McLaren Might Used Fighter Jet Windshields In Future Rides

McLaren Might Used Fighter Jet Windshields In Future RidesMcLaren, a name that is associated with supercars, might just introduce even more high tech stuff into their future rides. In fact, we have received word that they could very well introduce the very same kind of windshield technology that is installed on fighter jets onto their supercars down the road. After all, they were able to gain access to the kind of spotless windshields that adorn jet fighters, which will feature hypersonic shielding. We have no idea on how hypersonic shielding works exactly, but we do know that just about nothing, including water and insects that get in the way, will remain stuck onto the windshield, whether at high speeds or not.

There is speculation that McLaren’s wiper-less windshields might function through the installation of a hypersonic transducer that is located at the corner of the glass. In theory, at least, it will be able to vibrate just about anything off the windshield the moment it sense that something is there. McLaren has penciled plans to implement such technology into their entire range of rides by the time 2015 arrives, but for regular cars from the likes of Toyota, Honda and Ford, it does seem that we regular Joes will have to be more patient as usual.

McLaren Is Using Fighter Jet Technology for Wiper-free Windshields

McLaren Is Using Fighter Jet Technology for Wiper-free Windshields

Anyone who’s ever driven in a southern thunderstorm knows that windshield wipers suck. They smear water more than they remove it, and, my God, is that "whip-flick" sound annoying.

Formula E details Spark-Renault’s SRT_01E electric race car

Formula E reveals SparkRenault SRT_01E electric race car

If you plan to watch the inaugural Formula E season, you’ll want to get used to the race car shown above — you’ll see a lot of it. That’s the just-unveiled Spark-Renault SRT_01E, the official electric vehicle that all 10 Formula E teams will use next year. The car melds a Spark Racing Technology design with a McLaren-sourced, 270BHP equivalent motor based on that of the P1 supercar. Williams supplies the batteries, while Renault is responsible for tying all the systems together. As you’d imagine, this first-generation ride has its limitations; drivers will have to swap cars in the middle of an hour-long race, for example. Still, the FIA is quick to remind us that the SRT_01E won’t last beyond the 2014 season. Formula E is an open championship meant to advance EV technology, and manufacturers are likely to produce faster or more efficient cars in the future. %Gallery-slideshow83605%

McLaren P1: F1′s Hybrid Successor Will Blow Socks off Everywhere

It’s taken McLaren almost 15 years, but they’re about to finally release the F1′s successor, the P1. Like a few of the new supercars, it will feature a petrol engine mated with an electric motor to boost its power to even more. The maximum power output of the P1 is 903 HP!

The McLaren P1 is a hybrid supercar, with rear-wheel drive, and a mid-engine design which is combined with lots of carbon fiber to make it as light as possible. It comes with a 3.8 liter twin-turbocharged V8 tuned to 727hp. This engine is combined with a KERS electric motor producing an extra 176 horses. You can use it just with the petrol engine, with both, or just with the electric engine. Granted, you’ll only be able to drive 12 miles, but hey, it’s the thought that counts!

It was revealed that McLaren will produce just 375 P1s, each one costing $1.44 million (USD). In May 2013, McLaren announced that it had already sold 250 units, so you’d better hurry up if you want one. Production started in July, with the first cars to be delivered on August 22nd.

McLaren MP4-12C: The Street Legal Car with Formula 1 Tech

I have to admit that the McLaren F1 was a masterpiece in engineering, and it looked pretty awesome too. Though it took McLaren almost a decade before unveiling their production car that was wholly designed and built by the company.

The McLaren MP4-12C has a carbon fiber composite chassis and it is powered by a mid-mounted McLaren M838T 3.8L V8 engine, which has twin turbos. It produces 616HP and the car uses Formula 1-sourced tech to make it that much faster than other sports cars. It uses something called brake steer, which means that when the inside rear wheel is braked in fast corners, there’s a system to reduce understeer.

Like all supercars, the MP4-12C isn’t cheap. You’ll have to shell out at least $239,400(USD) to get yours.

Canada’s NFB releases McLaren’s Workshop for iPad, lets you create your own animated films

Canada's NFB releases McLaren's Workshop for iPad, lets you watch and create animated films

The National Film Board of Canada already has a few apps to its name, in addition to some other innovative internet-based efforts, and it’s now branched out even further with a full-fledged filmmaking app. Now available for the iPad, McLaren’s Workshop is a tribute of sorts to the work of animation pioneer Norman McLaren, known for the likes of Neighbours and Blinkity Blank. Not only does it let you watch 51 of McLaren’s short films and 11 documentaries about him, but it provides the tools necessary for you to create your own animated films using three of the techniques he’s known for (which you can then share on Vimeo). All that can be done for free, while two additional workshops available in the app will cost you $2.99 apiece. Head on past the break for a look at the app itself and some films created with it that were commissioned by the NFB.
