Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5 Micro Four Third Camera Drops Into View

Panasonic just unveiled a new mid-level Micro Four Third camera, the Lumix G DMC-G5. It’s the successor to the popular G3 and packs some cool new features. These kinds of cameras take impressive photos, while being easier to lug around than a full-sized DSLR.

OnStar and RelayRides Team to Let Drivers Rent Their Cars to Complete Strangers

Would you loan your car to complete stranger? I wouldn’t loan my car to my own cousin, much less a random person off the street. However, if you’re the trusting sort driving a General Motors OnStar equipped vehicle, OnStar and RealyRides have teamed up to make it easy for you to rent your vehicle. RelayRides is a peer-to-peer car sharing market.

relayrides1

Drivers list their vehicle along with an hourly rate. The idea is that when the car owner doesn’t need the vehicle, they can rent it out to other people by the hour and make extra money. The interesting part of this tie up between OnStar and RelayRides is that the driver doesn’t have to meet the person renting the car to hand off keys, as OnStar can remotely lock and unlock the car.

Presumably, the renter would also be able to get OnStar to start the vehicle and turn it off remotely as well. The thing that bothers me about this is that I think it would be hard to get a renter to pay for any damage caused your vehicle or to prevent them from taking things out of your vehicle.

Drones for Peace: UAVs that Take Pictures, Not Lives

We hear more and more about military drones that spy or even conduct attacks, but a company called Rotary Robotics knows that Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or UAVs can be used for peaceful purposes too. The company is working on bringing affordable drones to the masses. So you can spy on your neighbors and attack them with water bombs.

drones for peace

Rotary Robotics calls their project Drones for Peace. The company has entered the MassChallenge program – a competition for startups and entrepreneurs – to boost the project’s progress. As for the drones themselves, they won’t be as high tech as the ones used by the military (nor should they be). The goal is to create $100 drones that are meant to take pictures from the air. To further reduce the costs, these drones won’t be controllable. Instead, users will tell the drone where or what to take a picture of via a smartphone app. Once the drone is launched, it determines its movements on its own, goes to the right spot, takes the picture and goes back. So scratch the water bomb attacks.

There are already alternatives for sale like the Parrot AR.Drone, but a $100 drone will be a game changer. Rotary Robotics hopes that their cheap drones will help enhance activism and citizen journalism, as well as help people do their jobs and of course have fun. Unfortunately, once they see this, thieves and perverts will also no doubt be eager to take their lows to new heights.

Case Cord iPhone Case for Gadget Fashionistas

Ever wanted to match your iPhone’s case with your wardrobe? I actually know a lot of people who do this, and this case takes the possible customization a bit further. At the end, it will match your clothes, but you most probably will have to sacrifice some of your old clothes to make it happen.

The Case Cord was created by the Korean designer Lee Ji Hoon and it uses spare fabric from your apparel as the backplate. You’ll need to cut out a portion of your clothes with the supplied template, then fit it into the designated casing. Having played around with old denim, I can imagine that might look cool.

For now, the case is just a concept/prototype, but I’m sure that there will be enough interest for this to be made into a real product at some point.

Gauntlet Keyboard: Your Hand is the Keyboard

A team of young engineers have invented a wearable keyboard. They’re calling it the G.A.U.N.T.L.E.T. – the Generally Accessible Universal Nomadic Tactile Low-power Electronic Typist. I can’t decide which is more awkward, the acronym or the G.A.U.N.T.L.E.T. itself.

gauntlet keyboard

The glove was conceptualized by Jiake Liu, who was inspired by sci-fi movies Children of Men and Minority Report. The glove pairs with devices via Bluetooth, which makes it convenient. What doesn’t make it convenient is the position of the letters, which are scattered all over the glove.

It appears that Liu and his peers invented G.A.U.N.T.L.E.T. as part of a school project, so even though the device itself isn’t that practical I am still thoroughly impressed. Liu imagines a future where the glove can be used to operate almost any device: “Need to microwave something? Touch the microwave oven with GAUNTLET (version 10), and through NFC (near field communication) you are paired with the oven, whose interface will pop up on your glasses, and you can use GAUNTLET to set the cook time.  Need to print something? Touch the printer, and now you can control the printer. Etc.” But if you need to type something? Stick with your phone’s keyboard.

