It’s been just half a year since Nokia revealed its first Windows Phone 8 device, and we’ve already got another flagship to review. The Lumia 925 marks a departure in design for Nokia — it looks nothing like its predecessors, barring an expanse of screen and some capacitive Windows buttons. This time around, the phone is housed in an aluminum frame, making it Nokia’s first metal smartphone since those heady Symbian days. This, alongside some hardware repositioning and (minor) specification changes has been enough for the Lumia 925 to weigh notably less than its 920 forebear — and we think it’s enough to feel in your hand. As we juggled the two Windows Phones ahead of this review, our first impressions were that the 925 was also much easier to hold, despite only a negligible difference in thickness.

Arriving in three comparatively restrained monochrome hues (white, black and grey), Nokia’s returned to OLED for its display tech, although it’s the same 1,280 x 768 resolution as the rest of the 920 series and includes the company’s anti-reflective screen technology for good measure. Its new Smart Camera app debuts on the Lumia 925, standing alongside the stock app and offering up some interesting new picture-taking options.
Otherwise, it’s an awful lot like the Lumia 920, at least on paper: there’s the same lauded 8.7-megapixel camera sensor (with an extra lens element), the same dual-core 1.5GHz processor and the same OS (albeit with some beta goodies). Nokia reckons that the phone is geared towards a different buyer than those who bought the Lumia 920, but alongside Verizon’s recent US-only Lumia 928, is there enough to get fans that skipped on last year’s model to buy this time around? And is there enough to persuade you not to hold out for what’s on the horizon?

At a UK briefing for Nokia’s incoming Lumia 925, the company revealed that it’s continuing to deepen its relationship with Microsoft. Nokia UK’s Ray Haddow said that it was “working even closer” with Redmond and that we can expect to see the fruits of this pairing “in the next few weeks.” While we’re not sure what that will entail just yet (and we’re already expecting to see some beta software functionality land on our review model), we’re hoping to see some new features from the team-up. Better still, we’ve just received our very own Lumia 925 to test, so expect a review very soon.
Update: As the meeting progresses, we’ve heard another small tidbit out of Nokia related to this collaboration. It appears that reps have been emphasizing the marketing aspects of this pairup, suggesting the two companies will work together in advertising and increasing Nokia’s visibility. We’ll update this post with more info if we get more clarification on exactly what we can expect.

While chat apps excel at adding contacts from the online world, they don’t cope so well with real life — reciting and typing screen names isn’t very elegant. Nokia is bringing back some of those social graces with its Nokia Chat 1.1 beta, which revolves around NFC transfers. If both friends own NFC-equipped Lumia phones, they can tap to exchange their own details, other contacts or even the app itself. It’s also easier to share locations: contacts with Lumias will see a Here Maps-based preview of any given place. These additions don’t make as much sense outside of an all-Nokia ecosystem, but there’s certainly enough for existing users to upgrade at the source link.

We knew Vodafone would be adding the recently unveiled Nokia Lumia 925 to its smartphone lineup in the United Kingdom, but today the carrier’s officially diving into how it plans to sell it to potential suitors. The best attraction would appear to be the all-you-can-have calls / messages with 2GB of data, which will cost you £34 per month over two years. If that particular offering isn’t for you, however, Vodafone UK also has something for those who need a little more web access on the go: £39 for 24 months gets you the same unlimited deal on voice and text but with 4GB of data — and it’s worth mentioning both plans won’t require any cash upfront for the device. The sleek Lumia 925 is set to be up for pre-order starting today, and Vodafone’s really hoping the 32GB black model will be a crucial detail in your decision to go its way instead of, say, O2. So, what will it be?

While the HTC One appears as a Google Edition and rumors persist of a Verizon model popping up soon, an image has appeared today that suggests an “M4″ model might not be far behind. While the HTC One is part of a hero smartphone strategy that has HTC fulfilling their aim to centralize their aim in one ideal design, the M4 has appeared in system code and here, today, as a fully realized model – albeit in a blurry photo, too.
The similarities between this smaller machine and the original HTC One – if this photo ends up being legitimate – begin with the units basic look. You’ve still got one large glass pane up front, silver speaker grilles above and below, and the back, HTC, home button arrangement. The display has been suggested to be coming in at a slightly more conservative size than the HTC One’s, here at 4.3-inches with 720p resolution.
This machine has been tipped to be coming with a plastic rim, speaker grilles that are a bit less wide than the original, and another “UltraPixel” camera on the back. This release would continue to work with the newest version of HTC’s Sense user interface and would have a processor of unknown made and power under the hood.
And the image certainly does seem to be too good to be true, doesn’t it? It’s quite possible that we’re looking at a collection of hand-crafted forgeries here, just as possible as it is that the entire image has been photoshopped and amped-up from previous releases.
Also appearing in this photo is a massive Sony device rumored earlier this year as an oversized “Togari” model, complete with 1080p display at 6.44-inches. This machine has an aesthetic not unlike that of the Sony XPERIA Z, mind you, but its ultra-thinness does seem a bit suspect.
Then there’s that massive Nokia device in the background. While it could just as easily be a sort of flattened-out HTC Windows Phone 8X, it’s suggested by the leakster himself that it’s a 1080p Lumia from Nokia. This image also suggests that Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 will be allowing a third column of live tiles in the near future – getting closer, and closer, and closer to icons the size of those on other operating systems.
