Xbox 360 users rejoice: Microsoft hasn’t abandoned you

While users of the recently past generation of gaming consoles could very well be (rightfully) worried about the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 taking away support from their precious Xbox 360 and PS3 units this season, Microsoft appears to be keeping scares at bay. What the company is doing instead is reassuring the public […]

Xbox 360 sales remain steady, is still best-selling console

The next-generation console war isn’t at full steam yet, but the summer has seen some fierce battling going on already between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. However, the Xbox 360 is still selling despite the anticipation of the next-generation. Microsoft revealed that they sold 140,000 Xbox 360 consoles during the month of June, which was enough to top the list of the best-selling consoles for 30 straight months.

The 30-month mark is quite impressive, and it means that the Xbox 360 has been the best-selling console for 2.5 years without Sony or Nintendo getting in the way. Even Nintendo’s launch of the Wii U wasn’t enough to dethrone Microsoft’s console, which goes to show that the Xbox 360 can outperform next-gen consoles, or the Wii U just had poor sales. Maybe a little of both?

As for the total amount spent on Xbox 360 hardware, games, and accessories during the month of June, Xbox 360 gamers spent a collective $197 million, which is the most of any console for that month. The Xbox 360 also held seven of the top 10 console games for June including Minecraft, NBA 2K13, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

It’s hard to believe that the Xbox 360 is almost eight years old, being introduced back in November of 2005. The Xbox One is also planned for a November release, as is the PlayStation 4. Xbox Live boss Larry Hyrb revealed yesterday that Xbox One pre-orders have surpassed pre-orders of the Xbox 360 during the same time period, which means that the new console may do better than the Xbox 360 did.

The Xbox One was unveiled back in May and was also further detailed at E3 last month. Microsoft will be at Gamescom in August to announce even more details on the new console before its release in November. The console has already received a bit of backlash, but Microsoft has since backtracked on plans for an always-on internet connection and heavy DRM restriction.

New Xbox 360 teardown cracks open the “offline gamers” console

During Microsoft’s E3 2013 press conference where they mostly focused on Xbox One games, the company also outed a new and redesigned Xbox 360 to hold gamers over until the Xbox One launch in November. Naturally, though, it was immediately bound for the iFixit teardown waitlist, and it’s finally on the surgery bed getting its

New Xbox 360: everything you need to know

Today, Microsoft announced a new, redesigned version of the Xbox 360. While the company’s E3 2013 press conference was mostly about the Xbox One, it seems they want to keep the Xbox 360 relevant for just a bit longer. After all, gamers still have until November before they’re able to pick up a fancy new

The main focus of the Microsoft event will be the Xbox One, however that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to see anything related to the Xbox 360. In fact, Micrsoft kicked off the E3 2013 event with word of a new design for the 360 as well as an upgrade to the existing Gold setup.

Xbox One sets sights on 400m sold, Xbox 360 aims for 100m

With the Xbox One releasing later this year, many may think that Microsoft will leave the Xbox 360 by the wayside, but it seems that’s on the contrary, as the company aims to sell 25 million units over the next five years, even with the console’s successor on the market. Microsoft plans to move a whopping 400 million units during its lifetime.

Microsoft’s senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business, Yusuf Mehdi, says that the company plans to continue to support the Xbox 360 into the foreseeable future, and the company even has a big announcement planned at E3 for the Xbox 360 that will “keep the console vibrant for years,” according to Microsoft.

Overall, Microsoft wants to sell over 100 million Xbox 360 consoles before they inevitably end up calling it quits on the eight-year-old machine. But the company has even more ambitious goals for the Xbox One. Mehdi says that “most industry experts think the next generation will get upwards of about 400 million units…over the next decade.”

Of course, these estimates come from analysts, but Mehdi and the rest of Microsoft believe that’s a realistic number to hit for their next-generation console. And because Microsoft will be marketing the Xbox One as an entertainment device and not just a gaming console, they think they can reach more people than with the Xbox 360. Thus resulting in more units sold.

In April, Microsoft reported that they sold 130,000 Xbox 360 consoles during that month, which is down by more than half from previous months, but if we take that number as the average and base it on future Xbox 360 sales, that comes out to only 7.8 million consoles sold over five years. Even if we double that to almost 16 million, that’s nowhere near the 25 million that Microsoft wants to achieve in five short years, and that’s even with the Xbox One not even out yet. So if Microsoft wants to reach 100 million Xbox 360 consoles sold, it’s going to have to work a miracle, to put it kindly.

Xbox 360 sales dropping drastically, still remains top-selling console

Microsoft may be prepping to unveil it’s next-generation Xbox next week, but the Xbox 360 is still going on strong. Keeping up with its staggering consistency, the Xbox 360 has remained at the top of the best-selling consoles list for the month of April in the US selling 130,000 units throughout the month and capturing a 42% market share during April.

However, 130,000 units is a far cry from March and February, when Microsoft sold 261,000 and 302,000 consoles, respectively. Total revenue brought in for the Xbox 360, including hardware, games, and accessories, adds up to $208 million, which is also more than any other gaming console for the month of April. However, its more than half of what Xbox 360 sales were a month previous, when March brought in $402 million.

During April, the Xbox 360 also held six out of the top 10 console games, which include NBA 2K13, Dead Island: Riptide, BioShock Infinite, Defiance, Injustice: Gods Among Us, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. NBA 2K13, BioShock Infinite, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II were also on the list during March.

The steep drop in sales could be a result of the impending announcement of the so-called Xbox 720, which Microsoft will unveil on May 21. However, the console most likely won’t actually release to the public until later this year in the fall, meaning that if sales are slipping already, it’s going to be a long summer for Microsoft and its Xbox 360.

As for the latest gaming console that has hit the public pipeline (the Wii U), sales aren’t doing so well either. The console has missed Nintendo’s expectations, and it seems many developers and publishers are beginning to rethink their strategy to makes games for the new console, including EA, who has said that they don’t have anything in the making for the Wii U, which could potentially hurt the console even more.
