We usually associate smartphones in news reporting with citizen journalism, not full-time journalists. However, a confluence of events has just led to the BBC’s Nick Garnett becoming a pioneer for mobile broadcasting on the professional level. When a shortage of satellite trucks prevented Garnett from getting the usual video feed for the BBC News Channel, he successfully arranged the British network’s first live video interview piped through a smartphone. The key, Garnett says, was Dejero’s Live+ iPhone app: while live streaming apps are already commonplace, Dejero’s let him merge the 3G and WiFi connections together, getting enough bandwidth to make a TV-worthy broadcast in a country where LTE is still very new. Combined with some very ad hoc staging and help from the BBC’s technical teams, the coordination resulted in a surprisingly smooth interview about flooding in northeastern England with relatively few hints of the extra-tiny recording equipment involved. It’s unlikely that broadcast crews will reach to their pockets for live coverage solutions before anything else, but the BBC is actively testing Dejero and other apps that could make smartphones as much a part of the field reporting arsenal as a camcorder and an eye for a good story. You may have since forgotten, but today was the original kick-off day for Nokia World 2012. With the big show canceled and the devices already launched, we instead opted to drop by the smartphone maker’s headquarters just outside Helsinki. We’re spending three days here in Finland, meeting with executives to get an inside look at the company’s next-generation smartphone lineup. Our first face-to-face is with Nokia’s chief executive himself, Stephen Elop, who has generously offered up 30 minutes to answer your questions. Because of the time constraints, we won’t be able to accommodate every request, but we’ll certainly do our best.

We are live at Nokia’s special event in New York, and as you know, the early bird gets the worm. We do wonder just what kind of “worms” we are able to catch this time around, so follow our live blog for a blow-by-blow action at the turn of events later on. TomTom is announcing HD Traffic 6.0, an upgrade to its live traffic service that’s reportedly 90 percent better at identifying roadworks and 65 percent better at spotting closed roads. At the same time, the company’s teaming up with BMW to offer GoLive device integration with selected 1, 3, X1 and X3-series vehicles. Pop down to your local dealer, and a specially designed mount will integrate the gear with your car’s entertainment and audio systems, muting directions when you’re on a call and so-forth. Both are available from today, with HD Traffic expanding to a further 23 countries before the end of the year.

Have you ever visited a state fair in the US? Picture the fairgrounds — perhaps enlarged several fold — filled to the brim with ultra-slim televisions, giant smartphones, tablets, laptops and enough washers and dryers to keep the entire population of Germany’s wardrobe squeaky clean. That’s IFA. There may not be any deep-fried Oreos at this Messe (though you will find plenty of Brezels and Bier), but there’s more than enough to keep us entertained for a full week, and then some. The fun kicks off tomorrow afternoon with Sony’s annual press conference, followed by Samsung Unpacked where we expect to see a Galaxy S III-like successor to last year’s blockbuster Note. Then chaos ensues, when the two dozen exhibition halls open to the public, and tens of thousands of curious consumers mix with industry reps and journalists, pushing and shoving their way to the hottest gadgets from every category, be it high-end home theater or personal grooming (read: electric toothbrush/water flosser duos). Rest assured that we’ll focus our efforts on the former, and you can stay on top of all the news as it happens using our “ifa2012” tag.
