Microsoft Photosynth adds super-high res graphics and new Spin scenes

Microsoft’s Photosynth 3D photo tool may not be the company’s best-known product, but it probably deserves to be, with new features today that add high-resolution graphics for immersive 60-megapixel scenes. The update, which Microsoft promises are as smooth as the footage you’d get from a Steadicam rig, uses intelligent processing of multiple frames of the […]

Microsoft Launches Socl App For Windows Phone 8 Devices

Microsoft Launches Socl App For Windows Phone 8 DevicesSlightly more than a couple of years ago, we did talk about Microsoft jumping aboard the social networking bandwagon with the announcement of Microsoft Socl. Well, that has more or less ended up as a failure, as it did not take off as intended. Still, the Microsoft Research team did roll out Socl in beta form, which is still alive, and they have now launched the Microsoft Socl app on the iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8 mobile operating systems. These mobile apps intend to spread the reach of Socl, where it will deliver a slew of features to those who are on the move, including the ability to create/share collages as well as “funny memes”, not to mention the whole point of it being a social network – which is, to network with various folks.

Here is a wee bit of history concerning Socl – this particular service happened to be known within Microsoft’s inner circles as Tulalip back in its early days, where Microsoft called it a product or service which would hopefully assist users to “find what you need and share what you know easier than ever.” Socl’s objective at this point in time is not meant to duke it out with the 800lbs gorilla such as Facebook, but intends to be complementary to the likes of Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest and Facebook.

Windows 8 Threshold Could Bring Back Full Start Menu Experience [Rumor]

Windows 8 Threshold Could Bring Back Full Start Menu Experience [Rumor]

When Microsoft first introduced Windows 8, it thought it could do away with the beloved “Start” button, which apparently they were wrong as Windows customers showed just how much they missed the button through feedback of the software. Windows 8.1 brought back the Start button, but it still doesn’t offer the traditional Windows Start button experience we’ve all become accustomed to. It looks like Windows 8.2 may finally give us the Start button we’ve all been wanting in Windows 8. (more…)

NPD: Xbox One Won First Round Of Sales Against PS4 In Australia

NPD: Xbox One Won First Round Of Sales Against PS4 In AustraliaBoth the Sony PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One seem to be tangled in a bitter fight with one another, and there will be different victors in various regions around the world. What I can say about the Xbox One is this, in Australia, it seemed to have emerge as the victor in the first sales round against the PS4. This particular bit of information was gleaned from the statistics department of retail sales research firm NPD Group, where they claimed that 65,917 units of the Xbox One console actually moved within its first three days in Australia, which is a whole lot less than the 1 million figure we saw Stateside. Still, the Australian Financial Review claims that this 60-plus thousand consoles sold happen to be a new record where console launches are concerned in that part of the world, doubling the amount of its previous record holder, the Nintendo Wii, which launched in 2006.

Sony has preferred to remain mum about the number of PS4 units sold in its first few days after release in Australia, and chances are it is less than the Xbox One. How much less, we do not know, but if it is more, we are quite sure that Sony would not miss out on this gilt edged chance to make such an announcement.

IGN: Xbox One Hard Drive Maxes Out At 362GBs

IGN: Xbox One Hard Drive Maxes Out At 362GBsThe Xbox One has certainly been quite a stellar performer when it comes to sales, although we have also been on the receiving end of some horror stories (which thankfully, ended on a good note) too. One thing about the Xbox One when it was launched in November Stateside – the console itself comes with a 500GB hard drive, but just how much free space is there actually for users to install their games and apps? Microsoft mentioned that storage management worked in an automatic manner, and shared, “By being smart about how storage is managed, Xbox One keeps everyone playing, watching, and sharing their entertainment content rather than worry about limitations.”

Obviously 500GB is not going to last forever, and it will eventually run out, and so the folks over at IGN have posted a video that depicts just 362GB thereabouts of available space on the 500GB hard drive that allows you to stash your games and videos among other media. The limit was apparently reached after performing installation on 20 out of 23 launch titles for the console, while the remainder of the hard drive was used for the operating system and default first party apps. At least you now have a better idea, no?
