BBM for Android will look like this: beta tester gives you the tour (video)

BBM for Android Beta tester give you the tour video

BlackBerry Messenger’s trip to iOS and Android is taking longer than we hoped, but when walkthrough videos are starting to leak out, it’s a good sign that you’re on the final stretch. Courtesy of JT and BlackBerryOS, we’ve now got an early peek of what it’ll look like when the app eventually lands. Combining BBM’s rigorous chat app with our favorite Android keyboards sounds mighty tempting and it appears the app follows the bezel-swiping navigation of the BlackBerry 10 OS to get to your chat threads and groups. The video walkthrough (included after the break) also touches on the ability to transfer contacts through NFC, which is good sign that the messaging app will make the most of these the new mobile OSes.

Update: Within minutes of posting, the video’s gone private. At least we’ll have the memories, right? We’re back!

BlackBerry landing page prematurely declares ‘BBM for Android and iPhone is here’

BlackBerry landing page prematurely declares 'BBM for Android and iPhone is here'

BlackBerry’s messaging tool doesn’t appear to be live for Android and iOS just yet, but if this new landing page is any indication, the service is just about ready to launch. A new dedicated page with the banner “BBM for Android and iPhone is here,” appeared under the company’s Canadian domain this morning, along with an inactive link to download BBM for Android and another for iPhone. Further down the page are references to additional features that won’t be included at launch, such as BBM Voice, BBM Video and screen sharing features, which instead are expected this fall. The page has since been removed, but it may reappear any minute/hour/day now at the source link below.

Skype for Outlook.com

Americans waiting for the Skype for Outlook.com preview can stop twiddling their thumbs — the test release is now available in the US, complementing existing access in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany and the UK. As in other countries, stateside users with merged Outlook.com and Skype accounts just have to install a plugin for Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer to make calls while checking email. Those in other regions will have to sit tight, however; Microsoft only promises worldwide access to Skype for Outlook.com sometime in the “near future.”

Taio Cruz Builds Social Network, Reminds Us Of His Existence

Taio Cruz Builds Social Network, Reminds Us Of His Existence

It already feels like time for I Love The 10s. There’s plenty of throwback material. Example: Inception. Alternate example: Gangnam Style. And Taio Cruz would definitely make the cut for Break Your Heart and Dynamite. But he also apparently exists in the here and now. And he made a social network called KeWe (pronounced kiwi).

Windows 8.1 to ship with Skype pre-installed

Windows 81 to ship with Skype preinstalled

We already suspected that Windows and Skype were going to get particularly cozy after Microsoft phased out Messenger, but it’s now official: Windows 8.1 will ship with Skype pre-installed. Those who haven’t already downloaded the messaging client will get it when they upgrade their OS (or buy a Windows 8.1 PC) after October. The move won’t change much for existing Skype users, but it could easily lead to a jump in Skype adoption when the app will soon come bundled with the majority of PCs.

Flickr creator takes sign-ups for Slack, an office collaboration tool with universal search

Flickr creator takes signups for Slack, a collboartion tool with unified search

Collaboration tools are nothing new, but they don’t always make it easy to find what you’re looking for: conversations, files and other resources may sit in entirely different places. Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield wants to solve that through Slack, a service that just started taking sign-ups for its private preview. The collaboration app centers on a universal search interface that simplifies locating conversations and shared files, even if those files are hosted by a third-party provider like Google Drive. Both messages and notifications sync across dedicated apps for Android, iOS, OS X and Windows; Slack can also pull in content from outside tools like bug trackers, help desk clients or Twitter. The company is planning for a public launch in the fall, but those who just can’t wait can ask for a peek at the source link.

Skype update brings 720p video to Retina-display iOS devices

The latest Skype update has arrived in the iOS App Store and this one has a focus on video calling. Specifically, those sporting an iPhone 5 or fourth-generation iPad will now be able to make 720p HD quality video calls. While the 720p video is limited to the Retina-display devices, that is not where this […]

Skype update brings HD video calls to fourth-generation iPads (update: and the iPhone 5)

Skype update brings HD video calls on fourthgeneration iPads

One of the few big upgrades in the fourth-generation iPad was the HD front camera, but you wouldn’t know it you’ve been relying on Skype’s standard-definition video calls. Thankfully, a Skype for iPad 4.1 update has just enabled HD video calling for Apple’s latest-generation tablet. There isn’t much more to the release unless you’re craving better call stability, but there’s enough here to justify a visit to the App Store.

Update: A few hours later, Skype has an additional treat — it just released an iPhone app update that brings HD video calls to iPhone 5 owners.
