Dock Card: The Flat-Pack iPhone Dock

I’ve seen what seems like a million-and-one iPhone docks over the years – some good, some bad, and some just plain weird, but most of them have one thing in common – they aren’t particularly portable. Stycom’s Dock Card doesn’t have this problem.

At just 2.1″(w) x 3.3″(d) x 0.2″(h), this compact dock can easily fold down and fit in your pocket. When opened up, it can work in either landscape or portrait mode, and has a pop-up 30-pin dock connector. That little red part is a short cable which can be connected to your iPhone’s wall charger or your computer’s USB port.

It’s even got a little drawer with enough room to store an SD card, a spare SIM and a SIM removal tool. Pretty nifty, eh?

They’re available in three colors: white with red accents, red with white accents, and black with silver accents.

So what’s not to like? Well I can only come up with one thing – there’s no 8-pin Lightning connector version (yet), so those of us with the iPhone 5 or the latest iPod Touch are out of luck for now. But if you happen to have an iPhone 3/3GS/4/4S or an earlier iPod Touch, head on over to Amazon, where you can buy the Stycom Dock Card for $29.99(USD).

Pinch Interface Links Mobile Device Screens Together: Hold on to that iPad 1

There are times when our mobile devices reduce our face-to-face interaction with people. A new mobile interface called ‘Pinch’ could change that. It lets multiple mobile devices link their screens together to form a larger display.

pinch mobile interface by tokyo university of technology

Pinch is being developed by a research group at the Tokyo University of Technology. It gets its name from the fact that users make the pinch gesture on the screen of two mobile devices in order to link them. Currently the devices need to be linked via Wi-Fi. The connection allows them to determine each other’s position and adjust their display and content fairly quickly. Watch the video below for more on Pinch:

Based on the demo, Pinch will only work if all mobile devices are playing or running the same media or app. So I don’t think people will want to use Pinch to make a larger display with their mobile devices – you’ll have to have the same copy of the video on all devices to do that. But I can imagine apps that can take advantage of this, such as board game apps, racing games or file sharing apps. And a Captain Planet app.

Gizmon Adds a Remote Camera Shutter to iOS Devices

If you’d like to snap pictures while standing away from your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, this nifty little device makes it easy to do so. Gizmon’s Remote Shutter simply plugs into your gadget’s headphone jack and provides you with a remote you can use from several feet away.

To keep things lighthearted, the remote is designed to look an old canister of film. While its retractable cord isn’t long enough to let you stand on the other side of the room, it’s perfect for letting your grab high-quality images when your device is on a tripod or mounting bracket, since you can snap pics without touching the screen and potentially shaking the camera – especially important in dark scenes. Another advantage of the corded design is that it’s compatible with all camera apps, whereas the Bluetooth remotes out there require software developers to modify their apps to be compatible.

The Gizmon Remote Shutter is fully compatible with the iPhone 3GS/4/4S/5 as well as the iPod Touch and iPad 2 or higher. You can grab one now over on Amazon for $23(USD).

USB Bracelet: Never Lose a Flash Drive Again

If there’s one thing that I’ve lost a lot of over the years, it’s USB flash drives. From people just taking them, to just losing them because of their diminutive size, USB drives need to be replaced at rapid rate. However, if you had a USB drive hidden in your bracelet, you’d probably be less likely to misplace it.

Mophie Unveils Juice Pack for Galaxy S III

It doesn’t matter what brand or model of smartphone you use; odds are the battery won’t last as long as you want it to. If you are using a smartphone on a 4G network, the battery may not last long at all. Mophie has been around for a long time making battery cases for smartphones to extend the run time of your device. The company’s latest offering is one of its Juice Pack smartphone cases for the Samsung Galaxy S III.

The battery inside the case is 2300 mAh and promises to roughly double the run time of your S III. Mophie claims that the phone will get an additional nine hours of talk time, eleven hours of Internet use, or an additional eight hours of video playback.

It also has a USB pass-through that allows the user to charge and sync the phone without removing it from the case. The battery inside the case can be turned off using a toggle switch, and it has LED indicators to show how much power remains. Those indicators can also show how much time is left when charging the case’s battery.

The case is available right now for $99.95(USD) in white with a black version coming later this month.

