300 Mbps LTE Advanced Networks To Be Launched By Korean Carriers In 2014

Mobile internet has rapidly evolved within the last decade. One can’t even imagine that there was a time before 3G not too long ago, when downloading the simplest of files on a mobile device could end up taking a lot of time. Much of the developed world has now become accustomed to 3G, 4G LTE in most cases, having up to 75 Mbps speeds on mobile devices. Though later this year it would be nothing compared to what South Korean carriers are up to. SK Telecom and LG Uplus are both expected to launch their 3band LTE-Advanced service later this year, offering subscribers speeds up to an eye-watering 300 Mbps.

This new service will be based on carrier aggregation, to achieve higher mobile internet speeds multiple bands are combined, SK Telecom has combined one 20 MHz bandwidth and two 10 MHz bandwidths, it is already conducting tests on this new service. LG Uplus, South Korea’s third largest carrier, has also gone down a similar road. This new service is set to offer speeds as high as 300 Mbps, almost four times faster than conventional LTE, and even faster than 150 Mbps LTE-Advanced and 225 Mbps wider-bandwidth LTE-Advanced. Both carriers are expected to launch this service later in 2014, while SK Telecom is already prepping up to showcase speeds of up to 450 Mbps at Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona next month.

Speculation About iPhone 5S LTE-A Support Mounts

Speculation About iPhone 5S LTE A Support Mounts

Apple has finally sent out the invites for a media event on September 10th, it will be unveiling the much awaited iPhones. A lot has been rumored about the company’s upcoming smartphones. The iPhone 5S will be one of two models that are expected to be unveiled. It probably won’t have any major design changes, it is only expected to come with major changes under the hood. LTE-Advanced support has been rumored a couple of times for iPhone 5S, an announcement today by Deutsche Telekom is seen as a hint by some towards this possibility.

A few months back it was said that Apple was having discussions with SK Telecom in South Korea. SK Telecom launched its LTE-A network earlier this year, Samsung’s “faster” Galaxy S4 became the first device to support it. The discussions were said to revolve around the possibility of iPhone 5S supporting the network. Deutsche Telekom launched its very own LTE-A network today and confirmed that Samsung will be offering a compatible version. The announcement mentioned that other manufacturers will offer compatible smartphones “at the end of September.” The iPhone 5S is expected to be released in September as well. This vague statement doesn’t actually say that the LTE-A capable iPhone 5S is going to be launched, but the rumor mill seems to be confirmed that its a hint. What do you think?

We’ve been hearing rumors that the iPhone 5S and LG G2 will come with fingerprint scanners, but they no longer will be the first smartphones to include such a feature, as Pantech has beaten the crowd to the punch. The company launched the Vega LTE-A in Korea, and it comes with the fingerprint scanner, as […]

Pantech Vega LTE-A flaunts fingerprint recognition, 5.6-inch 1080p display

Few phones can take advantage of South Korea’s freshly-launched LTE-Advanced networks, but Pantech’s just given speed demons a new option: the Vega LTE-A. Though full details haven’t trickled out from overseas just yet, the available specs paint an impressive picture. A 5.6-inch full HD display graces the front of the handset while a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor helps the device run Android 4.2.2. What’s more, it’s toting an area for fingerprint recognition on its back. Come mid-August, folks in the hardware maker’s homeland will be able to pick up the handset for use on SK Telecom’s network. If the LTE-A variant of the Galaxy S 4 doesn’t strike your fancy, Pantech’s newest piece of kit might just be worth a look.

LG U+ launches LTE-Advanced network, sets sights on SK Telecom

LG Uplus is second in the world to launch LTEAdvanced network

Not long after South Korea’s SK Telecom launched the world’s first LTE-Advanced network, its homegrown rival, LG U+, will be rolling out LTE-Advanced to its customers as well, according to Yonhap News. There’s no word on what phones the new network will support, though we won’t be surprised if LG’s own Optimus G successor will be one of them. Now pardon us as we figure out a way to move to South Korea, as that’s the only place to get a taste of the zippy speeds right now.

iPhone 5S LTE-A tipped as SK Telecom reportedly pushes Apple for speed

Apple’s iPhone 5S, expected to launch later this year, will support LTE-Advanced sources reportedly at Korean carrier SK Telecom claim, theoretically doubling the smartphone’s download speeds versus the current iPhone 5. “SK Telecom is approaching Apple to put out LTE-A technology on the upcoming iPhone 5S” an unnamed source at the carrier told The Korea

Apple ‘in negotiations’ to launch new iPhone with LTE-Advanced in South Korea

Apple 'in negotiations' to launch new iPhone with LTEAdvanced in South Korea

This will come too late to be a world first, if it happens at all, but an unnamed insider at SK Telecom claims his company is in talks with Apple to bring out a South Korean version of the “upcoming iPhone 5S” with support for LTE-Advanced. The official, who was quoted by The Korea Times, makes it clear that SK Telecom made the first approach, but says the two parties are now “in the middle of negotiations”, implying Apple was receptive to the idea. An LTE-A iPhone could theoretically double the download speed of a regular LTE iPhone 5 in ideal conditions, thanks in large part to carrier aggregation technology that enables downloads over multiple radio channels at the same time. The Korea Times also mentions that Apple might use Qualcomm to deliver LTE-A, but that would likely mean a Qualcomm modem specifically, rather than the Snapdragon 800 used in the South Korean Galaxy S 4, since these days Apple prefers its processors to be homegrown.
