If The Zombie Apocalypse Comes, Stay Away from New Jersey

Have you ever wondered if the zombie scourge one day came ambling across your lawn, just how prepared you would be to face it? The geeks at Estately have ranked each state on how well they believe the states will survive a zombie apocalypse.

The list takes into account things like military personnel, access to weapons, fitness of residents, and target practice opportunities like paintball and laser tag. The result is a list of the states most likely to survive:

zombieland 2 620x802magnify

The state most likely to make it is Alaska. I can see that, there are a lot of woods to escape to and few people to turn into walkers and eat you. The state you least want to be in is New Jersey.

The numbers in the chart simply rank each state by the quality and availability of each of these dimensions. The lower the score, the better the ranking. The chart lists Texas in 26th spot and says we won’t survive. Clearly, they have never been here and seen all the military bases around the state, gun owners, and hunters that abound.

The complete map to Earth's deepest cave—7,208 feet deep, 8 miles long

At 2,197 meters (7,208 feet) the Krubera cave is the deepest on Earth. Located in the Arabika Massif, of the Western Caucasus in Abkhazia, Georgia, it extends for 13.432 kilometers (8,346 miles.) I would love to get inside, but I know the fear would paralyze me. I love to go through its complete (so far) map, though.

Google Project Tango Smartphone Lets You Make 3D Maps: DIY Street View

Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP) recently unveiled Project Tango, a smartphone that lets users make 3D models of their surroundings. ATAP is also working on development APIs that will let developers use those 3D models in apps.

The current Project Tango prototype is a 5″ phone with a 4 megapixel camera, a depth sensor, a motion tracking camera and two “computer vision processors.”

The sensors supposedly take about 250,000 measurements per second, which the phone processes into a 3D model in real time.

You’re not going to let the Google Street View crew into your house, but a harmless little smartphone? Come to my pocket and my life! The NSA wants a pendant-sized version of this thing yesterday.

New Maps Show Forests Disappearing in Real Time

The world is vast and travel budgets finite, so looking for deforestation as it’s happening all over the world is nigh impossible. That is, of course, unless you have an all seeing eye in the sky—and, hey, you know what, there are satellites orbiting over all of our heads right now. Global Forest Watch is a new, near real-time forest monitoring system from World Resources Institute, Google, and another 40-odd partner organizations.

Map of the Internet 1.0: Web Browser

Even if you’re not an XKCD fan, I’m sure some of you have seen Randall Munroe’s irreverent Map of Online Communities. Martin Vargic – who makes maps in his pastime – was inspired by that webcomic strip and decided to make his own map of the Internet.

The Independent spoke with Martin and found out that the amateur cartographer drew the map in Photoshop by hand, aping the style of old National Geographic maps. Like Randall, Martin isn’t actually planning on mapping the entire Internet or even the entire World Wide Web, just the most popular sites as determined by website analytics company Alexa. Martin also told The Independent that he split the websites into the western Old World and the eastern New World.

Aside from the map itself, Martin also added related stats and other trivia on the edges of his illustration.

Travel to deviantART’s shores to see a high-resolution version of the map. Martin admits that it’s far from the final version and will be updated and polished. But if you want, you can order a print of the map from Zazzle; the price will vary depending on the size of the print.