Ball-shaped Camera & Sensor: Real Life Battle Scanner

If you’ve ever played XCOM: Enemy Unknown, you’ll be familiar with the Battle Scanner, a gadget used by the game’s sniper class. The Battle Scanner provides visibility to an area covered by fog-of-war. A new company is currently working on a real world equivalent of that device. And not just because the Sniper won’t share his toy with the rest of us.

bounce imaging ball and sensor camera

The yet unnamed device is being developed by Bounce Imaging. The device will have six cameras that can take two pictures per second, which will then be stitched together to provide a 360º degree of its surroundings. It will also have infrared LEDs to help it take pictures in low light. The ball will send the 360º view to a mobile device so the user can scout and plan in safety. Aside from the cameras, the ball could also contain various sensors, such as ones that analyze temperature, chemicals or radiation.

As with the Battle Scanner, this concept device will be extremely useful in combat situations. But Francisco Aguilar, the founder of Bounce Imaging, was actually compelled to start his company after the earthquake in Haiti back in 2010, where his concept device could have helped find survivors. Aguilar says the device will be tested by SWAT teams and Massachusetts police in January 2013 and could have a retail price as low as just $500 (USD).

HiLo Lens for iPhone & iPad: Take Pictures from the Right Angle. Literally.

The swiveling displays on some modern cameras make it easier to shoot pictures from a variety of angles. iPhones and iPads don’t have swiveling displays (yet), but this attachable right angle lens can help even up the playing field.

The HiLo’s three lenses and prism help it do its job. So what can you do with a right angle lens? Watch the video below to find out:

Pledge at least $60 (USD) on Kickstarter to reserve a HiLo lens. What I want is a lens add-on that prevents people from shooting videos vertically.

iPad 4 Teardown from iFixit Exposes New Apple Tablet’s Juicy Insides

They gang over at iFixit has been very busy of late tearing apart new gadgets. Recently, they tore apart a new iPad mini and a Microsoft Surface tablet to see what’s on the inside. The latest device to get the teardown treatment is the newest iPad 4 that debuted with the iPad mini.

ip4 tear 1

As expected, the tablet has a dual-core A6X processor with a quad-core GPU. It uses a 9.7-inch LCD with a resolution of 2048 x 1536. It comes with 16 GB, 32 GB, or 64 GB of storage and has a five-megapixel rear camera. One major difference between the latest generation of the iPad in the iPad 3 from seven months ago is the smaller Lightning connector on the new tablet.

The teardown also confirms that LG is manufacturing the display for the latest generation iPad, at least in the one torn down here. Apple is known to use multiple display providers to meet demand. The battery is the same unit in the new iPad as it was in the previous version. Overall, iFixit says the new iPad 4 isn’t any more repairable than the previous model, receiving only 2 out of 10 score – with 10 being the easiest to repair.

JBL SoundFly: Packing Tunes in the Corner of Your Room

After having played around with a couple of wireless speakers, I have to admit that I like them. The wireless JBL SoundFly is somewhat diminutive, but it packs enough power to let you listen to your music in almost any room.

jbl soundfly air

The speaker plugs into a power outlet and it packs 20W of power. It’s Wi-Fi-enabled and AirPlay-compatible, but it can also link up with three other units in order to give you a full-on home audio experience. The SoundFly comes in two versions. The Air works with iOS devices, and the BT is a Bluetooth model. These speakers plug in directly into an outlet, which is good and bad since you don’t have to worry about battery power, but that limits portability.

The SoundFly Air is available right now and costs $199(USD), while the Bluetooth version will cost $179 when it’s available.

Use a Rubber Band As an iPhone Grip

It seems there’s always a better iPhone case around the corner… While I don’t think I have that many iPhone cases, I do have about 8 and unlike some people boast that their iPhones are naked, and without protection, I like to have my iPhone nicely protected, so that I can sell it when I eventually upgrade. That being said, using a rubber band as simple iPhone grip is definitely a cool idea.

If you like the naked iPhone look, but still want to get a better grip on yours, then check out what Instructables user timwikander came up with. You can basically use any thick rubber band and stretch it out around your iPhone, without sacrificing much in looks. While he reports that he was able to drill in a couple of holes to get access to the ports, I think it’s probably better just to remove it when you need access. That way, the rubber band remains tight and secure, no matter what.

If you can find some transparent, thick rubber bands, it might look really good too.
