Mario Kart 7 MicroDrive

Want to live life a little dangerously? You are able to do so by taking your chances whenever you are behind the wheel, but why do so in real life when you become a danger not only to yourself, but to people around you? You might as well get that done in a far more safer environment – that is, using a remote controlled toy, coupled with your imagination, of course. The $44.99 Mario Kart 7 MicroDrive would fit the bill perfectly, as you see tiny Mario gripping the wheel with both hands, ready to spring into action at any time!

The Mario Kart 7 MicroDrive is one cute little toy, where this particular racer might not have a trio of swirling red tortoise shells circling it at all times, but it is capable of performing a wheelie, something that Mario is unable to do in all Mario Kart series to date. Not only that, he intends to wow the skirts off the ladies by performing 360 degree spins, too! This R/C vehicle is capable of multiple speeds to boot, and will be powered by half a dozen of AAA batteries in total. Get two of these and you have a Mario vs Mario match.

I Wish I Could Have Ate a Bit of This 8-Bit Mario Cake

I always wondered how clean it was down in those pipes where Mario would duck into. I certainly wouldn’t want to jump into some green pipe sticking out of the sidewalk. While a real sewer pipe might not be so pleasant, this one is filled with nothing but tasty goodness.

8 bit mario cake

This delightful 8-bit Mario cake by I Am Ginger Pops features the pixelated likeness of the plumber peeping his head out of a green drain pipe, surrounded by some of the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. In all honesty, I don’t think gum paste and fondant taste all that good, but Toad looks so delicious, I want to pop him into my mouth and chomp him down this second. And forget about the cake on the inside of the pipe – it’s a dense vanilla fudge cake. Damn, that sounds so much better than lousy old 1up mushrooms.

Great job on the cake, Ginger Pops. Now how can I get one to put in my belly?

Visualized The lunacy of E3, live from Nintendo

Instead of its typical pre-show E3 press conference, Nintendo opted to open up its exhibition booth to journalists a bit early this year, teasing a few Wii U games, such as Pikmin 3 and the long-awaited Super Mario 3D World. Much to the amusement of attendees, Koichi Hayashida, the director of that latter title, joined journalists “dressed as a cat,” as you can see in the image above. There were meows and everything. Such is our reward for an unusually long wait for the abbreviated event to kick off.

Wii U Mario Kart 8 official: underwater, anti-gravity, Miiverse online

This week the folks at Nintendo have revealed the first Mario Kart game for the Wii U, bringing on a new collection of abilities for a new generation as well as pushing together a set of the best hits from past iterations. This game will be known as Mario Kart 8, and will be released

Nintendo Offers Smartphone App Porting Tool, But Should Be Porting Its Content To Phones Instead

AWKWARD-MARIO

Nintendo is trying to get people to buy the new Wii U, but it just isn’t working, according to recent sales numbers. Now, the Japanese gaming giant is hoping that helping developers port their smartphone content to the home gaming console with conversion software will help entice buyers, according to the Japan Times.

Smartphone apps on a home console isn’t a novel idea: Sony began encouraging devs to bring their mobile phone hits to the PlayStation network a while ago, and continues to add mobile-first titles to the ranks of the Vita’s portable library. But there’s nothing really indicating that’s making a major difference in terms of attracting customers. After all, why would people seek out those titles on consoles, portable or otherwise, when they’ve already got myriad devices to play them on natively, including the iPhone, Android smartphones and the iPad?

Nintendo looking for ports of smartphone titles is a quick and dirty way to build out a larger software library, and for developers, a way to at least explore a new delivery vector to reach customers they may not already be reaching. But it will probably be a limited audience, made more so by the fact that anyone who’s already a fan of the title on mobile would probably be disinclined to pay for it all over again.

Porting is also a strategy that hasn’t really seemed to have been successful for anyone so far. BlackBerry has encouraged developers to port their Android apps over to BB10 using its own super-simple tool, which by all accounts takes only a few minutes to do its magic. But even still, it’s finding it hard to get developers on board, and that’s going from one mobile platform to another. Incentivizing conversions for mobile devs to bring their titles to a home console will likely be tricker still.

It’s been brought up before, but it bears repeating: Nintendo would probably stand to gain a lot more by reversing the situation, and porting its own blockbuster titles to other platforms, the way that Sony has flirted with doing, and the way that other publishers like Square Enix and Capcom have fully embraced. Admittedly, neither of those are hardware makers like Nintendo, but arguably that makes things more imperative for the Mario creator, which is having a really rough go of its hardware efforts, with lots of money sunk into a brand new console just at the beginning of what has been a 10-year release cycle in the past.

I wouldn’t mind having something like Dots on my Wii U, if I had or cared about one, but it’s not going to convince me to go buy that console. On the other hand, I’d love Super Mario World on the iPhone (a legit version, not via emulator) and would pay dearly for the pleasure. You’ve got the funnel all wrong, Nintendo, and it isn’t going to bring the people back.

