Microsoft Launches Another Scroogled Campaign Against The Chromebook

Microsoft’s Scroogled campaign is fast gaining notoriety for poking fun at Google and their products, with the previous Scroogled campaign criticizing Google’s Chromebooks for essentially being worthless due to its inability to perform without an internet connection. Now Microsoft is back with another Scroogled video, and it looks like Microsoft is not done slamming the Chromebook just yet. Taking to Venice Beach, Ben the PC Guy went around the area asking passerby’s what they thought of the Chromebook, especially when it could not function without internet, and recording the reactions of the public in the process.

While it is true that Chromebook does rely on the internet for a lot of its functions, Google has recently introduced several offline features, such as for Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Docs just to name a few. For those who are looking to use Chromebooks as a productivity tool and might not necessarily have access to stable internet, those offline features should be more than enough to get the job done, but obviously for those who want the full experience, we suppose that’s the trade-off. Could it be that Microsoft sees Google and the Chromebook as a threat? Like we said if you’re after simple productivity, Chromebooks priced at $299 are hard to ignore.

BizSpark Provides a 3-Year MSDN Subscription for Small Businesses

This article was written on October 06, 2009 by CyberNet.

    msdn bizspark.jpg

A few weeks ago a lot of sites were writing about a web developer program from Microsoft that provided web-related software at no upfront cost. When you end your membership you will, however, have to pay a $100 fee. If you look at the overall value of the software you’ll see that it’s still worthwhile.

There’s another program that Microsoft offers which is an even better deal if you qualify… BizSpark. It’s targeted for small businesses that have been around for less than 3 years, make under $1 million a year, and are privately held. Once you get in you’ll have access to pretty much all the software Microsoft makes including all versions of Office 2007 (Ultimate, Professional, Enterprise, etc…), all versions of Windows 7 (Ultimate, Professional, Home Premium, etc…), all versions of Vista, and so on. You’ll basically get a full retail MSDN subscription.

Here’s a more detailed list of the requirements:

    • An eligible startup must have the following characteristics at the time of joining:
      • Actively engaged in development of a software-based product or service that will form a core piece of its current or intended business
      • Privately held
      • In business for less than 3 years
      • Less than US $1 million in annual revenue
    • To be eligible to use the software for production and deployment of hosted solutions, startups must also be developing a new “software-plus-services” solution (on any platform) to be delivered over the Internet. To meet this requirement your software must:
      • Add significant and primary functionality to the integrated Microsoft software
      • Be owned, not licensed, by you

After you apply it should take about one business day to get accepted (they’ll send a confirmation email to you). Once you’re in you’ll be able to enjoy 3-years of Microsoft software, and similar to the web developer program you’ll have to pay a $100 fee when you exit the program. That’s a heck of a deal for all of the software you get access to.

Bing Maps Preview For Windows 8.1 Released

Bing Maps Preview For Windows 8.1 Released

To preview the changes that Microsoft has planned for its mapping service, it released the Bing Maps Preview app for Windows 8.1 today. The company says that this app is a first step in “introducing a new way to explore the world.” The app has been built from the ground up, according to Microsoft, and that they have focused on detail, scale and clarity. To ensure that users are provided with the highest quality imagery possible, Microsoft is showcasing a focused list of more than 70 cities around the globe just to let users know what’s to come from Bing Maps in the future.

Since the app was built for Windows 8.1, it takes advantage of features like Snapview and Windows notification, it also has Live Tile support. Users can explore places of interest, routes and landmarks over the cityscape, they will also have the option to switch to Streetside viewing mode in selected areas. “Bubble view” will provide a preview of the Streetside view while maintaining a broad perspective of the entire map, so basically as the user rotates the map, their view turns with it. In-app search is also present, allowing users to search for a restaurant or a venue and immediately get a route overlay. Favorite routes can also be saved in the Bings Maps Preview app and if certain times are specified, the app will automatically display traffic notification along those routes at the provided time even if the app isn’t active. The app is available for download right now in Windows Store.

UK Teen Pays £450 For Xbox One Day One Edition On eBay, Receives Photo Instead

UK Teen Pays £450 For Xbox One Day One Edition On eBay, Receives Photo Instead

It goes without saying that one must be cautious when buying things online, particularly from websites such as Craigslist and eBay. It is very easy to get scammed, or worse, even killed. 19 year old Peter Clatworthy, based in Nottingham, UK, searched eBay for the Xbox One Day One edition that he wanted to purchase as a gift for his four year old son. Clatworthy had been saving up his pounds to purchase Microsoft’s latest gaming console, however he didn’t end up with the console he wanted so badly. After paying £450 or roughly $730 and expecting to receive the console, he ended up with a photo of the Xbox One.

The eBay listing clearly stated that the product was a photo of an Xbox One, however Clatworthy decided to go ahead with the purchase as the listing was in the video games and consoles category. He thought that since the listing was in this particular category, it just might be a legitimate Xbox One Day One edition console. Furthermore, he looked at the seller’s feedback and didn’t find any negative reviews, which gave him all the more reasons to continue with the purchase. He did, but when the package arrive, it was a lot smaller and flatter than he would have imagined. Inside, there was a badly printed picture of an Xbox One with the words “Thank you for your purchase” on the back. A spokesman for eBay tells the Nottingham post that they will take action against the seller as they “don’t allow listings which mislead.” Clatworthy is covered by eBay’s money back guarantee and since he paid via PayPal, he can expect a full refund. The seller has until Monday to refund the full payment.

Microsoft CEO Candidate Alan Mulally Likely To Remain At Ford Through 2014

Microsoft CEO Candidate Alan Mulally Likely To Remain At Ford Through 2014

Ever since outgoing Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced earlier this year that he is going to step down within a year, there has been a lot of speculation about who will get the top job at Redmond. The company has only ever had two CEOs, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. The new Microsoft CEO will have big shoes to fill and tough responsibilities to shoulder. Ford CEO Alan Mulally, known for his turnaround of the car maker, has been rumored to be on the company’s shortlist for the CEO job. However, according to Ford board member Edsel Ford II, who is actually the great-grandson of founder Henry Ford, Mulally will remain the car maker’s CEO “through 2014.”

If Mulally indeed plans on remaining at Ford throughout 2014, then he won’t be able to move to Redmond, which seeks to close the transition by mid-2014 at best. Ford II has reiterated his statement twice already, he tells Bloomberg TV that “Frankly, he has told us that his plan is to stay with Ford through the end of 2014.” While it was rumored at first that Mulally was not interested in joining Microsoft, recent reports suggest that he might have warmed up to the idea. It is rumored that Microsoft’s board wants a turnaround expert to lead the company, which is why Mulally is in the run. Other possible candidates include Stephen Elop, Tony Bates and Satya Nadella.
