LEGO enthusiast Michael Thomas made this awesome LEGO replica of Adventure Time’s BMO. But wait! BMO is computer! Michael also put a Raspberry Pi inside BMO, as well as a 2.5″ screen. That means he can actually use his BMO to play video games, just like Finn and Jake do with the cartoon BMO.
Michael’s BMO runs on Raspbian, a Debian-based operating system optimized for the Raspberry Pi. It also has a USB port, a microSD card adapter and a microUSB cable for power.

Adobe has announced that the first Beta of Flash Player 10 is now available for everyone to download. It comes with al kinds of really nice features and improvements, but the best thing that we’ll probably see come out of this is the newly available 3D effects. One example that they gave of where this could be useful is taking 2D images and arranging them in a rotating 3D carousel similar to that seen to the right. Making your own Cover Flow clone wouldn’t take too long either then.
Concerned about performance? According to Adobe they are pushing some of the graphical processing onto the user’s video card so that the processor can be used for rendering special effects:
One of the best things about the creative features now available in Adobe Flash Player 10 beta is that they won’t slow down performance. With Flash Player 10 beta, developers can enable SWF content to render through the memory bandwidth and computational horsepower of the GPU hardware processor, freeing up the CPU to do more – such as render 3D content and intricate effects, and process complex business logic.

It will probably be a little while before we start to see developers making use of the new technology offered in Flash Player 10, but once a majority of users have upgraded the developers will be all over this like a kid in a candy store. 😉

Avant Window Navigator (Awn) 0.2 was just released, and there is no doubt that it is one of the best looking docks I’ve seen on any operating system. There is a video below that shows all of the cool icon effects, including the sweet reflection. Before we get into that let’s take a look at what’s new:

If you are just the slightest bit familiar with Linux then I am sure that you have heard of XGL. It is what adds all of the realistic 3D effects to the windows that you drag around and the virtual desktops that you switch between. Of course, one of the most popular features is probably the 3D cube for switching between your virtual desktops.
There is a new Firefox extension in town and it is called Tab Effect (the screenshot above is from the extension, not XGL). With the assistance of a little DirectX 8 (and beyond) it is able to provide transitional effects when switching between your tabs. Now it isn’t exactly like XGL where you can manually rotate a cube for switching between tabs, but the animation makes it look like you are rotating a cube each time you switch tabs. Honestly, this is the most amazing visual effect that I have ever seen in Firefox. If you’re one of those people who doesn’t like a little extra “eye candy” then this extension won’t be for you…it doesn’t make you more productive or add any useful features.
So now for the downside. I’m not sure if this will happen for everyone, but whenever I tried to create a new blank tab Firefox would crash if I was running this extension. If I was just opening a link to a site in a new tab it would be fine, but that is still quite a huge drawback for me. The extension was just released yesterday so there are a lot of kinks that needed to be worked out (and reading through the comments confirms that), but I’m sure it will continue to be developed since it is a new extension. Not to mention that this could put Firefox ahead of other browsers in terms of visual effects.
Once it stabilizes I will definitely be adding this to my small collection of extensions!

As the Ubuntu community continues to grow quite rapidly, so does the number of resources being made available. If the Ubuntu Forums just isn’t enough for you then checkout the new Full Circle Magazine. It is 100% free and has a lot of awesome content.
The “Issue #0” of the magazine is offered as a free PDF download, or for those of you who don’t want to open a PDF application I went ahead and converted the entire magazine to a single image. Besides being available in English, it is also available in Russian, Spanish, Galician, Dutch, and Indonesian. If you’re interested in providing a translation please see this site.
The first issue is 17 pages long, and takes a look back at Ubuntu’s history over the last few years. About halfway through they reach Ubuntu 7.04 (the latest version) and take a more in-depth look into the new features that were introduced, including Desktop Effects and the new games.
Issue #1 is being worked on right now, and will be approximately 44 pages in length. I’m pretty anxious to get my hands on it to see what all they have to say, but in the meantime be sure to checkout our extended articles regarding Ubuntu:
