Huawei no longer focused on the U.S. market

Huawei, who was once excited to be bringing more of its smartphones into the United States later this year, has decided to stop focusing its priorities on the U.S market, and instead will focus its efforts on bringing its products to the rest of the world. The company stated that its change in focus is due to “geopolitical reasons”. For quite a while now, Huawei has been under fire from the United States, Canada, and even the EU due to allegations that the Chinese government is using its smartphones to spy on other nations.

Huawei no longer focused on the United States market

Last October, both Huawei and ZTE were under fire from U.S. lawmakers, who claimed that the Chinese government was using these telecommunications companies as a way to spy on the United States. The lawmakers encouraged businesses in the U.S. to avoid purchasing products from these companies, which damaged both companies’ revenue streams. Huawei and ZTE both defended their positions, saying that all the allegations were false.

Several sources later stated that the White House found no evidence that Huawei’s equipment was being used as espionage tools by the Chinese government. But even so, lawmakers and government officials still believe that Huawei’s products are a threat. Canada, which planned on bringing Huawei’s smartphones into its government communications network, decided to ban the company’s products from being used. A provision was issued to prevent the U.S. government from purchasing Huawei and ZTE’s devices, and the EU has intentions of launching an investigation in both companies.

Huawei states that in the future, it may shift its focus back to the U.S. market, but for now, it’ll focus on other, emerging markets. Li Sanqi, Huawei’s Chief Technology Officer, stated that the company would love to get into the U.S market, which currently accounts for 30% of the entire world’s mobile carrier business, but for now, the company will “focus on the rest of the world, which is reasonably big enough and is growing significantly.”

Firefox OS developer phones sell out in matter of hours

Yesterday, Mozilla announced that a retailer by the name of Geeksphone would begin selling the first Firefox OS developer phones today, and true to its word, not only did Geeksphone put the phones up on sale, it managed to sell out its entire available supply within a matter of hours. Previously, Mozilla stated that it was going to sell and ship the phones in February, but it wasn’t able to keep its promise.

Geeksphone sold two different types of Firefox OS phones. The first phone was the Keon. The Keon is the orange-colored Firefox OS phone, and also the weaker one. It has a 3.5-inch HVGA screen, 1GHz Snapdragon S1 processor, 4GB internal storage with a MicroSD card slot for expandable storage, 512MB of RAM, and a 3MP rear-facing camera. The Keon has a price-point of $119 unlocked.

The Peak on the other hand is the white-colored Firefox OS phone, and also features some decent specs. The Peak has a 4.3-inch qHD IPS display, 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB internal storage with a MicroSD card slot for expandable storage, an 8MP rear-facing camera, and a 2MP front-facing camera. The Peak has a price-point of $195 unlocked.

According to Mozilla, the Keon’s specs will be similar to most of the Firefox OS handsets that are set to launch in 5 countries come June. The Peak on the other hand will be better for developers to test their apps on. Geeksphone says that while its supplies may be out of stock now, it should become available again by this Friday. Geeksphone hopes to be able to one day receive orders of up to 5,000 phones a day.

The Firefox OS handsets will eventually launch with 18 operators, with most of those operators being located in emerging markets. Eventually, in 2014, the phones will be heading to the United States, with AT&T speculated to be the first carrier to sell its phones. According to the CEO of Movile, the largest mobile services company in Brazil, phones like the FireFox OS smartphones will be the key in penetrating the smartphone market in Latin America.

Archos rolls out a trio of affordable Android smartphones

Archos must have taken the past few years to learn all that they can concerning the Android-powered platform, be they tablets or smartphones, and the French company has even rolled out their fair share of Android-powered tablets in the past, too. Well, this time around, they do intend to make a more incisive headway into the smartphone industry with the announcement of a spanking new smartphone range, with prices starting from as low as just $99 a pop.

Archos’ first line of Google certified smartphones will not compromise on quality, at least from what we see on paper, as each smartphone will feature a super slim design, an IPS screen with amazing viewing angles, a powerful Qualcomm CPU and the flexibility of dual SIM cards so that you are able to be more productive with a single device. The three smartphones in question would be the Archos 35 Carbon, Archos 50 Platinum and Archos 53 Platinum.

