Linksys Routers Malware The Moon Spreading

Linksys router users might want to take some extra precautions. Johannes B. Ullrich, a security researcher at the SANS Technology Institute, has revealed that the company’s wireless routers are being targeted by malware, essentially a self replicating worm, which exploits code execution and authentication bypass vulnerabilities. Basically the Linksys router malware is spreading from router to router, attacking the existing firmware and then replicating itself. It dubbed as “The Moon.”

Linksys WRT 1900AC Router: The Blue and Black is Back

Today’s Linksys routers and networking devices are usually clad in black and silver. But the company’s most recognizable product wore blue and black: the WRT54G series router. First released in 2002, it was one of the first routers to be compatible with the 802.11g wireless standard and became Linksys’ bestselling product. It even appeared on South Park! Now Linksys has announced the WRT54G’s successor, the WRT 1900AC. Yep, it’s in mom’s colors.

Not wanting to let down the seven people who were celebrating the WRT54G’s birthdays, Linksys seems to be going all out with the WRT 1900AC. First off, it complies with the new 802.11ac wireless standard, with theoretical maximum throughputs of 1.3Gbps on the 5GHz band and 600Mbps on the 2.4GHz. As you can see it also has four antennas for better coverage. The antennas are removable in case Linksys releases better versions in the future.

Linksys is also working with the members of the popular OpenWrt software to release an open source firmware for the router when it goes on sale. That means more flexibility for power users. The ports you’d expect out of a high-end router – 4 LAN, 1 USB 3.0 and 1 USB/eSATA – are all here as well.

If you’re still not convinced that the WRT 1900AC is worthy of its predecessor, wait ’til you hear about its mobile app. That’s right – the router will have a companion app to help you manage your network and even access content if you have an external drive connected to the router. Watch the video while I bring out the party hats and cut the cake:

The WRT 1900AC router should be available this spring for $300 (USD). Celebrating a router’s 11th birthday. If that’s not what my job is then I don’t know what I’m doing.

Linksys Revives a Classic Design For Its Newest Wireless Router

Linksys N750 Dual-Band X3500 gateway packs DSL and WiFi

Linksys has outed its latest modem-router, the N750 Dual-Band X3500, bundling ADSL and gigabit ethernet connectivity along with wireless and app support. Offering dual-band 802.11n for up to 450Mbps wireless, along with four gigabit ethernet ports and a USB port that can be used to share external storage and printers with multiple networked devices.

There’s also DLNA streaming and support for guest networks, allowing you to open up select access to visitors. In fact, the functionality is the same as the N750 wireless router-only that Linksys announced last year, only with the addition of ADSL support.

There’s still a WAN port for external modems, in case you subsequently want to use the X3500 with a cable or fiber modem. Linksys also offers mobile apps for iOS and Android, Cisco Connect Express, for remotely tweaking settings, monitoring usage, and upgrading firmware.

Hook up a USB drive, meanwhile, and you can access its contents from any networked device, or indeed stream from it to your PS3, Xbox, or other gadget; a USB printer can also be shared. The Linksys N750 Dual-Band X3500 router is available in the UK now, priced at £139 ($213).

    Belkin completes Linksys acquistition

Back in January, we reported that Belkin was gearing up to acquire Linksys. That day has finally come, with the company announcing earlier today that the acquisition is complete. Linksys products will still be offered under that name, and not much will change for customers, but this marks a big day for Belkin.

    Screenshot from 2013-03-15 21:08:53

Belkin said in its announcement that it has several announcements planned for this spring, and that consumers will be seeing new Linksys-branded products rolling out this year. By acquiring the latter company, Belkin plans to reach more customers, and to also position itself as the “premier ecosystem” for smart homes.

Belkin’s CEO Chet Pipkin had this to say: “Linksys has a rich heritage, a passionate customer base and a wide product line, all of which fueled our decision to acquire the company and our plan to maintain the Linksys brand. The Linksys portfolio will continue to exist and evolve to include even richer user experiences and network management functionality. Smart Wi-Fi is an innovative and easy way for consumers to stay connected to their home network and we look to continue investing in it by adding more features and products.”

Belkin’s CEO goes on to say that the company is honored to take on and continue with the Linksys brand. Current customers don’t need to worry – their warranties will continue to be honored, as well as future Linksys warranties. In addition, Linksys will continue to offer support via its existing infrastructure and website support pages.
