Trascend Unveils JetDrive Lite MacBook Expansion Cards

Trascend Unveils JetDrive Lite MacBook Expansion CardsThe thing about upgrading storage on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air is that it can get pretty expensive, making you question whether or not you even needed that upgrade in the first place. Well if you do need additional storage but you’re unwilling to pay Apple that much money just to get additional space, you might be interested to learn that Transcend has recently introduced a new JetDrive Lite expansion card that has been designed for the MacBook Air and Pro in mind.

One of the perks of the JetDrive Lite is that it is a low-profile design, which means that unlike inserting memory cards into the MacBook’s SD card slot, it will not stick out, so you don’t have to worry about it getting knocked loose or damaged when you bring your laptop around with you.

According to Transcend, “When inserted into the card slot of a compatible MacBook Pro with Retina display or MacBook Air, the low-profile JetDrive Lite will not stick out like an SD card and can be left in place for on-the-go storage.”

It is also priced somewhat decently at $49 for the 64GB version and $99 for the 128GB version, although we should note that some models won’t be able to use the 128GB card. For example the 13-inch MacBook Air and the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro can use either the 64GB or 128GB models, while the 13-inch MacBook Pro will only be limited to the 64GB option.

The JetDrive Lites have a max sequential read speed of 95 MB/s, while the max write speed is at 60 MB/s, which we reckon should be sufficient for day to day use. Transcend’s JetDrive Lite expansion card is currently available for purchase, so if you’d like to learn more, it up their website for the details.

13 inch Non Retina MacBook Pro Could Be Discontinued This Year [Rumor]It wasn’t too long ago that Apple introduced Retina MacBook Pros into the mix. They were basically your typical MacBook Pro, but would sport a Retina display instead, thus offering customers with a pretty damn sharp laptop screen.

However these Retina versions of the MacBook Pro were a little more expensive than their non-Retina counterparts, and now according to a report from DigiTimes, it seems that in the future if you wanted a MacBook Pro, you’d have to go Retina or perhaps go for the MacBook Air or a different brand entirely. Apple Issues Fix For 13″ MacBook Pros’ Trackpad And Keyboard Woes

Apple Issues Fix For 13 MacBook Pros Trackpad And Keyboard WoesIt wasn’t too long ago that Apple’s recently announced 13” MacBook Pros with Retina display were hit with an issue that affected the device’s trackpad and keyboard. Apple has since announced that a fix would be on its way and sure enough it has. Apple has announced that a fix for the issue has been released today and the MacBook Pro Retina EFI Update V1.3 can be downloaded via the Mac App Store. According to Apple, this fix should address the issues mentioned above, so if you’re a MacBook Pro owner who is suffering from issues affecting your trackpad or keyboard, this fix is for you.

For those unfamiliar, the issues involved how the trackpad and keyboard would hang or suddenly become unresponsive, and the only way to “fix” the problem at that time would be to restart the laptop via a hard reset which is basically pressing and holding onto the laptop’s power button until it turns off. The issue was reported around the 28th of October so kudos to Apple for working relatively quickly to release an update that would address it. If you have already downloaded the update, let us know in the comments below if it works for you!

OS X Mavericks Taps MacBook Pro’s Ambient Light Sensor To Detect Movement

OS X Mavericks Taps MacBook Pros Ambient Light Sensor To Detect MovementWe’re not sure if MacBook Pro owners have noticed, but your laptops come with built-in ambient light sensors which has been used for the most part to dynamically adjust the brightness of its displays, as well as adjust the backlighting of the keyboard. Well now it seems that in the recently OS X Mavericks, Apple has tapped the ambient light sensor to do more than that and will now be able to detect when users are not around their computer, thus putting the computer to sleep, spinning down the hard drives, or turning off the display in a bid to save energy.

This is according to a discovery by a developer, Moshen Chen, who initially found the code in OS X Mavericks, but had thought that it had something to do with the iSight camera, but turned out to be the ambient light sensor in this case. This has since been confirmed by The Verge as well, who in their own report states that, “after covering the camera but not the light sensor, we were able to delay sleep mode by changing the ambient lighting conditions.” Sounds like a pretty nifty function and one designed for convenience that the regular user might not even notice. At this point in time it is unknown what other uses Apple has for the ambient light sensor, but third-party developers have taken advantage of the feature in the past. What sort of upcoming features would you like to see in the future that will make use of the built-in sensor?