Phocus iPhone Case Lets You Use Your DSLR Lenses, Taking iPhonetography to the Max

There are cases that allow you to use additional lenses for your iPhone, but the Phocus case goes one step beyond those. It will let you use your DSLR lenses, either Canon or Nikon, to get the best picture possible. However, your iPhone might no longer be as compact as you would have liked.

The Phocus iPhone case does a good job of using your existing lenses, especially if you’ve already got a DSLR. The case might be best suited for photographers trying to get the most out of their iPhone, and who want to mount their smartphone on a tripod. Watch out if you’ve got big telephoto lenses though, it could get quite bulky.

The Phocus case comes in two packages, one that sells for $99.95(USD) that comes with two extra lenses and one that sells for $134.95 that comes with three. You’ll have to spend extra to get the Canon or Nikon lens adapters, which sell for $220 and $245 respectively, so it can add up really quickly.

If you’re going to spend this much money and carry around giant lenses anyhow, it makes me wonder why you don’t just use your DSLR itself.

Nifty MiniDrive for MacBooks: Internal External Drive

As with most Apple offerings, the option to get increased storage space for new Mac notebooks are insanely expensive. Sure, external drives are cheap nowadays, but it would be more convenient if you didn’t have to carry another gadget around. That’s where the Nifty MiniDrive comes in.

The Nifty MiniDrive is simply a microSD card adapter that plugs into the SD card slot of MacBooks. Its main selling point is that it sits flush with the computer’s side when plugged in. You can just leave it there and make it part of your laptop.

A pledge of at least $30 (USD) on its Kickstarter fundraiser will make you one of the first owners of a Nifty MiniDrive. It’s available for the MacBook Air (note that the 11″ Air doesn’t have an SD slot), MacBook Pro and the MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

ego Hybrid Flash Drive iPhone Case Combines 2 Essential Things

iPhone cases and USB flash drives are probably some of the most popular tech around, and both things that you almost always have to have on you. That’s one of the reasons why ego decided to combine them into one sleek package. The ego Hybrid iPhone case looks pretty good, and you’ll be able to carry a USB flash drive without knowing it and without losing it.

ego hybrid usb iphone case

The ego Hybrid USB Series 2-in-1 iPhone case has a slide-out USB flash drive that’s available in 4, 8, or 16GB sizes. It’s incorporated into the case itself, which is made out of matte gray resin that’s matched with pastel drive colors. It’s not a bad look, and the fact of the matter is that I’ve lost quite a few USB drives over the years, so this will keep one securely in a known place.

The ego Hybrid iPhone case starts out at $34.95 for the 4GB and goes up to $49.95 for the 16GB version. The only improvement I can think off is it would be great if your iPhone could connect via Bluetooth to the flash drive to transfer files.

Procter & Gamble Promotes Mobile Shopping with Virtual QR Store

It’s no secret that companies who come up with the most creative ads are the ones that get the most attention, therefore, achieving their goal. Procter & Gamble decided to go the unusual route recently, and drummed up a lot of publicity when they launched their QR truck store on the road.

Procter Gamble Mobile TruckIt’s basically a regular old truck that invites people to buy some of P&G’s basic household stuff simply by pointing their smartphones at the QR codes beside the pictured goods. No details on how the P&G will deliver the items to the customer, although it’ll probably be shipped over to their home. While a fairly novel idea, we’ve seen something like this before with the virtual grocery store over in Korea.

The downside is that it’s probably not the greatest thing for the environment, with all the gas it’ll consume while making the rounds in the city.

P&G’s trucks were only deployed until June 27th as part of a promotional campaign. There’s no word on whether this is something they’ll be doing on a regular basis.

Syre Smartwatch Band Adds Bluetooth to iPod Nano

After Pebble’s resounding success, it was only a matter of time before more inventors would try and get smartwatches made through Kickstarter’s crowdfunding. The Syre is a watch band for your iPod Nano, with the distinct advantage of having Bluetooth neatly integrated.

The Syre smartwatch was developed by Anyé Spivey, in collaboration with ID-3D and Indesign. It’s made out of flexible silicone polymer, and the case integrates Bluetooth capability, which means that it will be compatible with wireless headphones and smartphones. It’s designed to fit the latest iPod Nano, which slides into the face of the strap.

It’s going to be available in six colors, depending on a vote by the project’s backers. To get your own, you’ll need to pledge $50 (USD). At the time of writing, the Kickstarter project had amassed more than $100,000 out its original goal of $75,000. It’s already fully funded and there are 21 days left to pledge. It’s expected to ship in November 2012.
