The MacBook Air’s incredibly thin form factor is made possible largely in part by its use of a solid-state drive—or SSD—instead of a more traditional and thicker hard drive with moving parts. The downside is that SSDs are still considerably smaller in capacity than traditional hard drives, but PNY now has an easy way to boost your MBA’s storage by taking advantage of the laptop’s integrated SD card slot.

Let’s face it, while the MacBook Air is certainly a decent computer that is fast and portable, it can hardly be called a gaming machine. In fact running Diablo 3 on it saw temperatures on my computer shoot up to 90C! Well at the same when there’s a will, there’s a way, right? It seems that one particular MacBook Air owner decided to see if it would be possible to turn his computer into a gaming rig of sorts, and thanks to a bit of tinker and a somewhat complex setup, he managed to hook a high-end graphics card to the computer!
Of course this setup required him to run Windows on Boot Camp due to the graphic card driver requirements, but apart from that it seems that he managed to get the whole thing running. Due to the entire setup being plugged into the Thunderbolt port on his MacBook Air, it is pretty easy to remove which makes it ideal for taking with you on the go, not to mention the open setup should help cool down the GPU pretty well. In any case if you’d like to learn how he set it up and what his results were, head on over to the forums for the details, or check out the video above to see it in action.

How to Play Crysis on a MacBook Air
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe MacBook Air’s graphics capabilities make it too wimpy to play any proper games on out of the box—but there is a way to beef things up.
It’s a frankenstein monster of efforts, this computing rig appearing this afternoon, one that connects a MacBook Air to graphics it has no business running on its own – but certainly has the ability to roll with, it would seem. This amalgamation of bits and pieces starts with a Thunderbolt to Express Card adapter, moving on then to an ExpressCard to PCI-Express adapter, then connecting in the end to an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 graphics card. This beast then – after all that – brings what very much appears to be a high-end gaming experience to the Apple notebook.
The only caveat – other than an exposed set of fans, if you don’t wrap it all up – is the fact that you’ve got to use Apple’s Boot Camp to run Windows to make this all happen. Inside Boot Camp, Windows can bring the driver requirements needed to work with this high-powered graphics card, and the adapters seem to do the rest!
This setup is able to be plugged and unplugged with ease, making the MacBook Air an at-home beast of graphics delivery when you’re sitting down, a mobile computer as it’s marketed as when you’re not in the mood for gaming.
“You’ll get faster performance with an external monitor, but you’ll lose the convenience of not needing a giant monitor. This becomes relevant as people make better eGPU cases where your eGPU will be portable. Why bring a monitor to your friend’s place when your laptop already has one?” – Larry Gadea
Larry Gadea is the creator of this rig, and his original post to the Tech Inferno forums has more details on benchmarks and build options than you’ll ever care to sift through. Instead you’ll probably just want to kick this rig out yourself.
Meanwhile we’re reveling in the fact that someone saw things similar to Chris Davie’s column from earlier this year: Dear Apple, here’s what I want from the new Thunderbolt Display, complete with display-based GPU. Keep it powerful, and Apple – keep considering it!

The MacBook Air is an incredible laptop for many reasons
Whenever you go out to your favorite coffee haunt, or are simply chilling out at a bistro or bar that has free Wi-Fi connectivity, surely there are moments when you bring your work along with you. With the MacBook Air from Apple being one of the more popular notebooks to tote around simply because of its super slim design as well as lightweight form factor, it is not a good idea to leave your MacBook Air lying on the table where you are seated (especially if you are alone) while you head off to the washroom to relieve yourself. After all, you can never quite tell just when someone has cast a jealous eye on your MacBook Air and have been looking for an opportunity to relieve you of it when you are not around. Enter the MacBook Air Lock Bracket Kit from Maclocks.
The MacBook Air Lock Bracket Kit works as it says – it is a cutting-edge discreet bracket lock that offers MacBook Air users with an additional and unique method to secure your extremely slim MacBook Air. This is made possible thanks to an inconspicuous super-slim ultra-light solution which will not make your MacBook Air’s sleek design look out of place.
Made out of high-grade aerospace aluminum bracket, it has been specially designed with the patented “Wedge” security slot. The Wedge Security Cable (also touted to come along with the slimmest locking head in the world, and you are definitely free to dispute that claim) will feature a 360-degree rotational locking head which paves the way for a full range of motion, all the while holding the secured device firmly and in place. The super slim bracket measures a mere 1mm thin, and it tips the scales at under 0.1lb, now how about that? You can fasten it to the bottom of the MacBook Air easily using its own original four screw holes. The new MBA Lock Bracket Kit will arrive in 11″ and 13″ sizes, where placing a pre-order for either will cost you $69.95.