Real Life Mario Kart Drivers Spotted On Japan Freeway

Real Life Mario Kart Drivers Spotted On Japan Freeway

Over the years, we’ve seen people take their love for Mario Kart to the streets with even students at MIT joining in on the Mario Kart fun. But leave it to Japan to take something like a real-life Mario Kart and completely take it to the next level.

The two Mario Kart fans were spotted on the mean streets somewhere in Japan by a friend of Redditor justicefreedomlogic. Both “Mario” and “Luigi” were seen zipping down a freeway in Mario Kart-inspired vehicles that resembled the very karts both Mario and Luigi drive in their respective game series. Not only were their karts decked out in a Mario and Luigi paint scheme, but both drivers even dressed up as the iconic characters during their drive. (more…)

Mario Party, Yoshi’s Island sequel, and more heading to 3DS

Nintendo just announced, via a Nintendo Direct presentation, that a handful of new games that will be heading to the company’s 3DS handheld gaming console this year. Mario Party will be making its first appearance in the 3DS, Yoshi’s Island will be getting a sequel, Mario and Luigi will be teaming up again in Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, and Donkey Kong is coming back with Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D.

mario

Mario Party will be heading to the 3DS in the winter, which could mean late 2013 or early 2014. The game will include 81 new mini-games that will test your speed, concentration and luck, and the game will also take advantage of the 3DS’s various hardware features. Some of the mini-games use AR cards, amongst other unique things.

As for Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, the game will have you visiting an island for what was planned to be a relaxing vacation. However, Princess Peach is kidnapped (go figure) and is pulled into a fantasy dream world. The only way to make your way into the dream world is when Luigi sleeps on special pillows that have magical powers. Gamers will be able to start playing the game on August 11 in North America, July 12 in Europe, and July 18 in Japan.

The Yoshi’s Island sequel will feature some of the same art concepts and gameplay as featured in past installments, with Yoshi being tasked to protect Baby Mario by using deadly eggs on enemies, as well as ground stomps and other maneuvers that any Yoshi Island gamer will be familiar with. The official title of the game and its release date will be announced later in the future.

Donkey King Country Returns 3D will simply be a remake of the Wii game with the same name (only without the 3D). This time around, however, Nintendo added a new mode that features an adjusted game balance. This is because portable gamers tend to play in shorter sessions than home Wii console gamers, so the game is catered around that. Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will launch on May 24.

Mario & Luigi Dream Team Releasing On Nintendo 3DS August 11

Mario & Luigi Dream Team Releasing On Nintendo 3DS August 11

A new Mario & Luigi RPG game is headed to the Nintendo 3DS this year, which if you’ve ever experienced any of these games that were released on various Nintendo systems, you’ll know it has been a favorite series for both Nintendo and RPG fans alike. Mario & Luigi Dream Team is the name of the game and Nintendo announced this morning the game will be made available on the Nintendo 3DS on August 11.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata not only announced the game’s release date, but he also gave some information on the game’s story. Mario & Luigi Dream Team takes place on Pillow Island as Mario and friends are visiting for a tour. As you would expect, Princess Peach gets kidnapped once again and is taken into a dream world. The only way Mario and Luigi can help her is by entering the dream world which can only be accessed when Luigi sleeps on a magical pillow. When Luigi is asleep, you’ll be able to manipulate the game world by manipulating Luigi’s face in the lower portion of the 3DS.

LearnFun and PlayFun defeat video games with computer knowledge

The machines are just about to take over the planet now that computer scientist Tom Murphy has presented a paper on the possibility of video games being beaten by robots. It’s not quite that simple, but in essence, it’s time for Progress Quest to take hold. Presented at SigBovik 2013, what you’re about to see is a set of programs: LearnFun and PlayFun – the first watches you play the video game, the second takes the information and beats the video game much more efficiently than you can.

mariogo

What you’re seeing here is none other than Murphy himself taking a whopping 16+ minutes to not only explain the entire concept of both LearnFun and PlayFun, but a cool Mario Bros demonstration as well. Just the first level of Super Mario Bros, one of the most played video games of all time due to its in-box inclusion with the original Nintendo Entertainment System, is included for demonstration. You’ll see Murphy beat the first level, the machine learn from him, and the machine play.

This video shows how not just Mario Bros, but a wide variety of video games could technically be learned and beaten with the computer and by the computer. As the original NES system is just a miniature computer – ancient by today’s standards – it’s really only a matter of reading the button presses and pressing them at the right time. It’s not only limited to those one-possibility games either, this system could be expanded even to the randomly-generated worlds of today.

Now we’ve just got to amp up the power a bit and let this beast loose in the online worlds of WoW and whatnot. I know good and well I’ve sniped my own fair share of robots in Team Fortress 2 already. Bring on the Nintendo bots! PlayFun, you’re mine!
