FINsix Dart Laptop Charger Targets Bulky Power Bricks

Laptops get thinner and lighter every year, but their power adapters are mostly still big and heavy. FINsix claims its Dart laptop charger is up to four times smaller and up to six times lighter compared to ordinary chargers.

dart laptop charger by finsixmagnify

Dart uses what FINsix calls Very High Frequency technology to provide up to 65W of power. You can read more about it on FINsix’ technical report (pdf), though the word “technical” isn’t there for nothing. Note that 65W won’t be enough for all laptops – for example, Retina MacBook Pros use an 85W power adapter – but that will do for hundreds of other models. You can check this compatibility list (pdf) to see if your laptop will work with Dart. Dart also has a 2.1A USB charging port, so it can also replace your mobile device power adapter.

Plug a tiny browser to Kickstarter to support Dart. Pledge at least $89 (USD) to get a Dart that works with hundreds of Windows laptops. The MacBook-compatible Dart is at a higher reward tier – $148. FINsix says that they have to buy Apple’s power adapters to get parts for the Macbook-compatible Dart, hence the significant added cost for that model.

Alpine to Bring Apple CarPlay to the Aftermarket this Fall

Alpine has been making car stereos for the aftermarket for a number of years. The company has now announced that it will be bringing a new console unit to market later this fall that will allow you to add Apple CarPlay to your car. CarPlay will be offered as a factory option in some cars from major makers like Ford, GM, Honda, and others, so it’s good news that there will be an aftermarket option as well.

CarPlay lets iPhone users plug their smartphone into the car and then see content and controls on the car’s own screen. The idea is that it will be easier to see things like nav apps on the larger screen and drivers won’t need to take their eyes off the road, along with car-specific experiences for navigation, phone calls, messages, and music. The system also offers full Siri voice integration for voice control.

There is no word on what tech the Alpine CarPlay console will have. Presumably, it will feature more than just CarPlay integration with a normal radio and CD player, but that is unconfirmed. The Alpine unit is expected to cost $500 to $700 without installation.

Google Glass Privacy App Spots Security Cameras & Other Glass Users: Soliton Radar

Modern stealth action video games like the Metal Gear Solid series and the new Deus Ex often have a radar feature that lets you see enemies and cameras, among other things. New media artist Sander Veenhof made a similar app for Google Glass. He calls it Watch Your Privacy, and it uses open data to locate nearby surveillance cameras. That includes the mobile kind, i.e. other Glass users.

Watch Your Privacy uses a database of surveillance cameras called OSMcamera. Sander didn’t elaborate how his app spots other Glass users, just that it maps “the latitute/longitude coordinates of each Google Glass user.”

The app marks both cameras and users with a triangular warning sign along with a number, their distance from you and their coordinates. In addition, it marks the approximate coverage area of surveillance cameras. You can either have the area appear mark them as non-safe (red) or safe zones (green). If you want to stay hidden like Solid Snake, you’ll want to mark those areas red. If you feel more comfortable in a place with security cameras then you’ll mark their coverage areas green.

Glass users, crawl to your browser and head to Sander’s website to download his app.

Parrot AR.Drone Controlled with Head Movement Using Oculus Rift: OculusDrone

Last year we saw a drone camera system that streamed live 3D video that can be viewed through the Oculus Rift headset. Diego Araos wrote a program that not only lets you use the Rift to view the feed from a Parrot AR.Drone 2′s camera, it also uses control the drone through the headset.

PocketPrinter Robot: Reamba

Portable printers are nothing new, but they’re usually as wide as A4 sheets. Because obviously they have to accommodate paper right? ZUta Labs looked at the problem differently. The most important part of a printer is the part that prints, i.e. the print head. So they took that part out of a traditional printer and made it fit on your paper instead of the other way around.

pocket printer 620x410magnify

ZUta Labs’ PocketPrinter is a small robot that’s meant to go on top of the paper you want to print on.  It uses omnidirectional wheels to navigate on paper, a small ink cartridge and a battery that lasts up to one hour per charge. You can send a file to be printed from your desktop computer, but Zuta Labs is also working on mobile apps so that you can wirelessly queue files from your mobile devices.

