieces might be inspired by Samsung’s own set of devices and apps. Now we’ll have to see how quick they catch up with those systems that’ve been running for months, or in some cases, years.

    asdfdaswtmk-580x326

Now we’ll see if LG decides that these products can be created and made press-ready quick enough for the August 7th event that’ll have the LG G2 standing proud as the company’s next-generation hero smartphone. Will this be the birth of another one-hero strategy, proven strong by the likes of companies such as HTC with the HTC One over the past half-year? Let’s see it happen!

    Thanks for the tip, Florian!

LG tablet “GPAD” teased at G2 event looms

It would appear that it’s not just Motorola that’s getting (back) into the wearable smart devices business this week at LG’s own trademark list leak tips several new units. What’s spilled here in late July is a series of names: GPAD, G Hub, and G Glass, the first likely referring to none other than a brand new tablet. Remember the last time LG brought a tablet to the public?

    T-Mobile-G-Slate-LG-07-SlashGear-580x343

It’s been tipped that a new LG tablet of some sort would be coming here inside 2013. Though back in May a tipster’s suggestion did not clarify whether the company would work with Windows or Android for its next slate push, we’re guessing it’s squarely in the latter corner at this point.

What with their re-dedication to the “G” brand family and tips of an LG G2 coming up quick. Expect one fewer camera than the original LG G-Slate this time around – 3D is all but dead, in that latitude.

In the company’s latest reminder that the LG G2 will be coming soon, LG pushes “LG G Next”, and fills in the blanks for the company’s next aim: the user. Sound familiar?

It may very well be that we’ll be seeing more than just the one device come August 7th. That’s the date of the next big LG event, and the place we’ll almost certainly be seeing the LG G2 for the first time – so to speak. Stay tuned for the next big LG wave!

LG G2 confirmed as Optimus G successor, is first in new “G” brand

LG has fired off an announcement this evening confirming what we already knew: that the Optimus G’s successor will be known simply as the LG G2, dropping the “Optimus” name. In addition, says the company, this handset will mark the first in what will be a series of “premium” smartphones branded under the “G” label. We’ve got a brief word from LG’s CEO after the jump.

    500_1

Along with the announcement, LG’s President and CEO Dr. Jong-seok Park said: “Our vision is to make LG’s newest G devices synonymous with excellence, raising the bar even further for the ultimate in user experience. The new G2 will build upon the excellent reputation established by previous G Series products.” In addition to the “G” premium series, LG will also be branding its 4:3 display handsets as “Vu:”.

We’ve seen a variety of leaks concerning the LG G2, including one earlier this week claiming that the handset will feature a 2540mAh battery. In addition, photographs said to be of the handset have surfaced, as well as a video showing the device in action. A whole slew of specifications have already leaked, leaving little to the imagination at this point.

LG will be unveiling the device at an event on August 7, so there’s precious few days left before we get the official goods on the handset (name aside). Until then, however, what we’ve heard points at the handset offering a 5.2-inch display, as well as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.2GHz processor with 2GB of RAM. The software is said to be Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2, and the camera is a rumored 13-megapixel offering.

Stay tuned, and we’ll update you as more details on the handset surfaces leading up to LG’s August 7 event. Until then, check out the timeline below for some other information that has surfaced on the handset.

LG Optimus G2 event scheduled for August 7th

While final specifications on the LG Optimus G2 have not yet been solidified, the company has all but guaranteed that we’ll be having our first official look on the 7th of August. Event invites for the press have been sent out for a New York City engagement that’ll be taking place on that date with a teaser “Great 2 Have You” attached – and the leaked photos of the device itself continue.

    lgevent

What you’re about to see are a series of images and details leaked over the past week (or in some cases, the last several months). The first is a front and back image of the LG Optimus G2 suggesting that the rumors of a buttonless set of edges on this machine are true. Here LeaksChina provides photos so blurry you’ll have trouble believing they were captured by anything better than a 1 megapixel feature phone shooter – but they do the job regardless.

Next you’ll see an image of the device’s left side. This image is provided by TechTastic and suggests that we’ll be seeing a rather thin device to boot.

    Schermafbeelding-2013-07-08-om-00-1.48.341

It’s been suggested that this machine will be a hero device for LG to take on the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S 4. To do this, the company is tipped to be bringing on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor and a top-notch display with edge-to-edge technology making for a rather unique experience in the palm of the users’ hand.

    • 5.5-inch 1080p display

    • Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor at clock speed 2.3GHz for each of four cores

• 2GB RAM

    • 13-megapixel back-facing camera aside volume and power buttons

• Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean / LG UI

    • Edge-to-edge display (aka a very small bezel)

You’ll see a collection of leaked images and details collected by SlashGear back on June 22nd that make the case for the phone outlined above as well.

Also of interest is the invite image itself – this BEAST is a massive 2,999 x 2,584 pixels when extracted. This is FAR larger than any average event invite for the press – normally they’re less than a few hundred pixels large, and blurry at that. Here LG has clearly made an effort to go big – and sharp. Stick around for the full show – SlashGear will be in NYC on the 7th with bells on.

LG Optimus G2 takes shape: Snapdragon 800, edge-to-edge display, August 7th

If you hadn’t already guessed that the August 7th New York City event being held by LG would be home to their next-generation hero, follow-up to the LG Optimus G from last year, you may as well give in this weekend. Today a set of three (count them – three!) screenshots have leaked with 1080p

LG Optimus G successor to score Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors

Way back in March, we saw benchmarks leak for the LG Optimus G successor, the oft-referred to Optimus G2. The benchmarks showed it running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, something that just became official via an announcement by LG. With the new processor will come a nice boost in battery life and quite a bit
