GateKeeper Locks Your PC Automatically, Perfect for the Lazy and Security Conscious
Posted in: Today's ChiliAn interesting new product is on Kickstarter that those who often lose things and are too lazy to lock their computer each time they walk away from it will appreciate. The product is called GateKeeper and it is a combination of a Bluetooth locating device and a proximity lock.
The proximity feature will automatically lock and unlock your PC or Mac when you walk away from it. That will keep your machine from sitting unprotected until your screen saver password protection kicks in.
The Bluetooth locator feature is just what it sounds like. It is a feature that will set off an alarm on your smartphone if you walk away from something you have tagged like a smartphone or bag. A pledge of $35(USD) or more will get you one GateKeeper this July. Fundraising ends at 11am CDT tomorrow, so you’ll want to move quickly if you want one.

Terminal Alternative for Mac
Posted in: Today's ChiliThis article was written on February 29, 2012 by CyberNet.
I spend quite a bit of time living in the terminal on my Mac, and so I was rightfully excited when I came across the free app called iTerm 2 that squashes some of the things I wanted the built-in app to offer. One of the things I really needed was a search feature to quickly find things from past commands I’ve run, and iTerm 2 does that very well.
Here is an overview of other features in iTerm 2:
- Split Panes
Divide a tab up into multiple panes, each one of which shows a different session. You can slice vertically and horizontally and create any number of panes in any imaginable arrangement. - Search
iTerm2 comes with a robust find-on-page feature. The UI stays out of the way. All matches are immediately highlighted. Even regular expression support is offered! - Autocomplete
Just type the start of any word that has ever appeared in your window and then Cmd-; will pop open a window with suggestions. The word you’re looking for is usually on top of the list! - Paste History
Paste history lets you revisit recently copied or pasted text. You can even opt to have the history saved to disk so it will never be lost. - Instant Replay
Instant replay lets you travel back in time. It’s like TiVo for your terminal! - Full Screen
Work distraction-free with absolutely nothing on the screen but your terminal. The tab bar can be opened by holding down cmd. - Growl Support
- Exposé Tabs
Like OS X’s Exposé feature, iTerm2 shows all your tabs on one screen. Better yet, you can search through them all at once. Go ahead and open as many tabs as you want–you can always find what you’re looking for.
When you stack those features on top of all the configuration options it has this becomes a must-have app for any geek living in a terminal window.

Microsoft has been such a dominating force in the computer industry that it’s only a matter of time for some worthy competitors to start coming forward. The first time we really saw this happen was with Firefox taking a large chunk of Microsoft Internet Explorer’s market share, and it appears as though Apple might be stepping up to the plate in big ways.
Some recent surveys were done by Paul Carton over at ChangeWave, and some interesting results emerged from the 4,427 consumer responses and 2,204 corporate responses. Here’s a quick summary of what they found:
Consumers:
- 6% plan to buy a desktop in the next 90 days
- 8% plan to buy a laptop in the next 90 days
- 28% of those looking to buy a desktop in the next 90 days plan to buy an Apple
- 31% of those looking to buy a laptop in the next 90 days plan to buy an Apple
Corporate:
- 70% plan to buy a desktop in the next quarter
- 73% plan to buy a laptop in the next quarter
- 6% of those looking to buy a desktop in the next quarter plan to buy an Apple
- 7% of those looking to buy a laptop in the next quarter plan to buy an Apple
- Operating System satisfaction:
- 53% of Mac OS X Leopard users are very satisfied
- 44% of Linux users are very satisfied
- 40% of Windows XP Professional users are very satisfied
- 8% of Windows Vista Business users are very satisfied
On the consumer front Apple is obviously pushing the right buttons, but they still have to do some work to appeal to the corporate world. What do you think is keeping businesses from using Mac’s? Is it the expensive hardware, the need to dual boot, or something else? It’s interesting though that the most satisfied corporate users are those running Leopard, and yet they aren’t getting their foot in the door at most businesses.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Titanfall was released a couple of days ago and for a while it seemed like it was exclusive to Microsoft’s Windows and Xbox platforms. However the good news is that if you’re a Mac gamer, you might be pleased to learn that the game could be making its way onto your computers in the future, although no specific dates were mentioned.
A Mac version of the game has been discussed in the past, although the details about the game remained a mystery. However Respawn Entertainment’s Vince Zampella has recently taken to Twitter in which he revealed that Titanfall would be getting a Mac release down the road, and that the developers are currently talking to Aspyr about bringing it onto Mac.