There are significant tradeoffs to its size though. The PocketPrinter’s pace is a glacial 1.2 pages per minute. Also, the lone ink cartridge means you can only print in grayscale. ZUta Labs is planning to make a full color model in the future.

Command-P a browser window and pledge at least $180 (USD) on Kickstarter by May 10 to get a PocketPrinter as a reward.

FretPen: It’s a Pen. No, It’s a Tiny Guitar!

The FretPen is a pen that doubles as a miniature guitar. Even if you can’t do much with one string and teensy frets, at least you can write and play a neat little tune with it.

The FretPen is also smartphone-connected. A small D-pad on the pen allows you to switch strings on the fly, which gives you the ability to play scale-like runs and rudimentary melodies.

The video below will show you some of what this pen can do.

A Kickstarter campaign will be launching on the 22nd, so if you are interested you can give them your email address to be notified when they’re ready to accept your pledges.

The pen is mightier than the sword, plus now it can play tunes.

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 Teardown Reveals Ease of Repair

Samsung has launched its Gear 2 smartwatch that looks to be a pretty slick wearable if you happen to own a compatible Samsung smartphone. If you don’t own a compatible device, you are out of luck. The geeks over at iFixit are our go to source for seeing what gadgets look like on the inside, and they’ve just published their teardown of the Gear 2.

samsung gear 2 watch teardown 1 620x673magnify

The strap comes off the Gear 2 easily, which is to be expected since the straps are meant to be swapped as wanted. Taking off the case requires nothing more than removing four screws. Each of those screws has a gasket around them and the case has a gasket too to keep water out of the electronics.

Once inside, the iFixit guys identified the following major components:

  • Samsung KMF5X0005M (likely DRAM package with 1 GHz dual-core CPU layered beneath)
  • Maxim Integrated MAX77836 (likely micro-USB interface controller and Li+ battery charger)
  • STMicroelectronics 32F401B 32 bit ARM Cortex MCU
  • BCD Semiconductor Y831 audio codec
  • Samsung MP65M gyroscope

I’m impressed by how much hardware is inside that small case. One nice feature they found is that the battery is easily removable if it needs replaced.

The entire watch is well packaged and easy to fix, leading iFixit to give the device a very respectable repairability score of 8 out of 10.

Bungle Portable N64: Shiny Old Console

Bacman member Bungle made this polished, compact and portable Nintendo 64 mod. As far as portable N64 mods go, this is one of the cleanest ones I’ve ever seen. It’s not that pretty – it reminds me of the Sega Genesis controller – but it looks comfortable to hold, which was Bungle’s goal with this mod.

portable nintendo 64 by bungle 620x413magnify

The main reason why this handheld looks so clean is its case, which Bungle made through a process called vacuum forming. Bungle also made the buttons and the d-pad. The portable has a 3.5″ screen and internal batteries that provide up to 4 hours and 15 minutes of play time. You can skip to around 1:10 in Bungle’s demo video below to see him play a game on the portable.

Make a portable browser and head to Bungle’s thread on Bacman for more on the mod. You can also read his build log on Bacman. Bungle said he’s going to make more units of this mod to sell. If you’re interested, register on Bacman and send Bungle a private message.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes iDroid iPhone 5/5S Case: !

Last week, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima shared images of the iDroid case via Twitter. It makes the iPhone 5 and 5S look like the eponymous cutting edge walkie-talkie used by Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Snake must have been wearing cargo pants in the game, because this thing is huge. metal gear solid v ground zeroes idroid iphone 5 5s case 620x430magnify

Kojima also pointed out the features of the case on Twitter. It has a blue light in place of the in-game item’s holographic display and a fake antenna that’s actually a small stylus. The case also has buttons for the iPhone’s sleep and volume controls. The part of the case that covers the phone’s camera lens and flash can also be removed. As a final touch, Kojima encourages fans who will get the iDroid case to download the free MGS V: GZ app. metal gear solid v ground zeroes idroid iphone 5 5s case 2 620x914magnify

According to Metal Gear Informer, Sentinel will release the iDroid case in Japan this October for ¥7,500 (~$74 USD). I don’t know if it will be released internationally. If you’re more of an Attack on Titan fan, you’ll be glad to know that Sentinel also has a 3D Maneuver Gear hand grip iPhone case on its lineup. [via Hideo Kojima & Metal Gear Informer via Siliconera]
