It looks like 2014 is off to a series of hacks, with our report earlier claiming that Snapchat was hacked, compromising some 4.6 million user names and phone numbers in the process, and now it looks like Microsoft’s Skype Twitter and Facebook accounts have been hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army, who have in the past successfully hacked Twitter, The Financial Times, and The Washington Post just to name a few. The group took the opportunity to tweet out some anti-Microsoft sentiments, and advised the followers to stop using Microsoft’s services due to monitoring, which we can only assume has to be related to the recent bout of accusations leveled at the NSA.
According to the tweet, “Don’t use Microsoft emails(hotmail, outlook), they are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments. More details soon #SEA.” The tweets have since been deleted which we can only assume means that Microsoft has managed to regain control of their accounts. Thankfully unlike the Snapchat hack, this was only the hack of Microsoft’s Twitter and Facebook pages, meaning that as far as user information is concerned, it appears to be still intact. Microsoft has yet to respond to the hack.

Sony is known for its Android powered smartphones, and it released a number of devices in 2013 that received rave reviews. The company hasn’t said anything about its smartphone plans for 2014 but rumor has it that Sony might release a Windows Phone powered smartphone in 2014. The device is expected around mid-2014, no technical specifications have been leaked as yet.
This rumor comes from The Information which claims to have heard from a person that has knowledge of Sony’s plans. It also claims that in order to bring more manufacturers on board, Microsoft is reaching out to potential OEMs and even thinking of cutting licensing costs to sweeten the deal. Sony’s entrance in the Windows Phone market might serve the platform well as it looks to increase its global market share to close up to Android and iOS, the company has only made Android devices for quite some time now. With Nokia’s hardware business almost under its belt, Microsoft effectively bought the largest WP vendor, a deal that was rumored have caused concerns for other OEMs that currently manufacture WP devices. However the company clearly wants to keep working with other OEMs as well, China’s ZTE and India’s XOLO have already hopped onboard to develop their own WP smartphones which will also be released in 2014.

There’s no shortage of note taking applications, you can find apps from unknown startups to apps from companies like Microsoft. The company has released an updated OneNote app for Android which comes with a couple of new features. It says that this latest update is all about speed, enabling users to get more things done in less time. They have focused on making it faster to capture and access notes.
A share button for the app has been added browsers like Chrome and RSS readers through which users can instantly add “anything from anywhere” to OneNote. The app will store that content and even make it available across all of the users’ devices. Those who want to only capture what they see on the screen can simply send a screenshot to the app, it works with articles, webpages, images, videos and files. As previously mentioned, the app also supports multi-windows now, a feature that’s found on devices like the Galaxy S3. Users will be able to launch the OneNote app alongside another app and work on both at the same time. The update brings a new OneNote Recent Widget on the device’s home screen through which users will have quick and easy access to all of their recently accessed notes. The tiled interface of Windows Phone and Windows 8 was an interesting choice by Microsoft. It was definitely a departure from the typical rows and columns of icons we might normally associate with smartphone or desktop operating systems and was a fresh new look. Unfortunately early users of the interface found it confusing, at least compared to older versions of Windows, which has since prompted Microsoft to reintroduce the Start button in its Windows 8 update, but what about Windows Phone? Is Microsoft planning on revamping the operating system anytime soon? According to a patent filing, it seems that Microsoft might have something new planned, or have at the very least toyed with the idea.
The patent describes what appears to be a new user interface for Microsoft’s operating system in which it takes advantage of a 3D look. As you can see in the diagram before, it removes the need for pages in which users swipe through to access different apps and features, but instead makes use of a 3D block that spins around where the icons are located on each side. It’s an interesting concept and given that it is a patent, there’s really no telling if Microsoft has any plans to actually implement them, but what do you guys think? Is the Windows Phone interface starting to get a bit old and do you think it’s about time it has gotten a visual overhaul?

A few years ago when Nokia announced that they would adopt the Windows Phone platform, many were incredulous and mocked them. After all Android was the best choice for the Finnish company given the reach and market share Android had compared to Windows Phone, but we suppose it sort of worked out for Nokia in the end. Not only did they managed to do well enough for Microsoft to acquire them, but it seems that Nokia has managed to make themselves the de facto brand when it comes to Windows Phone handsets.
This is according to the latest figures from AdDuplex which was revealed that Nokia is still leading Windows Phone 8 sales and now accounts for more than 92% of the Windows Phone 8 install base. This is based on information gathered from over 5,000 applications that uses AdDuplex’s services, so while it might be comprehensive, it might not necessarily tell the whole story. AdDuplex goes on to confirm the dominance of a particular Windows Phone handset, which is of the Nokia Lumia 52x family where the Lumia 520 and Lumia 521 account for 43.5% of the Windows Phone 8 install base.
It will be sad to see the Nokia brand go as far as phones are concerned once Microsoft acquires them, but hopefully Microsoft will be able to pick up where Nokia left off and take them to new heights.
