We’ve seen several games, such as Team Fortress 2, Mirror’s Edge, and Skyrim modded to run on the Oculus Rift VR headset, and if you’re wondering what other games might be fun to play while wearing the Oculus Rift, it seems that some people have modded popular game, Minecraft, so that it can be played together with the Oculus Rift, essentially putting you into the game itself. We’re not sure what it would feel like since we don’t have the device for ourselves, but so far based on the video above put together by Vaecon, it seems to be pretty immersive, which we guess was kind of the point to begin with. For those who backed the Oculus Rift device and have it with them and you’re interested in trying this out for yourself, you can head on over to the MTBS3D forum where you will be able to download the necessary files to get the game up and running. For regular folks like ourselves, we guess the video above would have to suffice. So gamers, what other games would you like to see on the Oculus Rift?

If you’re looking for more virtual worlds to explore using the Oculus Rift, MTBS3D forum user StellaArtois has developed something that might strike your fancy: a Minecraft mod dubbed Minecrift that bakes in support for the virtual reality headset. The modification still needs refining, but it already incorporates head tracking and warping. Not only did the intrepid forum goer grapple with the OpenGL API to devise the solution, but they also created the altered software before their own Rift dev kit arrived, relying on others to provide feedback for tweaking.
Mojang has has expressed interest in the VR headset and already has one in house, but official support for the Rift doesn’t seem close at hand for Minecraft.”Would take a lot of work to get it working for Minecraft, but not impossible – especially with the new launcher,” Mojang dev Nathan Adams tweeted yesterday regarding the Rift. Click the first source link below to give the mod a shot or head past the break to see it in action.

Minecraft creator Markus Persson has just launched a new free game called Drop, which tests gamers’ typing skills as they type in the corresponding blinking letters that appear on the screen. However, typing in a wrong letter will speed up the game, and going too slow will result in the game being over, so be sure to hone in on your typing skills before getting in on this game.
The game runs on Unity, so you’ll need to download and install the Unity web player if you don’t already have it, but once you’re locked and loaded, the game will load and you’ll be ready to play right away. The game starts when you begin typing the letters that show up on the screen, and the letter that you need to type will blink and be highlighted.
Persson (a.k.a. “Notch”) quietly launched the new game this morning via Twitter, and he says that Drop was influenced by a factor of things, including Super Hexagon, the ending of Fez, and weirdly enough, his apartment ceiling, which we can clearly see in the game. Just like with Super Hexagon, Drop is an endless runner type of game, so the goal is to go as long as you can without losing.
If you’re wondering about Persson’s other game that he announced last year, Ox10c is still being developed and Persson still plans on releasing it, so if you’re excited about getting in on some first-person shooter action from the creator of Minecraft, you’ll still have that chance real soon.

Remember last week we reported on how a real life blacksmith actually forged the Keyblade from Kingdom Hearts? Well Man At Arm’s Tony Swatton is back and this time he has taken on another project and has forged the diamond sword from Minecraft (after being bombarded with multiple requests)! Considering that Swatton does not play any video games, we have to say that his creation is pretty faithful to the game, although in this case, Swatton has taken things up a notch and actually made the blade pretty dangerous in real life, as in it could actually hurt you because Swatton designed it that way. Anyway if you have a few minutes to spare, check out the video above to see how Swatton turned the Minecraft diamond sword into reality.

We’ve seen Minecraft players create some pretty impressive structures and worlds within the game itself, and it looks like YouTube group, WorldGoodSquad, are looking to make a game within a game by recreating Mario Kart 64 in the world of Minecraft. While it is a pretty impressive creation, it honestly does not look that fun, although we guess we’d probably have to play it ourselves to get a better idea. Its creators are also planning a tournament and if the response is good, they will be planning another tournament after that. It looks like a pretty faithful recreation, although based on what we can see in the trailer, what’s missing are the powerups and abilities that players can pick up during the race if this were really Mario Kart. In any case if you have got a minute or so to spare, check out the trailer in the video above to see the game in action!

We think it’s safe to say Minecraft has been a complete success on the Xbox 360 as the last time we heard of its sales, it reached 5 million copies sold. Hearing a retail version of the game was being planned was no complete surprise to us considering how well the game has done in its digital format. The retail version of Minecraft is still coming, just not at the end of April as it was originally announced.
The retail version of Minecraft for the Xbox 360 has been hit with a delay in the U.S. and is expected to be released on June 4. The news comes directly from Microsoft’s Larry Hyrb, who is better known as Major Nelson, in a recently published tweet saying the reason for the delay is “in order to include the very latest content.” (more…)

Markus “Notch” Persson, the creator of Minecraft, has claimed the #2 position in Time Magazine’s “2013 Time 100 Poll“. The ranking is based on how influential a person is, making Notch the 2nd most influential person in the world. He garnered 156,694 votes from Time Magazine voters, falling short about 16.5 thousand votes below Mohamed Morsi, the president of Egypt. Notch did, however, manage to beat out Kim Dotcom for 2nd place by nearly 40,000 votes.
In a different poll, 1st place nominee Mohamed Morsi received 220,907 votes from people who believe he isn’t the most influential person in the world, a number that greatly outweighs the 173,091 votes from people who think otherwise. In that same poll, only 18,694 people believe that Notch isn’t the most influential person in the world. Time Magazine will take these numbers into account when it comes out with its final list on April 18th.
A couple of months ago, Notch revealed in a Reddit post that he made $101 million last year from Minecraft. It was a huge shock to him. He grew up in a “relatively poor family” and got a decent job later on in life. He described his life as normal. Then “all of a sudden” he came into a bunch of money thanks to his hobbies of playing games and programming, which resulted in the creation of Minecraft. He gives fellow redditors his advice on how money should be used. He says,
“I think the right way to use money like this is to set a decent portion aside to make sure my family is comfortable, spend some on living out your dreams, and then try to put the rest towards making society a better place. For me, this includes charities that help children, and charities that help promote freedoms I think are vital in the coming dozen of years, such as the EFF.”
Even Kim Dotcom, who was voted as the 3rd most influential person in the world, believes that Notch should be the winner of the poll. Kim Dotcom took to Twitter to encourage his followers to vote for Notch because, “he gave us the amazing world of Minecraft and deserves to win.” Minecraft has become an extremely popular game, just reaching 10 million PC sales earlier this month. Microsoft plans on releasing an Xbox 360-specific version of the game on June 4th.