Share features and hardware specifications among all three of these new smartphones will include a pure un-skinned Android OS for those who like the stock Android experience, Google Certification for access to Google Play and Google Mobile Services such as Google Now, dual SIM capability, a full Black Screen process, the inclusion of Archos Media Centre Apps for music and videos, cloud-based contacts and storage, as well as two cameras – one in the front and the other behind.

These devices will range from 3.5” to 5.3” in size, where the Archos 50 Platinum is the flagship model among all three, sporting a stunning 5” full black IPS display paired with a quad-core 1.2GHz processor and an 8-megapixel shooter.

The Archos 35 Carbon, Archos 50 Platinum and Archos 53 Platinum will retail for $99.99, $219.99 and $249.99, respectively, where they will roll out in Europe from the end of next month onwards, and hopefully, the rest of the world too, will be able to get a taste of Archos’ hard work this time around.

Forget your Keys? Use Your Smartphone!

Sure, its happened to me more than once. I lost my house keys, left them in the wrong car, or forgot to give them to my mother who was stopping over to feed the dog. It’s a simple thing, and I should have just taken the time to have extra keys made, or hidden one under the doormat, but in this day and age I’m not sure anyone does that anymore.

Well, First Watch Security is bringing you a nifty home entry alternative, forget your keys and garage door openers, why not use your Smartphone? Working with a smartphone that employs Bluetooth 4.0 and utilizing a 128 bit encryption, The First Watch Security Smart Deadbolt or SecuRemote lets you access your doors or garage with your phone.

Okay, I guess I could like this. SecuRemote for your garage is available now, for only around 149 bucks, the Smart Deadbolt is making its way around the home show circuit and should be available soon. Samsung probe underway in Taiwan over allegations of smear campaign against HTC

Word surfaced on Monday that authorities in Taiwan have launched an investigation into technology firm Samsung. The allegation in the case is that Samsung hired students to post malicious comments about rival HTC online. A Taiwanese Fair Trade Commission spokesman has stated that the investigation began last week after complaints were filed.

According to the spokesperson, the probe will investigate whether Samsung engaged in false advertisement. If the investigation confirms that Samsung did engage in false advertising, Samsung and its marketing agency in Taiwan could be fined up to $835,000. Reports indicate that complaints about Samsung’s advertising practices first surfaced this month with Internet users claiming that Samsung had used its local advertising agent to hire students to write online articles besmirching HTC.

The students allegedly recommended Samsung devices instead of the HTC devices in the posts. Samsung Taiwan says that it has not yet been informed of the investigation by the Fair Trade Commission. However, reports indicate that the Samsung Taiwan Facebook page has posted that the company regrets “any inconvenience and confusion from the Internet event.”

The company Facebook page also says that all Internet marketing events, including posting articles on websites has been halted. Samsung Taiwan has a history of questionable advertisement and was fined Tw$300,000 last year for misleading advertisements about camera functions on its own Galaxy Y Duos GT-S6102 device.

T-Mobile’s first day iPhone sales exceeds all expectations

T-Mobile was more than pleasantly surprised when it discovered that in almost all of its 3,000 stores across the nation, people were lining up in order to purchase an iPhone. It was the only major carrier to not sell the iPhone. Even prepaid carriers like Virgin Mobile USA and Cricket got their hands on the iPhone before T-Mobile could. T-Mobile tried to play things off by saying it didn’t need an iPhone because it had a large selection of Android devices that were even better than the iPhone, but yesterday’s turnout proved otherwise.

T-Mobile first day iPhone 5 sales exceeds all expectations

Some stores were extremely busy and required stanchions, while other stores saw the commotion die down later on in the day. Many T-Mobile customers were relieved that they would finally be able to use an iPhone on their carrier. And while the customers would have to pay a lot more for their iPhone compared to other carriers, that didn’t deter them because in the end, the cost of the iPhone combined with T-Mobile’s low rates would ending up saving them a lot more in the long run.

