T-Mobile has started a new LTE roll-out, aiming to upgrade half of its existing 2G/EDGE spectrum to 4G by the end of 2014, along with an ambitious roadmap to use … Continue reading
Sprint’s Chairman was recently quoted as saying 4G LTE connectivity in the US is “horrible”, and we’re not sure if it is a coincidence because around the same time, a certain piece of technology called the pCell was announced which will supposedly improve phone reception, connectivity issues, reduce battery strain, and at the same time increase data speeds that are apparently 1,000 faster than 4G, according to a report by Business Insider.
The device is made by a company called Artemis and basically what it does is that it will help to reduce the need for big, power-hungry, and not to mention expensive cell towers with small devices like the pWave, pictured above. What makes this different from cell towers is that they can be placed anywhere, versus cell towers that have to be placed at a certain distance from one another to prevent interference. (more…)

Back in October 2013, Microsoft launched their brand new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets. Both tablets offered up WiFi connectivity but at the same time, we’re sure that many wouldn’t mind if the tablets came with an LTE option. After all not everywhere provides WiFi and tethering to your phone is a good and quick way to use up your data. The good news was that during an AMA on Reddit, the Surface team promised that Surface 2 tablets with LTE and GPS connectivity will be launched in 2014, and the good news is that it looks like we’re one step closer. This is thanks to a recent FCC filing where an LTE-enabled Surface 2 tablet was spotted.
Given that Surface boss, Panos Panay, stated that the Surface 2 with LTE will be arriving on AT&T, we can only assume that the model spotted at the FCC will be destined for AT&T’s networks. As for other countries, it seems that Microsoft has partnered with Vodafone so if you wanted your Surface 2 with LTE, you’d have to head on over to Vodafone for it. There’s no telling when the LTE version will be launched, or if we will see a Surface Pro 2 with LTE, but we reckon it’s still good news nonetheless. Hopefully we will learn more about the tablet’s availability soon, if not at Microsoft’s Build conference which will take place in April.

Broadcom has recently demonstrated that its smartphone modem can communicate with a “live” 300 Mbps LTE commercial network. Although demonstrations using a similar technology have been done in the past, Broadcom says that it is the first to do so on a “live” network (in Finland) which means that a cell tower used to serve actual wireless customers was upgraded and used for the demonstration. The test device itself was only yards away from the tower to achieve the best speeds, but this is not unusual for that kind of demonstration.
I recently met with Scott McGregor (Broadcom’s CEO) and for him, this milestone shows that Broadcom has basically caught up to Qualcomm over the past two years since both companies have now announced their Cat6 LTE support within a week from one another. At this point in time, these are the only two companies that I know of that have reached this stage of LTE support. (more…)
