You Can Get a Free Year of Xbox Live Gold for Buying Office 360

Good news, Microsoft fans! For a limited time buying Microsoft products will get you more Microsoft products for free. To be more specific, you’ll get a yearlong subscription to Xbox Live Gold when you purchase the new(ish) Microsoft Office 365 which also happens to be a subscription based software suite. Advertised as a back-to-school deal, the offer is good from July 18 through September 28, and despite some initial concerns, it is available in the United States as well as 38 other countries.

Microsoft offering Xbox Live Gold to Office 365 subscribers, US gets stiffed

Microsoft is looking to appeal to the number crunchers who also might be gamers in their spare time. The company is bundling a whole year of Xbox Live Gold with their Office 365 service for free. Anyone that buys and activates an Office 365 Home Premium or Office 365 University annual subscription before September 28 will be able to get a free year of Xbox Live Gold.

That’s quite the deal if you ask us, but here’s the kicker: It’s not available in the US. Only 38 countries are eligible, including most of Europe and some South American countries, as well as Canada, but Microsoft seems to be leaving out one of its biggest markets in the world. It’s possible Microsoft is testing out the promo before bringing it to the States, but we wouldn’t be surprised if we never saw it.

Office 365 was launched back in 2011 to offer a cloud-based Office suite for businesses and educational institutions. Consumers can still buy Office on its own, just like it has always been, but Microsoft is pretty set on wanting to get more and more users taking advantage of Office 365, and a free year of Xbox Live Gold is pretty enticing.

We probably won’t see a huge rise in the number of new users for Office 365 based on this deal, but it does prove what Microsoft is willing to offer if you switch over to the new cloud-based word processing software. Xbox Live Gold costs $60 for one year, which is quite a bit after that adds up.

However, we could definitely see college students being the majority of adopters for this deal, considering that you get a free year of Xbox Live Gold, but we wouldn’t be surprised if there were a few businessmen and women who secretly enjoyed playing a game or two after work hours.

Microsoft Office Web Apps’ upcoming improvements to include Android support

Microsoft has published a roadmap of sorts for its Office Web Apps, detailing the enhancements and improvements it plans to roll out over the next year and what kind of features users can look forward to. Among them, perhaps most notably, is support for tablets running Android, which will be made possible via Chrome. Users can also plan to see real-time co-authoring and an improved user experience.

Office Web Apps already provides a co-authoring capability, but Microsoft plans to improve it sometime in the relatively near future with real-time capabilities. In essence, users who are working on the same project will no longer have to refresh to get updated changes made by other co-authors, instead seeing them happen in real-time. You can see this feature in the video below.

Those who use the web apps can see this particular feature with the PowerPoint Web App, with Microsoft saying that support and speed for the feature will increase “in the next few months.” The online user experience is also in the pipeline for updates, which are reported to include changes improving the ease of working with the service online.

Find and Replace is one specific feature that gets mentioned, as well as simplified file management and improved launch times. This is one area in particular, says Microsoft, where users have been pushing for some changes. And, finally, as we mentioned, Microsoft will be bringing support for editing on Android tablets at an unspecified date.

Analysts question Microsoft Office 365 adoption rate

Microsoft has recently announced that its Office 365 software is starting to be adapted at a higher rate. When it was reporting its 3rd quarter financial results, it stated that Office 365 net seat additions increased 5 times compared to the same quarter last year, and that 25% of its enterprise customers have switched over to the product. Analysts, however, have several questions regarding Microsoft’s data.

Analysts question Microsoft Office 365 adoption rate

Michael Silver, an analyst at Gartner, stated that Microsoft saying 25% of its enterprise customers have adopted Office 365 is a “big claim”. Things became a bit more peculiar when Peter Klein, Microsoft’s Chief Financial Officer, stated that Office 365 was starting to gain strong momentum in the market, but declined to release any information regarding the actual number of users who have purchased the product.

Silver stated that Microsoft needs to release more details because “one out of four customers haven’t moved to Office 365 to a large extent.” Silver also speculates that the numbers may be a bit exaggerated and that many of the users who were counted were probably only testing out the Office 365 trial period. T.J Keitt, an analyst at Forrester Research, also stated that due to Office 365 coming in so many varieties, including an e-mail only option, a bundled option, or a full-packed option, its hard to tell which packages customers were using and which ones were driving the highest numbers of sales for the product.

Keitt also mentions that Microsoft’s definition of enterprise customers varies greatly from Forrester’s definition. For Microsoft, an enterprise customer is a company with at least 250 employees, whereas with Forrester, an enterprise customer is a company with at least 1,000 employees. Because of Microsoft’s definition, Keitt believes that Microsoft was able to fluff up its numbers.

The analysts do not doubt Microsoft’s Office 365′s potential, but are just asking for more details regarding its data, such as what types of companies played the biggest role in the adoption of Office 365. Keitt states that he sees many businesses considering using Microsoft’s Office 365 product for their cloud-based communications. He also states that its becoming popular not only among businesses, but government agencies and schools as well.
