Mercedes-Benz GLA concept sports laser video projector headlights

Mercedes-Benz likes to keep this high-tech and modern with their vehicles, so naturally it makes sense that the company’s latest concept — the GLA — has laser projection headlights capable of beaming videos. The CUV is set to make an appearance at the Shanghai Motor Show next week, but it seems the company wanted to tease it first before its official unveiling.

The laser projection headlights are something of amazement it seems, and thanks to some pretty nifty technology that’s built right into the headlights, drivers can project any image or video onto a screen. The images or video can come from a phone, tablet, flash drive, or even the internet using the GLA’s in-dash COMAND system.

However, Mercedes didn’t add projection to the GLA just for kicks and giggles — there is a logical purpose behind this, and the company says the projection system can be used as a real-time GPS navigation overlay.  It’s certainly something different then just looking at a small GPS screen during the whole trip.

The headlights feature a cooling system composed of a series of fans, so you won’t have to worry about the inevitable overheating of most projectors. Plus, there’s even a pair of HD video cameras mounted to the roof of the vehicle, and they’re detachable so you can take them with you when you’re not driving around. As for the engine specs, you’re looking at a turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder motor pushing out 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive.

Mercedes-Benz GLA concept puts laser projectors in headlights, redefines SUV

MercedesBenz GLA concept puts laser projectors in headlights, redefines the SUV as 'sporty'

All pretty young things eventually require face-lifts to stay fresh. And the same goes for car models too, which in the SUV’s case means a total body lift. Mercedes-Benz is planning to do just that to the category, with an official unveiling of its Concept GLA premium compact SUV planned for the Shanghai Auto Show next week. The sportier, “more coupe-like” vehicle has a 208-horsepower four-cylinder turbocharged gas engine, 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, 4Matic all wheel drive and — wait for it — headlamps with laser projectors. Oh yes, really. Despite what you may think, the laser light show isn’t all just for neat tricks, though you can display any photos or video compatible (shared via phone, hard drive or the wild interwebs) with the car’s in-dash COMAND system. No, there’s a practical purpose that prompted Mercedes-Benz’ German engineers to include the feature: a real-time navigation overlay. And lest we forget, there’s one last scintillating tidbit of this concept car’s posh perspective. It also features 65-feet of hand-stitched interior leather. We believe the correct response you’re searching for is: !#$&%. And we’d agree.

Garmin To Provide Navigation System For Future Mercedes Benz Cars

Garmin To Provide Navigation System For Future Mercedes Benz Cars

At the Consumer Electronics Show in January Garmin showed off the K2 platform. They vowed many with their latest infotainment platform, including Daimler AG. According to their latest press release, future Mercedes Benz cars will now feature in-dash GPS navigation provided by Garmin. Over the next four years Garmin’s system will be fully integrated in to Mercedes Benz cars, it begins with the 2014 models. Mercedes Benz is yet to reveal which features of the entire platform it will be integrated in its cars, we can expect news to trickle in once they announce launch models in 2014.

The system in future Mercedes Benz cars will display important driver information such as the next upcoming turn on a secondary display that will be placed behind the steering wheel. The in-dash display will show navigation and maps. The navigation functions will be controllable through the system’s rotary controller or through the voice command functionality. Garmin’s system will also provide critical positiong information for Advanced Driver Assistance or (ADAS), this funtionality of the car helps drivers in challenging situations. For the sake of clarity, the entire infotainment system is not Garmin, it’s the navigation and maps related features that are going to be provided by it.

Garmin to power future Mercedes-Benz infotainment systems

It looks like Garmin has managed to lock down a very solid deal following its automotive group’s compelling demo at CES. The company’s in-dash GPS software is now set to roll out with future Mercedes-Benz models — Garmin’s navigation system is scheduled to be fully integrated within the next four years, and will begin appearing with select 2014 models. The solution sounds similar to the version we saw on display during CES, and includes a primary panel in the center console, along with a secondary display located behind the steering wheel, tasked with providing key driver stats, along with next turn info, for example.

Mercedes will share more details once specific launch vehicles are announced, but Garmin said to expect features like Advanced Driver Assistance (ADAS), to help out with vehicle positioning, while the car manufacturer will bring tools like a rotary controller and voice commands to the table. What remains to be seen is how TomTom will fit into the mix — last month, the company announced plans of its own to provide HD Traffic service to certain Mercedes vehicles, though it’s unclear if the two GPS giants will be working together on this latest venture.

