Nokia Lumia 928 billboard can’t wait for official announcement to trumpet low-light camera performance

Nokia Lumia 928 billboard can't wait for official announcement, trumpets low-light camera

It’s not uncommon for an as yet announced phone to pop up on Twitter, or via an insider leak. But a physical billboard? That takes some doing. If this image — spotted out in the wild — is to be believed, Nokia’s Lumia 928 is as real as the day is long. The Verizon handset shown certainly fits the images we’ve already seen, and the low-light boast will stoke the coals of any Xenon or PureView rumors for sure. However, this spot is hardly Times Square, so until we see something a little more concrete, Lumia fans on Big Red will have to keep the faith with that 822.

Nokia Lumia EOS And Catwalk Release Rumored Between May And August

Nokia Lumia EOS And Catwalk Release Rumored Between May And August

More rumors regarding Nokia Lumia EOS smartphone started coming in last month, it is believed that the Finnish manufacturer’s next flagship smartphone will have a 41 megapixel camera. It was reported back then that Nokia was testing two versions of the EOS, one with a quadcore and one with a dualcore processor. The EOS is said to be an AT&T exclusive for 1-3 months before being released globally. The ‘Catwalk’ Lumia smartphone was reportedly shown to a select few at an inviting only briefing at MWC 2013. This is device is said to be the successor of Lumia 920 with same internal specs but a thinner and lighter profile. Leaked images of Nokia Lumia Catwalk suggest that it will be fashioned out of aluminium. It was also rumored that Nokia will release Catwalk on 15th May.

An unverified source claims that the months of May and August will be exciting for Windows Phone fans as a number of manufacturers will be releasing new device. The Nokia EOS and Catwalk will apparently be released in these months, they would reportedly not have built-in wireless charging though covers will be available for this purpose. Also rumored to release are two versions of HTC Tiara, the Samsung Cronus LTE and Huawei’s Ascend WQ 5. Since this source isn’t known for its authenticity, it is advised that you remain skeptical about this release time frame.

Nokia Lumia 520 review: does Nokia need another budget Windows Phone?

Nokia Lumia 520 review does Nokia need another budget Windows Phone

Oh, for an easy life. Sometimes it’d be nice to just read a phone’s spec sheet, compare prices and make a decision. In a number of ways, the Nokia Lumia 520 looks like just the type of handset where this ought to be possible: it has the same reliable internals and happy design language that have already proven their worth in the Lumia 620, but it makes a couple of sacrifices for the sake of its £115 pay-as-you-go price tag in the UK — which undercuts the higher model by a good £30-£50 depending on where you shop. It’s even cheaper in the US, where a $150 Lumia 521 variant (not the one reviewed here) is scheduled for general availability on T-Mobile starting tomorrow.

These sacrifices seem straightforward enough, and they include things that many smartphone users may barely notice, such as the absence of a front-facing camera, camera flash module and NFC. The problem is that the specs are never the full story. Like any phone, the Lumia 520 comes with a few surprises. Read on and we’ll try to root them out.

Nokia Lumia event inked in for mid-May

Nokia is preparing to unveil what looks to be the company’s next Lumia smartphone during an event that they will host on May 14 in London. If recent rumors are on track, it could be the EOS that we’ve been hearing a lot about, which is said to be a Windows Phone device that packs in a PureView 41-megapixel camera.

The invite reads, “The Nokia Lumia story continues,” and to the left it reads, “See what’s next” in big bold letters that are slightly hidden, almost like a stereogram. We’re not sure what that specifically is all about, but we do know from the invite that Nokia will be showing off a new Lumia device at the event.

We’ve heard that the new smartphone will sport an aluminum outer shell complete with a waterproof nano coating from P2i, similar to that of the technology that we saw at CES back in January from the startup company. The phone is said to be codenamed “Catwalk,” although an official moniker for the phones is not yet known, nor are details imminent.

Apparently, the secret phone was at Mobile World Congress back in February, and only a handful of analysts were able to feast their eyes on the new toy, but solid details are yet to be revealed. There’s also the chance that they’ll release the Lumia 928 on Verizon, which we’ve been hearing about for some time now.

Nokia Unveiling New Lumia On May 14

Nokia Unveiling New Lumia On May 14

Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop hinted a new Nokia Lumia should be expected to be announced ‘later this quarter‘ a few weeks ago, with a rumor of the device possibly being unveiled today. That rumor turned out to be false as we have yet to hear of any announcement for Nokia’s future Lumia, but we did receive an invite for an event happening on May 14 in London.

The invite has the words “The Nokia Lumia Story Continues” displayed along with the date, location and Nokia’s logo. The left side has a hidden message that you may not see at a quick glance, but staring at it for several hours will result in seeing the words “see what’s next.” Since Nokia isn’t outright saying what they plan on announcing, we could only assume it could be a number of rumored handsets such as the Lumia 928, Nokia Catwalk or whatever its 41-megapixel camera equipped smartphone turns out to be. Considering the event is expected to last for 6 hours, it could very well be all three devices.