Customers were able to get the 16GB T-Mobile iPhone 5 for a $99 down payment, and $20 monthly payments for 24 months. If they wanted an iPhone 4S instead, they would have to pay a $69.99 down payment, and $20 a month for 24 months. And finally, if they just wanted an iPhone 4, they would only have to make an $18 down payment, and pay $18 a month for 24 months. While the iPhone 4 and 4S is only available in one storage size, if customers wanted an iPhone 5 with more space, they would be able to purchase a 32GB version with a $199 down payment, or a 64GB with a $299 down payment (monthly payments stay the same).

T-Mobile also announced a trade-in program, where customers can trade in their old iPhones to reduce the payments of their new iPhone 5. While we’re not sure how many people took advantage of the trade-in program, we do know that T-Mobile has seen some phenomenal results from the launch of its iPhones. T-Mobile Chief Marketing Officer Mike Sievert told AllThingsD, “Clearly they want the iPhone 5, and they are voting with their feet that they want it from T-Mobile.” Be sure to check out our review on the iPhone 5 to see if its the device you should switch to.

Samsung Galaxy Win announced

Samsung is certainly a company that does not want to remain too specialized in their offerings to the masses. For example, they do want to do their level best to cater across a wide range of users when it comes to their smartphone range, which explains why they have entry level models, mid-range devices, and of course, flagship models that will send the world to a standstill whenever there is an impending announcement. Not only that, Samsung does deliver smartphones in all shapes and sizes, but it seems that they are placing more emphasis on the phablet segment this time around, with the announcement of the new Samsung Galaxy Win.

The Samsung Galaxy Win is said to be an intuitive new smartphone which was specially designed to balance the needs of the on-the-go user, where it is accompanied by massive processing power, the ability to perform multitasking, all crammed into a 4.7” design that would certainly leave some quarters wondering whether they should pick up the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 instead.

As for its hardware specifications, the Samsung Galaxy Win will run on a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, sport a 4.7” WVGA TFT display, with a 5-megapixel camera at the back alongside a VGA camera in front, where the rear camera boasts of capabilities like Continuous Shot, Best Photo, and multiple color effects that allows you to capture high-quality photos in a fun and easy manner. Not only that, it is accompanied by 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal memory, and just in case that is not enough, you can always further augment it by throwing in a microSD memory card to boot.

You will be able to choose from two colors when the Samsung Galaxy Win arrives in its respective markets, with Ceramic White and Titan Gray to pick, while a couple of variants are also at your disposal, where you will have to select between single SIM or dual SIM.

LG to expand its retail stores in emerging markets

LG is looking to expand its retail stores in overseas locations by up to 20% this year. It plans on opening up around 600 new retail locations in various emerging markets, including India, the Middle East, and Africa. It currently has 3,000 retail stores located all around the world. Its primary reason for doing so is to increases its smartphone market share, however, its retail locations will also be selling its other consumer electronics as well.

LG to expand its retail stores in emerging markets

LG hopes to increases its smartphone market share, and get more exposure to its smartphone line-up so that it can better compete with the likes of Apple, and its homeland rival, Samsung. LG sold over 10 million of its LTE handsets worldwide, however, it still doesn’t hold a candle to Samsung. LG plans on doubling its LTE-smartphone marketshare this year, and it plans on tripling its sales of LTE-handsets as well.

LG’s expansion of its retail stores is most likely a reaction to Samsung’s plan on launching 1,400 experience shops this year, with 900 of them launching next month. The experience shops will showcase Samsung’s mobile products, such as its smartphones, tablets, and laptops. They will be launching in Best Buys all over by summertime. These stores will mainly focus on pushing out the Samsung GALAXY S 4, which Samsung plans on selling 100 million of.

LG hasn’t stated how much this expansion is going to cost it, but the emerging markets are the best option for it to grab as much market share as possible. Smartphone shipments in an emerging market like India is expected to grow rapidly. Its anticipated to reach 155.6 million smartphones shipped in the year 2017 alone, which is a 459.7% increase compared to its 27.8 million smartphones shipped this year. Be sure to check out our review of the LG Optimus G, which LG will most likely be showcasing in its stores.