Update: Garmin reached out to clarify that the company will be providing the GPS software for Mercedes-Benz’s own infotainment solution. So it’s not all Garmin under the hood.

Mercedes-Benz to use Garmin navigation in future models

Garmin has announced today that Daimler AG has picked the company to be the navigation system partner for most future Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Garmin is one of the big front runners in the navigation system industry, and they even have mobile apps that iOS and Android users can take advantage of while on the road.

2014-cla-45-amg-580x386 copy

Garmin has been in the navigation business for a while, and they’ve been a go-to solution for GPS products. However, the next time you buy a new Mercedes-Benz, it could come with an infotainment system with Garmin navigation component built right in, although there’s no word on when exactly Mercedes-Benz will begin putting Garmin units in their new cars. However, it’s said that the car maker will be slowly ramping up Garmin integration over the next four years.

Garmin says that the built-in navigation for these new Mercedes-Benz models will not only display the usual navigation stuff, but drivers will also have access to other navigation information, like when your next turn is, which will show up on a second display positioned behind the steering wheel, so that drivers can easily glance at it.

The infotainment systems will come with navigation functions that can be controlled via voice while driving, creating a safe, hands-free environment. Plus, Garmin will include technology that will provide GPS information for Advanced Driver Assistance (ADAS), which can assist drivers in dangerous road conditions.

Taking the US-bound Smart Electric Drive for a spin (video)

We take the USbound Smart Electric Drive for a test drive video

The eponymous “Smart car” has been buzzing around city streets in the US for over five years now. It’s actually called the Fortwo, thanks to its limited seating capacity, and while it didn’t prove to be an immediate hit, sales have been steadily increasing. An electric version of the car has been available in limited numbers overseas for years now, but finally this year it’s coming to the US. And this is it. We got a chance to drive a green vinyl-wrapped Smart Electric Drive around some city streets ahead of the opening of the New York International Auto Show and came away reasonably impressed by this $25,000 EV — the cheapest on the market. Join us after the break for our impressions.

Mercedes-Benz introduces B-Class Electric Drive, we go eyes-on

MercedesBenz introduces BClass Electric Drive, we go eyeson

Electric Vehicle choices keep getting more compelling, and Mercedes-Benz is doing its part by unveiling the upcoming B-Class Electric Drive. The B-Class is among the smaller of MB’s cars (one step up from the A-Class), fitting squarely in the MPV category. It’s basically a mini-minivan. MPVs are small but big enough to be practical, and they tend to be economical. The fully electric powertrain in this 2014 model that just rolled onto the stage here at the New York International Auto Show should go a long way in that regard. Follow us after the break for more details and some photos.

Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will be unveiling five new vehicles at the New York International Auto Show. 2014-cla-45-amg

Mercedes plans to launch a new vehicle on average of once per quarter. The two vehicles making their world debuts at the New York show include the 2014 CLA45 AMG and the 2014 B-Class Electric Drive. We don’t have the full details on either of those vehicles yet, but the embargo on everything there is to know will expire today.

What we do know so far is that the CLA45 AMG will feature the most powerful four-cylinder engine in series production in the world producing 355 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque. The vehicle will have all wheel drive as well. The other world debut is the 2014 B-Class Electric Drive featuring a 134 hp electric motor and a driving range of 115 miles.

Making the US debut at the show will be the 2014 E63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC Wagon and the 2014 CLS63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC. The last of the vehicles making its US debut is the 2014 C63 AMG sedan and coupe. Mercedes says by the end of 2013 there will be 21 AMG models available in the United States. The smart fortwo BoConcept signature style car will also be debuting in the US for the first time.

Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6: When 4×4 Isn’t Enough

There are a plenty of places in the world that need 4×4s to get around. In some places, that’s just not enough. That’s probably why Mercedes-Benz came up with this 6×6 off-roader, which promises to be the most rugged Merc you’ve ever seen.

The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 was probably built for multi-millionaires and super-villains, with secret lairs far away from the beaten path. Or maybe Saudi oil princes, wanting to get around in the desert.

The 8300 pound G63 AMG 6×6 comes with six massive 37-inch wheels for more traction, a twin-turbocharged 5.5L AMG V8 that produces 536HP, a seven-speed automatic transmission and naturally, all-wheel drive, all resulting in a whopping 560-lb-ft of torque.

The interior is quite luxurious, featuring Alcantara and leather, sports seats, and everything you’d expect from a high-end Merc.

You’ll have to pay about $525,000(USD) to get yours, but act quickly, because they’re only making 20 to 30 of these each year.