Nokia hosting Lumia event on May 14th, invites us to ‘see what’s next’

Nokia Lumia event set for May 14th, invites us to 'see what's next'

The next couple months are gearing up to be pretty busy, and Nokia’s joining the fun with a press event on May 14th. The Finnish company is putting out a rather hefty teaser to get us intrigued, stating that the Nokia Lumia story continues, and we’ll get to “see what’s next.” The timing of this new device is rather curious, given the fact that the flagship Lumia phones typically get shown off later in the fall. Is this the rumored 41MP PureView Windows Phone we’ve been hoping for ever since the 808 came out? Perhaps we’ll see the Lumia 928 that we hear is supposed to hit Verizon in May (though London would be an odd and unlikely locale for a US-only handset unveiling). Could it simply be a lower-end device along the lines of the 520 or 620? We doubt that as well, but either way, we’ll be there to get the scoop as Mr. Elop (we’d expect) shows off the latest Windows Phone coming out of Espoo.

Verizon’s Lumia lifeboat could buoy Nokia

The mobile device and data carrier Verizon is often considered the one to beat in the United States, making this week’s report of a possible exclusive release with Nokia a ray of positive light for the smartphone manufacturer. Sources have mentioned the possibility of a device coming to Verizon in the very near future by the name Nokia Lumia 928, one we’ve heard rumors of before. This device would take the successes of the Nokia Lumia 920 and bring a Verizon-tuned setup to the market with 4G LTE, aiming for a win with Windows Phone 8 while the majority of the devices carried by this top US mobile provider run iOS or Android.

This report comes from sources speaking with Bloomberg and have asked to remain anonymous as final negotiations will remain secret until next month. The Nokia Lumia 928 is said to be a re-tuning of the Nokia Lumia 920, a device Nokia has claimed as its hero smartphone through the beginning of 2013. This new device would work with a similar 4.5-inch touchscreen, 8 megapixel camera, and the ability to charge wirelessly.

The device that Nokia and Verizon are said to be using to solidify a deal between them will likely follow the metal body rumors reported several times since the international mobile device convention IFA held earlier this year in Barcelona. It was during that convention that Nokia revealed several new smartphones with low price points including the Lumia 520 and 720, both of which use Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system.

Have a peek at the timeline below for more appearances in the recent past of the device at the center of the deal being tipped here today. Will it be Nokia’s time to glow brightly amongst the otherwise midrange Windows Phone 8 devices working with the big red carrier? Or will this deal fizzle before the next wave of Windows Phone 8 devices arrive later this year?

Verizon To Offer Nokia Lumia 928 From Next Month, Reports Bloomberg

nokia-lumia-928

Nokia looks like it’s hoping to turn up the volume of its Windows Phone-based Lumia smartphones in the U.S. by signing another carrier to its cause. Bloomberg is reporting that Nokia and Verizon have struck a deal that will see the carrier offer a forthcoming flagship, the Lumia 928, starting from next month. Neither the deal nor the device have been made public by Nokia or Verizon but Bloomberg said two people familiar with the situation have confirmed the impending launch.

Bloomberg’s report follows previous leaks in which the Lumia 928 was spotted in the FCC’s and Verizon’s systems. An apparent image of the handset was also leaked earlier this month. When approached for comment a Nokia spokesman told TechCrunch it does not comment on rumour and speculation.

If the Verizon deal is true, the Lumia 928 will be the first high end Lumia the carrier has ranged (it does already carry the mid-range Nokia Lumia 822). In the U.S. Lumia devices such as the flagship Lumia 920 have been exclusively carried by AT&T to date. Getting another major carrier — Verizon has some 100 million subscribers – on board with a flagship is vital for the once Mighty Finn to try to capture more cachet, as well as marketshare.

According to Bloomberg’s sources, the Lumia device that will launch on Verizon will have a metal body, a 4.5-inch touch screen, an 8-megapixel camera and wireless charging. Earlier rumours have suggested it will have a polycarbonate body, however, while the internals have generally been expected to remain the same as the Lumia 920.

North America has traditionally been a weak market for Nokia — historically, back in the Symbian days, but also since Nokia’s Windows Phone reboot. But in its Q1 results last week, the region was the only market in which Nokia saw a small increase in sales (up by 9%) compared to last year. Nokia reported selling a total of 5.6 million Lumias globally in the quarter.

Kantar stats we covered earlier this month indicate that Windows Phone as a whole — so not just Nokia devices but also HTC, Samsung etc — has moved up into a distant third place in the US smartphone market, behind the two leaders: Android and iOS, suggesting the platform is slowly building some regional momentum. That momentum may have helped convinced Verizon to take a punt on a Lumia flagship.

We’ve been closely following all Nokia Lumia 928 updates over the past couple of weeks. This particular smartphone will be a Verizon exclusive and will be compatible with its 4G LTE network. Most of its specifications are believed to be similar to those of the Lumia 920. Though it is expected to be marginally lighter and thinner than the 920. Recent reports indicate that the Lumia 928 might be announced on April 25th. Infamous Twitter users @evleaks has now leaked press shots of the 928 in both black and white. This particular Twitter user has a very solid track record of releasing press shots of devices that haven’t even been announced.
