Brain Implant Could Help Folks Walk Again

Brain Implant Could Help Folks Walk AgainMedical technology has grown by leaps and bounds, so much so that a lady recently received a 3D printed skull implant. Well, implants are nice and good, so how else are they able to help humanity out? Take this unique brain implant for instance – researchers over at the A*Star Institute of Microelectronics in Singapore have managed to come up with a neural probe array that is so tiny, it will remain within one’s brain on a long-term basis without causing any damage to the surrounding delicate tissue.

Fluorescent Sensor Detects Presence Of Date Rape Drug

Fluorescent Sensor Detects Presence Of Date Rape Drug“Date rape” drugs have gained notoriety for being difficult to detect, so it pays dividends to be extra careful when you go out for some drinks with newfound friends. Who knows what are the kind of stuff that they put in your drink when you go to the toilet for a break? GHB, one of the most commonly-used of such drugs, happens to be colorless as well as odorless, making it extremely difficult to detect. Thanks to a team of researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS), they have come up with a fluorescent sensor which will change the color of your GHB-infused drink in half a minute when mixed.

Woman Gets 3D Printed Skull Implant

We’ve seen how 3D printing can be incredibly useful not just for making products or creating novelty items, but how it can also be used in the medical community. Back in 2013 we talked about how 3D printers have managed to 3D print skull implants and it seems that over in the Netherlands, one woman was the recipient of such an implant.

The operation took place about 3 months ago, but the Dutch News recently reported on how the operation was successful and how the woman has been going about her day perfectly fine with her 3D printed skull implant. The implant was printed by an Australian firm while the operation was conducted at the Utrecht University’s Medical Center in the Netherlands. (more…)

ATHENA The ‘Human Desktop’ Primed For Toxicity Tests

ATHENA The ‘Human Desktop’ Primed For Toxicity TestsI know that there are crash test dummies when it comes to testing out the safety of a production vehicle, but what happens when it comes to toxicity tests for humans? Certainly it would cross all boundaries to wilfully administer toxic stuff to an unknowing human test subject, so why not settle for a “human desktop” instead? This is what the ATHENA (Advanced Tissue-engineered Human Ectypal Network Analyzer) project is all about, where it is a smaller version of a human body that sits comfortably on a desk.

Sick? How About Snacking On Some Batteries?

Sick? How About Snacking On Some Batteries?I am quite sure that the regular battery is not on anyone’s list of foods, and it would most probably cause you an acute case of poisoning should you actually opt to eat a battery. However, when it comes to an entirely new range of in vivo electronics that claims to be able to offer healing from within, it is worth sitting up to take notice. Materials scientist John Rogers has come up with a biodegradable, ingestible battery that might just be able to deliver healing from within.

Twitter Could Help Track Flu Across NYC

Twitter Could Help Track Flu Across NYCTwitter has entered the spotlight over the weekend due to Turkey’s ban on the service recently, but this time around, here is some news on Twitter that might help lighten your mood. I am referring the Twitter being analyzed by a software to figure out just how far a particular “season” of influenza has spread within a locality. There is a special project from Johns Hopkins University that intends to make use of online tweets to track the spread of influenza.

iHear Is A Hearing Aid That Can Be Calibrated Over The Internet

If you or someone you know wears hearing aids, then you know that hearing aids aren’t a one size fits all solution. This is because hearing loss will differ from people to people, with some people suffering from a greater degree of hearing loss, while some suffer from slight hearing loss.

What this means is that hearing aids need to be calibrated to suit the wearer, and apparently this is where it gets expensive. There are cheap hearing aids with general presets, and customized ones which are prescribed and can go up to thousands of dollars for a pair, and the gap is something that Adnand Shennib is trying to address with iHear. An Insulin Pen Cap That Reminds Diabetics When Their Last Injection Was

As if all the side effects and health concerns related to diabetes weren’t enough, those dealing with the condition also have to maintain a frequent and carefully tracked regiment of insulin injections. Missing even one can be incredibly dangerous, which is what inspired one company to create the Timesulin.

Smart Tags Know If Food Or Medicine Is Not Fit For Consumption

Smart Tags Know If Food Or Medicine Is Not Fit For ConsumptionThere is a very good reason why there is a “use by” date on our food and drinks – simply because food can turn bad, and that would not be too good for your tummy then. However, we humans love to be more efficient in the way we do things, which is why it is interesting to see how much more passive things can get with this new color coded tag that was developed by researchers that can be placed on food and beverage containers in order to determine as to whether the products within are spoiled, or can still be consumed.

    Tiny Camera Captures Aorta Selfies

Tiny Camera Captures Aorta SelfiesThe ‘selfie’ has proven that it has enough relevance and pulling power to join the rest of the English vocabulary on a permanent residence basis, and so, without much further ado, we bring you word of a small camera that is capable of traveling through your body, capturing images at important places such as your aorta. This is made possible thanks to scientist F. Levent Degertekin who has developed such a tiny new camera that sends back high definition 3D images of your innards.
