LinkedIn Has Denied Harvesting User Email Accounts Illegally

LinkedIn Has Denied Harvesting User Email Accounts IllegallyAt the end of last week, we brought you word that customers have already filed a lawsuit against LinkedIn, claiming that the company has hacked their email accounts without prior permission. Well, LinkedIn has already issued a denial over this particular allegation that they have broken into the email accounts of its members without permission beforehand in order to harvest their contacts’ addresses. In the class action complaint by a quartet of users, they charged that the professional networking site had hacked into their external email accounts, and this alleged act also included the downloading of addresses of their contacts for monetary gain, in addition to promoting their services to these contacts on a repeated basis.

The four are Paul Perkins, Pennie Sempell, Ann Brandwein, and Erin Eggers, and the crux of the case will most probably have to do with the alleged hacking of the user’s email account, in addition to downloading of addresses that was performed without “clearly notifying the user or obtaining his or her consent.” LinkedIn, in their defence, claimed that they are above board of such behavior, and claimed that such allegations are false. Blake Lawit, senior director of litigation at LinkedIn, mentioned, “We never send messages or invitations to join LinkedIn on your behalf to anyone unless you have given us permission to do so.” Time to let the law of the land run its due course.

Customers Sue LinkedIn Alleging It Hacked Their Email Accounts

Customers Sue LinkedIn Alleging It Hacked Their Email Accounts

LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional social network, has been sued by customers who allege that it hacked their email accounts and downloaded contacts illegally. The customers aim to lead a group suit against LinkedIn, they’ve asked a federal judge in San Jose, California to stop LinkedIn from repeating any such practise and also return any revenue that it might have made by using their identities in order to promote its own website to non-members. Speaking to Bloomberg, Doug Madey, a spokesman for LinkedIn said that the company believes this lawsuit is without merit, they’re ready to fight back vigorously.

The allegation here is that LinkedIn is accessing users’ email accounts and downloading their contacts, it is then sending multiple emails to non-members about its products and services. The plaintiffs allege that “LinkedIn’s appropriation of email addresses to send multiple reminder emails promoting its service is motivated by monetary gain. Plaintiffs are pushing for a jury trial. LinkedIn calls itself the largest online professional network with over 238 million members, it also claims to tout executives from every Fortune 500 company. The company’s spokesman says that it is committed to putting its members first, and that this entails “being transparent about how we protect and utilize our members’ data.”

LinkedIn petitions court to provide more details regarding government data requests

LinkedIn petitions court for more transparency in government data requests

It’s not just the heaviest of the internet heavyweights pushing for greater government transparency. LinkedIn has filed its own petition with the US Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court asking for the ability to publish the exact number of national security requests that it gets. The social network argues that restricting data request numbers to vague ranges is not only pointless, but misleading — the figures imply that the government wants as much data from LinkedIn as it does from larger firms. There’s no certainty that the court will grant the company’s wish, but its petition adds volume to an increasingly louder chorus.

LinkedIn launches University Pages, helps students learn more about colleges

LinkedIn launches University Pages, helps students learn more about colleges

LinkedIn has already branched out a bit with its own blogging and following features for select groups, and now the popular social networking site has introduced a tool geared towards students. Aptly dubbed University Pages, LinkedIn describes the new service as one that’s part of its strategy to help college-bound pupils “at every critical milestone from campus to fulfilling successful careers.”

Beginning September 12th, LinkedIn’s set to welcome high school students on its network and provide access to the new University Pages, allowing them to explore and rub elbows with about 200 participating universities, both in the US and abroad. Users will then be able to do things such as receive regular updates about campus news / activities and view notable members of each college’s alumni. If one of your favorite schools isn’t there just yet, fret not — LinkedIn says “thousands more” will be given access over the next few weeks.
