Send And Receive Snapchats On Mac With Snapped

Snapchat, the service that lets people send self-destructing photos and videos, has become very popular over the past year and a half. Sure it has seen its fair share of ups and downs, such as the security breach that compromised phone numbers and usernames of more than 4.6 million users, but it has reportedly peaked the interest for two behemoths. Google and Facebook were both reportedly trying to acquire the company, offering as much as $4 billion, both of them were said to have been turned down. As Snapchat continues to grow, it hasn’t said if it has any plans of bringing the service over to desktop computers. If you’ve been wondering about the possibility of being able to use Snapchat on a Mac, then you’re in luck. Snapped is a new app that lets you do just that.

Mac Sales Experience Increase Last Quarter While PC Sales Take A Dip

Mac Sales Experience Increase Last Quarter While PC Sales Take A DipAs most of you guys know, Apple’s Mac computers don’t quite have the same market share as their Windows competitors. There are many reasons for it, such as Windows computers being more affordable, more familiar, and also having more software available for it that is used by professionals around the world. However Apple’s Mac computers are slowly gaining traction, thanks to a research by Gartner where it was found that Apple’s Mac computer sales have actually increased by 28.5% in the last quarter, while PC sales actually found themselves going down and have actually shrunk by 7.5%!

Of course given the PC’s market share and the Mac’s market share, the PC is still very much in the lead, although it does look like Apple is playing catchup, albeit slowly. It was found that as far as PC vendors were concerned, companies such as Toshiba and HP saw themselves making a loss of 13.9% and 10.3% respectively, while companies such as Dell and Lenovo found their sales going up a modest 7.4% and 3.5% respectively. Some are blaming tablets as one of the reasons that PC sales have gone down. With tablets being generally cheaper and portable, those buying PCs for simple use, such as watching movies and surfing the web, might turn to a tablet instead.

There’s no telling if Apple’s Mac computers will be able to continue this momentum. It is possible that the surge in sales could be attributed to the holiday season, which was admittedly true as far as tablets were concerned.

Optimize JPG and PNG Images on a Mac

This article was written on October 17, 2012 by CyberNet.

    Optimize images jpg png

When it comes to uploading images to a website you always want to try and make sure the file sizes are as low as possible without compromising on quality. Sometimes that is easier said than done, but with the free ImageOptim for the Mac it’s a breeze.

ImageOptim can handle a variety of different image formats including PNG, JPG, and GIF. In general the file size savings depends on the image and how much it is able to compress it, and if you jump into the preferences for ImageOptim you can configure the settings available for the images. By default it will set the quality of JPG images to 90%, and so you might start to see some minor artifacts in the images caused by the app if you don’t tweak the settings at all. You can configure it to retain the full quality of the images though, and only have it try to reduce the JPG sizes by removing things like EXIF data and comments found in them.

When it comes to PNG images, however, they can often be significantly optimized without any loss of quality. How does it do that? One example the website mentions is that it will convert images from being a 24-bit PNG to 8-bit PNG with full alpha channel, but it will only do so when it won’t affect the quality of the image. It also runs the PNG images through several other image optimization tools to get the size down as much as possible.

New Mac Leopard Dock on Windows

This article was written on September 20, 2007 by CyberNet.

    Mac Leopard Dock on Windows

It seems as though there are some big fans of the Mac OS Leopard Dock that will be launching later this year with the new operating system. Well, they might be Leopard fans, but they’re running Windows. 🙂

I’m talking about a developer who took the latest Beta version of the free RK Launcher application, and bundled skins, icons, and plugins together in a single package that give this Dock clone a true Leopard feel to it. Here’s the result of the hard work:

    • 7 different languages: English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Turkish
    • Integrated KKMenu simulates the Stacks feature on the Leopard Dock (pictured above). Here’s what the configuration of the Stacks looks like:
Mac Leopard Stacks on Windows Editor
    • Over 175 wonderfully reflective icons are included for the most popular apps
    • Screen capture utility that’s actually pretty useful for taking fast screenshots
    • Mac-like calendar docklet
    • Shutdown manager so that you don’t have to go to the Start Menu to turn your computer off or restart it
    • Address book

I tried this out, and I have to say that I’m really impressed with all the eye candy it has to offer. If you’ve been itching to get your hands on a free Mac-like dock for Windows then I don’t think it could be any easier than this!

You can download the Leopard Inspired RK Launcher (for Windows XP/Vista) in this forum (no registration required), and here is a list of what’s included with the 50MB download.

Over A Billion Android Devices Expected To Ship This Year

Over A Billion Android Devices Expected To Ship This Year

Android is everywhere, commonly in our smartphones and tablets, and its slowly making its way into our cars and even onto our heads. In fact, recent market stats from Kantar Worldpanel reveal that Android’s share in the global smartphone market has surged almost nine percent in the last three months alone. Research group Gartner predicted today that in 2014, more than one billion Android devices will be shipped to consumers in all parts of the globe, registering a 26 percent year-on-year growth. The research group expects to see strongest demand in emerging markets.

Gartner also predicts how iOS and Macs will perform this year, over 344 million iOS and Mac machines are expected to be shipped in 2014, registering a 28 percent year-on-year increase when compared to the number of devices shipped last year. Furthermore, it is also predicted that Microsoft’s Windows OS will find its way into 360 million new devices as opposed to 328 million new devices in 2013. Global shipments of all devices are expected to cross 2.48 billion, climbing 7.6 percent year-over-year. Analysts at the research group believe smartphone sales will continue to increase in the new year, though the focus will move away from high-end smartphones to mid-range models, which carry much more appeal in many emerging markets around the world.
